But you need the money first to pay for the new system.

I know, I know. Patience, earn the money before you buy, whatever. That is not the way most people work and it's not worth lamenting it or arguing about it. Having to keep both systems until the transfer is complete is not ideal.

I never understood the "Well if your DS breaks you're SOL" complaint..Send it into Nintendo for repair. Half the price of buying a new system if it's not under warranty.

Want to buy the new model? Do what I did when I moved from Aqua Blue to Flame Red: Buy the new system, transfer your data, then sell the old system.

It's obviously inconvenient and not ideal. Most everyone likes to subsidize their purchase of the new system by selling the old one.

But uh...that's still what you're doing. You're selling your old system to pay for the new one, you're just selling it after the fact.

This method is fine and well if you don't mind your "old" console dropping in price drastically. I sell my consoles when the market for them is still good. I maximize the value of the "old" in order to subsidize the cost of the new. No one will ever win this type of debate, it's just a matter of personal taste. If they are implementing account-tied purchases then the entire discussion is moot anyway.

On the topic of Animal Crossing, I'm hoping they find a way to let your console sleep properly this time. In Wild World, closing the DS turned the screens off but the game continue to tick the clock and generate events so your battery would die within a few hours. I'm sure a clever software engineer has found a way around this by now. Has there been any details around the 3DS version other than some trailers and slideshows?

If you don't have enough money to buy the system before selling the old one you have your priorities way out of whack and videogames should be the least of your concerns.

I can't remember which console release it was, but I remember retailers in the UK having some kind of thing where you could trade in a console to get the new one and then take it all home to do the data transfer before handing in the old console.

does the 3ds transfer still require that both systems be on-line? if not you could just ask them if they wouldn't mind letting you move some files after they accept your old system in trade. I did that before with my ds back when EB used to have their one year warranty

    Aww nutsack.

It's pretty much in their best interest to let you do that. I'm sure it could vary from store to store, but that's what I plan to do if ever there's a dual circle pad hardware update.

    So

I'm rather picky with my Mario games. Out of all the Mario platformers in the series' long and storied history, here are the ones I've liked:

    Super Mario Bros.
    Super Mario Bros. 2
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Land
    Super Mario World
The awesome brick-world segments from Super Mario Sunshine, but not the rest of the game
    New Super Mario Bros. Wii

The 3D games in particular, there's something to me that just feels wrong about them. Something about the depth of it never felt quite right to me. I have real trouble judging Mario's jumps in a 3D space, and running controls on the ground always felt really slippery and cumbersome. And it was only with this series in particular; I was fine with every other 3D platformer, but something about Mario just felt ridiculously off to me.

That being said, I obviously did not have high hopes for Super Mario 3D Land, but I bought it today and gave it a try, as I've done with every other Mario game.

    It. Is. Fucking. Awesome.

I have no trouble here with either the depth or the controls. Having a fixed camera is a fucking godsend, and the circle pad is a joyous control vessel sent down from the heavens. And I love the simple "block" aesthetic that I've seen so far, as it reminds me of both SMB3 and those wonderful Mario Sunshine endurance runs.

Also, I've gazed at the box and have seen no signs of Yoshi. Another wonderful, wonderful plus.

Yeah, try hitting the Home button in a multiplayer lobby or in a lot of online things. That's a good point though, they should anticipate even more play stoppage compared to the NDS with all the streetpass and other apps you regularly check while playing a 3DS game. They'll probably work something out.

Finally beat MGS3D. To my great relief, I shot every Yoshi on my first run through. My god, some of them are bitches. Later on you have like 3 seconds to shoot them in a 5x5 pixel area. Insane. Took so many retries.

I also found/ate one of every food in the game too, and got through with no alerts or killing anyone, plus a few other special conditions. Stamina killed all the bosses for their camo. Of course I did it on easy mode with a lot of help from the EZ Gun, but I just wanted to experience the game again and unlock everything.

    The seven rankings I got:
    Spoiler:

Next I'll be going for the Chicken rank, which is actually very difficult (time consuming) to get:

    Chicken - 50+ hours, 250+ kills, 250+ alerts, 60+ continues,100+ saves, 250+ serious injuries, 30+ life bars, 10+ life meds

But getting that will unlock 7 other titles too, various other states of poor performance (Giant Panda - play for 50+ hours etc.).

Overall it is still a pleasure to play through just as it used to be, and cool to be able to play a 3D PS2 game on a handheld.

Wow, actually got my first honest-to-god streetpass yesterday (outside of the 80-some I got at Blizzcon last year... that doesn't count since it's practically cheating :P).

Apparently they have an achievement for "First Streetpass in AGES" :)

I've never maxed out a 3D Mario (though a friend did give me a save file for Galaxy 1 so I could experience the Grand Finale whenever I want), and I doubt 3D Land will be the first.

The last thing I recall playing/cursing was a stage in the back half which had all these wires criss-crossed at irregular angles, which I kept missing the jumps to, or getting hit by stupid Fuzzies...

Is there any way to register your 3DS without activating it via Club Nintendo? I'm still trying to decide what to do about that since I already activated a system on my account but at the same time Nintendo needs to know I have the damn thing in case I ever need repair service.

Nevermind, looks like it's already registered.

agreed 100% maybe they'll do a different shade later? like with the ds lite, there was a nice shiny peach pink one, then down the road they made it a very different pink and changed the finish so it looked sparkly.

I'm still holding out for the orange one, or maybe a nice forest green or something.

Okay so this is a pretty cool occurrence.

Just woke up in the middle of the night, and remembered to drop my 3DS on the cradle to charge overnight. Upon doing this, I noticed the streetpass LED was glowing.
