Hilton used to have a deal where if you signed up for their free rewards (Hilton Honors) you'd get free wifi during your stay. It was active the last time I stayed a Hilton about a year ago (sorry don't travel much.) My wife has stayed at a hilton more recently than that and says it's still around (YMMV). But it's free, so just do it. And do it before hand so you have your info. (We never used the wired internet so I don't know if that's included.)

Cool, I just signed up. Looks like as long as I stay in one within a 12 month period, I don't loose any points or anything. And since PAX is once a year anyway, this may be something that I can keep going with. Thanks for the info!

Quick question if anyone knows. Last year we stayed at the Crowne Plaza, and the TV inputs were locked out by a device installed on the TV which could not be easily bypassed. This meant we couldn't use the XBox we had brought along.

Our group is staying at the Sheraton this year. Anyone know if they do anything to prevent game consoles and whatnot from being connected to their in-room televisions?

@DarkAon - Stayed at a Sheraton recently in Hawaii, and it had a physical guard that covered all but one Composite (not Component) input. Which sucks if you want anything in HD. Another I stayed at in Bellevue was pretty much the same, except their box thingy had the input right on it...which I guess is easier to access, but still SD only.

If you can somehow bypass that silly physical guard (screwdriver?) I'm assuming you can get at the HDMI inputs or component inputs. However, I'm not sure the remote given allows you to change the source directly either. It's basically a big pain in the ass.

Long story short, if you want to play the Xbox at all make sure you bring a composite (yellow only for video, red and white for audio) cable. Bring an HDMI and component too if you have space, in case you have better luck.

*shakes fist* Darn you for taking our spot!! Any who, we stayed at the Sheraton last year and it was very nice. We had no problems hooking up an Xbox for some late night gaming. :] That was last year though, maybe they changed it?

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not certain if we were planning on bringing a console or not this year, but its nice to know we probably won't be worthless if we do.

By the way, I should note the Grand Hyatt has no roll away beds (or so they told me last year) So if you booked a 2 person room, don't expect a roll away. (I suppose it's possible they have roll aways they just wouldn't put one in our room no matter how nicely I asked. Obviously if you booked accomadation for 3 or 4 they're bound to that.)
They had no problem printing me 3 keys, didn't bat an eye, but our friend has to sleep on the floor.

I had this issue at a smaller hotel. My buddy and I got stuck in a room with a single bed. So he asked for a "roll away" and the front desk said they didn't have any. I got on the phone to ask how they don't have cots and the guy was like, "OHHH a cot, yes we have those." ... I dunno. Language barrier?

Well, theoretically a cot is different from a roll-away bed... Shame on them for using the terms interchangeably.

Shame on them for knowing we needed something else to sleep on and not offering what they DID have when we ask for something they didn't. Lesson learned, always ask for both now.

No, I don't think there was a language barrier, I didn't exactly cut and paste my entire discussion but I'm reasonably certain we understood each other. I mean I guess it's entirely possible that they had cots or somesuch else, but this isn't small hotel chain, and the Customer Serivce for the rest of the weekend leads me to think if they had had them they would have suggested them (they were on top of everything else.)
I think the Hyatt has its rooms, and those are the rooms so to speak. We got a 2-person King room, for those rooms at least for that room they weren't going to put in another "sleeping device." (YMMV, if we had booked a 4-person 2 bed room who knows, I may have gotten a different answer but we got what we got.)

Edit: Google does claim Rollaways are available. So I'll adjust my original statement, I'm wondering if they were tying to tell me that our room wouldn't take a roll away (it was long and somewhat narrow). Of if they were just flat out of them from all the other PAXers (and I mistook "we're out" to mean "We don't have any, ever".) Both of these are still relevent however, as I'd not expect one.

Anyone have any experience with disability accommodations and the Sheraton? Specifically, I am diabetic and will need a fridge to store my insulin. Anyone know if they would be willing to let me keep it in the mini-bar or comp me a mini fridge? $30/night for 6 nights is just a ton of money.

the only way you can find out really is if you call the hotel it self and explain your situation.

For those who are wanting to switch hotels...

I just got off the phone with a John at OnPeak. He informs me that:
    - There isn't a wait list available for this event
    - The only way to switch reservations to a different hotel, if you already have one, is to cancel the current one then make the new reservation (Obviously this is dangerous when done via the web site).

His suggestion was to call them directly when attempting to switch hotels as it's easier for them to do it (and probably faster/safer as well).

IIRC (and my mind is shotty at best) someone who called the Sheraton last year was advised of a somewhat outlandish fee to "clean" said minfridge if stuff was stored in it. So I would call to double check this first. (I think I may have accidently set off a discussion of hotel fridges last year on account of my really really wanting a fridge in my room and trying to find the best hotel for that. I was too lazy to call around since I had a room at the Hyatt which I knew had a fridge option, anyway.)

Easy fix, While staying at the Sheraton you can opt for house keeping to NOT clean your room while you have a little door hanger they give (to supposedly stay green and do less laundry i guess?). No hose keeping = no fridge "cleaning" :]

    Hey guys,

Which is a better hotel generally? Roosevelt or Warwick? Similar prices but Roosevelt is closer but Warwick has an extra star...

I'd like to know anyone's thoughts on the Warwick as well. I booked it several months ago for a very reasonable rate and held onto it in case I couldn't get something at the Sheraton (surprise surprise) and it looks like it's going to be my group's hotel for this year's PAX Prime. Any information about the actual rooms? Outside of that all I know is it's got a pool, whirlpool, and an exercise room.

I stayed at the warwick last year and it's decent. The rooms were average size (we had a room with two queen beds) and were just rennovated last year although I'm not sure the whole hotel has been rennovated yet (we were on floor 14). I will say the rooms aren't sound proofed so you will get traffic noise (there is also an ambulance dispatch a few blocks down so you will be hearing sirens every so often but it usually dies down around 11 pm). The hotel itself is a bit on the older side so it isn't as fancy as some newer places but that didn't really bother me that much. There is also a restaurant in the lobby but I never went there so I can't tell you much about that but it looked like it had a decent sized bar if you're willing to pay hotel prices on booze. Also, this hotel still allows smoking on some floors so if you don't like smoke make sure you have a non-smoking floor. Since I wasn't on the ball this year I'll be staying at the warwick again. So if you have any questions just pm me and I'll tell you what I know.

Sorry if it's been asked but I am brand new to these forums. My friend and I are first time PAX goers so we are both super excited!

I put a hold on a room at Hotel Seattle for a week. Price wise it was decent at $105 for two beds and appears to be around 8 blocks away from the convention center. The reviews aren't that great but I don't need luxury since I haven't ever really stayed at anything beyond a Best Western and the like. Has anyone had any experience with this hotel and is the location decent to get to the convention center?

I have no experience with Seattle since I have only been there once 12 years ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Eh, I remember when it was posted I went "how are they going to enforce that." My guess is it's boiler plate what they tell people when they call because that way when someone shoves an unwrapped slice of Pizza in there at least you can say "we warned you."

Any old pros have cooler or ways to keep stuff in your room suggestions? Staying at the westin and don't want to pay for mini fridge stuff, but also don't want to go buy super expensive cooler I'll leave in the hotel Monday because i can't fly with it . was told one of dem Styrofoam ones, but not sure where I'd even buy one. I'm at this point getting ready to get my friend who lives up there to buy me one before he comes down to visit Thursday and then just giving it to him Monday if he can make it back down

Just FYI for anyone dragging their feet. As of right now there are only 2 hotels left with rooms for the Thurs-Monday timeframe (Ballpark: less than 60 rooms). On Friday night there are under 300 rooms left in total by my count (more hotels than Thursday.) So even if you only need a Friday & Saturday room (lucky you), you're still running out of time! (FWIW, somewhere upthread I noted 750 friday rooms left, less than a week ago IIRC. I may have made a math error in doing that (going back over my numbers) and there may have been more like 800 available then if you wanted to look at a trend.)

(A note on my methods, I chose Thurs-Monday since that's what I would think a person from out of town would need to attend PAX at the bare minimum (assuming a 3 day pass). I add up the Friday rooms because that's the "high limit," the day with the most rooms in the block, it also roughly equates to Saturday's availability w/in ~10 rooms difference. I do "2 guest" availabity for the Thurs-Monday check and then just add up all the rooms in the grid manually for the Friday check, so YMMV depending on the size room you want. These numbers are only to get a rough idea of what's going on.)

For everyone who is having a hard time affording the pricey hotels downtown / sharing a room with people that they don't know, there is a way to get a nice hotel for almost dirt cheap. If your not afraid to travel for 30 min each day, you can grab a hotel out by the airport, take the light-rail into town (it runs on 15 min intervals), and enjoy PAX with a lot more spending money then you had before. While traveling 30 min in / out of town and paying $5 a day for day passes could be defined as "suck", having an extra 300-500 bucks is totally worth it.

  • BigRedBigRed Seattle, WARegistered User regular
You should also mention the light rail stops running at just before midnight and PAX goes until 2am. You would have to cut your PAX day short to do this.

Huh, apparently I was cutting my PAX short last year due to exhaustion, must fix that this year. But yes, this is important to to point out. Especially since I think Concerts go past midnight. (I lost track of time last year, but my camera shows me still tacking PIXs at 10:30 and I'm fairly certain I reset it to Seattle Time).
It's worth pointing out that with the hotel room share thread (or some equivalent) you can get your cost down fairly low as well. $200/night assumes either a) You're subsidizing friends (like me!) or b) You're taking a room to yourself (that's cool if you want to do that, but it comes with extra costs.)

I've stayed at the Quality Inn by the airport before but I can't really speak about that location so much, but in general their hotels seem to offer some good stuff in terms of free breakfast, but not much in terms of low noise / internet. I have stayed at the Marriott that's out that same way and the only downside I really found to it was the walk was a bit worse (factoring in hills and stuff), but they at least had shuttle service to the convention.

I'm also thinking of switching my current reservation to the Mayflower Park Hotel from the Westin, anyone have any experience with them though? Overall the price difference and not paying extra for internet is a compelling offer.

the breakfast at my hotel is delicious, as for noise and internet...
not sure what it's like for other hotels in this chain, or other hotels in the area, but we usually have large tour groups coming in from asia, and they do tend to be very loud sometimes...

i also recently found out that we only have a 3mb connection, which when paired with the above(the younger tour groups have tons of ipads, laptops etc etc), makes for an AMAZING experience trying to get online :|

Our two biggest complaints about the place were that the elevators were very slow and the TV's in the rooms couldn't be used with game consoles (they use a device to lock it down).
