Any chance of Cloud being in this vis a vi his appearance in Ehrgiez?

I'd say the chance of Cloud being in this is high. FF7 was one of the defining games of the PS1. More importantly, Square-Enix also owns the Tomb Raider franchise so if Sony cuts a deal with them, they could get Cloud & Lara Croft in the game.

You guys are just kinda illustrating the fact that the Playstation brand isn't strong enough to stand on its own, that it was built entirely on 3rd party development.

Given that I listed 30+ characters from Sony IPs that could make for great fighting game characters, I'd call that a radical interpretation of the text.

Jet Li from Rise to Honor ftw. I'm sure all his motion capture work is just sitting on a hard drive gathering virtual dust.

Yeah, and the guys you listed I either never heard of or kinda heard of, but care nothing about.

G&W was included because he was heavily historical. Ice-Climbers was an attempt to add a classic, nostalgic NES title to the roster (the other one considered? Balloon Fighter). All the characters included in Smash Bros. are either part of an iconic franchise or an extremely nostalgic bit of video game history.

When I was a teen, one big reason why I wanted Smash Bros. Melee was because it gave me the chance to play as Bowser in a fighting game. I liked Smash Bros. 64, but the biggest selling point was playing as Bowser. There's nothing from the list of initial characters that jumps out to me at all.

Arc from Arc the Lad? Really? All the recognition of balloon fighter with none of the nostalgic history.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

The bottom line is, just because you can list the characters doesn't mean they're iconic.

This is why I asked about the age gap thing. There's definitely a chance people growing up now consider the Sony characters as memorable, and they have little to no exposure of Nintendo characters. But I mean, that doesn't mean our memories of Nintendo characters go away. And considering Nintendo still puts the main cast of characters to use still, it's going to be a forever competition.

Arc the Lad 2 is widely considered one of the best Strategy/RPGs of all time. Admittedly, that's a niche sub-genre of games but it's far from Balloon Fighter.

And yes, Kratos, Nathan Drake, Parappa, Ratchet, and Sly Cooper aren't as famous as Mario, Link, Pikachu, Bowser, and Donkey Kong. So what? They're still famous enough that there will be people who would enjoy playing a fighting game starring them, assuming the game is decent. And if they also throw in some more obscure characters that just increases the possible audience. I mean, you wouldn't necessarily advertise them on the box, but you write up an article saying "Hey, we have Arc the Lad, Rose from Legend of Dragoon, Ari/Stan from Okage: Shadow King, and maybe a third party cameo like Cloud or Etna" and send it to the appropriate websites and now you've got a bunch of RPG fans interested in your fighting game.

For that matter, there will probably be some people who buy this game who don't care about the characters and just want to play a Smash Bros. style game on a Sony platform with (hopefully) good online.

And that's a good point Henroid. Sure, all of us old-timers who grow up on Atari and the 8-bit NES are well acquainted with the Nintendo pantheon. That doesn't mean that your average 13-year old these days is. To them, the Sony cast might be just as iconic or more so than the Nintendo one.

    Ico.

    That is all.

    No. Wait. That's not all.

    You want a roster? Here's a roster.

    Ico
    Chuji - Tobal No 1.
    Sofia - Battle Arena Toshinden
    Beat - Jet Grind Radio
    LocoRoco
    Abe - Ape Escape
    Ratchet & Clank - R&C series
Sly MotherEffin Cooper (his special attack would be to throw the turtle in the wheelchair at you)
Chocobo. Because when you can't choose what idiot haired hero or heroine to pick from a FF game, choose Chocobo. He'd be like the Pikachu from Smash Bros. Cheap, but effective. Just throw a ton of Gysahl Greens.
    Jak & Daxter
Ayane or Bass Armstrong - Dead or Alive
    Crash Bandicoot
    Tokobot
    Nathan Drake - Uncharted
    Nariko - Heavenly Sword
    Sockboy - LBP
Ai Fukami or Reiko Nagase - Ridge Racer
    A PS1 Memory Card
And as a hidden character, Ken Kutaragi's wang. Just his wang. Because it's that strong.

The problem of having Lara Croft in a game is the insurmountable odds of IP rights between the movie studios and what's left of Eidos.

The PC should have this, but for point and click adventure characters only.

Gabriel Knight vs. Sam and Max!
