PHOENIX - Federal authorities say they intend to file a lawsuit against Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio and his department over allegations of civil rights violations.
The U.S. Justice Department sent a letter dated Wednesday to lawyers for the Maricopa County sheriff, giving his office "notice of intent to file civil action."
Arpaio's office has been accused of racially profiling Latinos, basing immigration patrols on racially-charged citizen complaints that didn't allege crimes and punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking Spanish.
The DOJ also has accused Arpaio of having a culture of disregard for basic constitutional rights.
Arpaio has denied allegations of systematic discriminatory policing and has insisted the Justice Department provide facts to prove its allegations.
The Justice Department said a 22-page letter that it sent Arpaio's office in December provides those details.
What can you say but: go get him, DOJ. It's been a long time coming.

I enjoy how everyone's adopted Hedgie's scheme for naming all Sheriff Joe threads.
And about fucking time.
My cousin made this game: Gem Pop. It's legitimately fun, particularly for people who enjoy Bejewled, Dr. Mario, Tetris, etc. kinds of games. Only two bucks! If you try it out, PM me with what you think of it.
Or the administration decided to officially welcome Mitt Romney to the general election by kicking ass all over the place this week.

Hey uncivil Mormonphobic leftist aka progressive perv illegal immigrant lovers. How many of these sexual assaults were committed by illegal immigrants. Will the chant of racial profiling be spewed? When illegal immigrants are arested for sexual assault? I would speak out against uncivil Mormonphobic leftist aka progressive perv illegal immigrant lovers. But I do not want to be called closeted or latent uncivil Mormonphobic leftist aka progressive perv illegal immigrant lover. To quote lady gag gag. If you do not like it, then move to S.F. CA for milk and twinkies. Hey Dan! Want some white or chocolate milk with your twinkies? It will put lead in your pencil. Rumor has it. That on harvys headstone. A urinal is on the backside. Another rumor is the letters NAMBLA appear on top of the headstone.

Sheriff Joe should lead an investigation on the people investigating him. Expose the true corruption.
This is how a lot of roleplay in MMOs I play goes down. Or how Splinter Cell: Conviction ended up playing. "YOU GOT NEW GOGGLES TO SEE SHIT! OH NOW THEY HAVE THEM TOO!" Trump the trump card.

you joke, but this is exactly what he's done everytime he has been questioned/investigated
unfortunately, most of the time it's been a local politician in his little fiefdom and he was able to strong-arm them into silence.

Except he can't anymore - a key piece to that strategy was that he had a pet DA. He doesn't anymore.
After Thomas' disbarrment, it's not surprising how quickly things have deteriorated for Joe.

Oh hey, how long ago did this happen, and what caused it to happen?

About a month or two ago. It was the topic of the previous FSJ thread.

...I can't help but wonder if this action was prompted by the mass murder / suicide perpetrated by that white supremacist against his SO & her family.
It's not. This has been a long time in the making. Couple of months ago they basically cut off all negotiations with his office and publicly announced the reason for doing so being his not acting in good faith during the negotiations. He was yanking their chain from the get go. And as Hedgie pointed out, once he lost his powerful DA ally, he lost the only thing keeping his critics at bay.
Frankly they should be hauling him off to prison, it's a slap in the face to every family member who lost someone to his despicable jail practices.
This should have happened years ago, but at least it's happening now. I want Sheriff Joe in prison - I also want all of his credulous enablers thoroughly embarrassed.

Unfortunately, it's going to be a sort of political martyrdom. People hate the Federal government to the point of seeing it as a conspiring entity, rather than an entity that keeps people like Joe in check when they become position-abusing fucks.
Dark_Side is correct. The DOJ has been speaking softly for a long time on this, and Joe and his cronies refused to agree to any real reforms (plus, you know, shredding documents).
I doubt Joe cares. He'll quit his job and go on the wingnut welfare talking circuit.

I would love to see a 'speaking fees go towards victim restitution' clause or something like it tossed in there just because of that.

Ten bucks Fox News gives him a job.
They doubling up anyone's time slot these days? Anybody's ratings slipping? I'll up that to a hundred if they've got somebody they can cut back a half hour.

Personally, I want him in his prison, where the inmates get the bare minimum to survive in what can be best described as tents in a furnace. Oh, did I forget to mention that you're stripped searched before you're arraigned and don't even have basic human rights in there?
Yeah, I want him to go through the shithole he's created. fitting punishment as far as I'm concerned.

Once again for the millionth time. He runs the jail, not the prison. Most of the people in his little hotbed of hell are either going to be there for less than a year (so minor offences) or are still awaiting trial. Either way he wouldn't be in his tent city because he's got money, and people with money don't rot with the poor in good ole maricopa.
There was an article that came up a day or two ago where several of his posse made a book saying "Yeah, Sheriff Joe is awful", to which he replied "am not, THEY are awful".
The lawsuit recounts how a Latina woman who was five-months pregnant and a U.S. citizen was stopped as she pulled into the driveway. "After she exited her car, the officer then insisted that she sit on the hood of the car. When she refused, the officer grabbed her arms, puled them behind her back, and slammed her, stomach first, into the vehicle three times. He then dragged her to the patrol car and shoved her into the backseat," reads the complaint.
She was cited for failure to provide identification, which was later changed to failure to provide proof of insurance. The issue was resolved when the woman proved she had insurance to a court.
The suit claims on multiple occasions that people were arrested for merely applauding against the office's immigration policies. The judge presiding over the case of the arrestees found that the deputy who made the arrest "believes it is his role to make uncomfortable anyone who express[es] views that disagree with the sheriff" and that he had "trampled" over the First Amendment. The court acquitted them.
so he makes people that have not even been proven guilty live in a tent in the desert while they await trial? sounds like a stand up guy
Poorly supervised as well, multiple people have died from or been permenantally injured because of exposed rebar and other hazards. Outside of cases where his deputies decide they just want to kill someone and beat people to death while in custody.

I'll take a small victory, though.
I am amused by the naming convention sticking.
Also woot! it's about damn time!
You have to fight through some bad days, to earn the best days of your life.
No, wait. It's to try and take attention away from the truth about his birth certificate.
Ok, fine, it's because Joe is a jackass.
So much this

He used the sheriff's office and his position as a prosecutor to harass political enemies. He's now disbarred now.

If he ended up in the same prison as the people he used to frame.
