Even when the housing boom imploded people still need to fix and replace fixtures and with many companies laying off their own maintenance departments outside work is never hard to find.

Electrician is pretty safe as well but it can be hard to get into the union and some states are biches about that.

To tie this back into elections throwing a bunch of money at states to start CC programs based on these tradeskills would be a fucking great idea.

Ryan was 16 years old when he found his father in bed, dead from a heart attack at age 55. As a result, he received Social Security survivor's benefits until he turned 18. Both Ryan's grandfather and great-grandfather had also died from heart attacks, at ages 57 and 59 respectively.

    Huh. That's interesting.

We have a moral imperative to destroy our future!

    Seriously

The Ryan "Fuck the Poor" Budget and National Suicide. These are the messages that need to be hammered home about the GOP's econ policies.

Also the fact that while Obama is all about that "European Socialism" the only people trying to bring European economic policies to America are the Republicans.

I've been saying for years one of our biggest issues was that we want to force everyone through the collegiate meat grinder, when we need to take a much more pragmatic approach of trying to get people to take exits farther down that turnpike, like vocational school....but we've made those careers out to be "icky" and "degrading", because we live in a culture where one of the first questions you ask someone is "So...what do you do?", as if saying "I'm a plumber" somehow means they are below your social station, because you're a lawyer, or whatever.

Because 9% think it's too high, and shouldn't be cut! 9% of respondents could not fully
get their arms around the question. There should be another box you can check for, "I

So this is a really great Krugman interview, and this part is directly relevant to this thread:
A lot of the book is about how a certain class of economists have come to support somewhat unusual positions, like that the federal government can’t ever create jobs. If Mitt Romney is elected with the team we think he’ll have — guys like Greg Mankiw and Glenn Hubbard — will some of these economists become Keynesians again to move the needle on unemployment? Or will the positions taken in the last few years stick?

Mankiw and Hubbard have not actually abandoned their analytical positions as far as I can tell. They have left themselves an out. John Taylor, same thing. He’s got all kinds of arguments about why this particular stimulus didn’t do anything, but he’s still living in an essentially Keynesian world. But I don’t think they’re going to be calling the shots. I think if a president Romney tried to do stuff that’s more or less Keynesian, Paul Ryan would cut him off at the knees. And beyond that, I don’t think he’s got the conviction. Someone said his slogan should be “Vote Romney: He doesn’t mean any of it.” But his party means it

That's the problem with Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney with a democratic Congress wouldn't be awful.

Mitt Romney with the Congress he would more likely than not end up with would be a disaster, I'd argue probably worse than Bush II.

The plumbers I know make twice what the lawyers I know do.

Also tons and tons of people are enrolling in CCs with any job training associated. I know one nearby that has its enrollment filled for the next 3 and half years for a two year program!

It pisses me off that we aren't having a debate in the public sphere on what to do with education. It's not just that college isn't for everyone and we really should be encouraging people who enjoy or are okay with tradeskills to go that route. Our entire system is a big pile of shit, that needs some serious modernization and I fully blame the GOP for clinging onto the fucking idiotic idea that we're better off letting the states and incompetent local governments run the show on education.

In other news, Mitt's we should be creating 500k jobs may indeed come back to bite him in the ass. Fauxnews might be willing to give him a free pass on the statement but others are starting to call BS.

People who tell you Ryan has "unimpeachable academic credentials" are the same people who will poopoo all over Obama's degrees from Columbia and Harvard, and talk about how he's the "intellectual elite".

So basically, if you go down to your local community college, you are getting some edumication, but if you go to a top tier school and graduate with good grades, you're the "intellectual elite"...as if being intellectually elite is a bad trait.

Nonono. You go to Bible college for the real learning. (And not one of those secular humanist places like Baylor or Notre Dame either.)

And in a desperate attempt to avoid having to make a 2012 map (seriously! we need our fix, Nate!) 538 has an update to the jobs report:

    http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/04/has-obamas-magic-jobs-number-changed/?r=1
This analysis does suggest that Mr. Obama’s breakeven number on job creation is now slightly lower than when we had calculated it a few months ago — about 125,000 jobs per month rather than 150,000.

"Dr." Fischer, or How Mitt Romney Learned You Can't Make Religious Crazies Love You No Matter How Many Fags You Fire
Let me ask you this question, people have raised this question, if Mitt Romney can be pushed around, intimidated, coerced, coopted by a conservative radio talk show host in Middle America, then how is he going to stand up to the Chinese? How is he going to stand up to Putin? How is he going to stand up to North Korea if he can be pushed around by a yokel like me? I don’t think Romney is realizing the doubts that this begins to raise about his leadership. I don’t think for one minute that Mitt Romney did not want this guy gone; he wanted this guy gone because there was not one word of defense, not a peep, from the Romney camp to defend him. They just went absolutely stone cold silent, they put a bag over Grenell’s head, they even asked him to organize this phone conference and they didn’t even let him speak at the conference that he organized.
