[D&D 4E] Dragon Slayers: Death from above [IC Thread]

aV1ri.jpg

Amidst the misty peaks of the Flinkorst mountains, high above the kingdom of Arcauen, the Dragonhalls have begun to stir once more with the beat of scaly wings. Carved from the stone by legions of slaves, the towering monument to the great dragon Nihilox has stood empty since the Archmage Dicorace slew the wyrm-father and his kin.

Now that winged shadows have come to darken the land once more, the king has grown desperate, promising a single wish to whomever slays the beasts. Mercenaries and sellswords from across the kingdom have flocked to the Dragonhalls with dreams of glory and wealth.

None have yet returned, but one ragtag band of heroes hopes to change that.

After a gruelling trek through the foothills and mountains of Flinkorst, our heroes finally catch sight of the fabled Dragonhalls. Twisting spires jut from the frost-laced stone, eerily silent but for the howling wind. Pressing on toward the gaping maw of the entrance, the eladrin's keen ears note a strange sound. He advises caution.

With weapons drawn, the group enters. Though light still fills the pillared hall, revealing the intricate carvings of Nihilox's many conquests, none pay them heed. All eyes are on the white dragon that pounds on the doors of the Dragonhalls, roaring in rage.

"OPEN THESE DOORS YOU SNIVELING WHELPS, THESE ARE MY MOUNTAINS! I'LL EAT YOUR HEARTS YOU-"

The beast freezes as it turns it's good eye on the slayers, it's scarred face twisting into a snarl. With a final pillar-shaking thump against the doors, it turns to face the intruders.

"I am Bitterstrike, Queen of Flinkorst! Bow to me and your death will be quick!"

A low rumble accompanies her words, punctuated by a section of pillar slamming into the ground.

"You see what I mean?" Alénthian says to his fellow slayers. "These beasts lack ANY form of refinement, or appreciation for the finer things in life."

The slim, well-dressed Eladrin tosses his head derisively, and strides across the shaking floor, seemingly undeterred by the masonry falling around him. As he walks, he breathes a word near-silently, and a huge, ornate spear of some fey metal appears in his hands. He then crouches by a pillar, supremely confident that the arrogant, culture-deprived icelizard across the hall from him has no idea where he could possibly have gone. He takes a moment to straighten his cloak across his shoulders, so that it falls in just the right way. Jauntily. Elves.

Kothargix sneers at the white dragon. The brute was too stupid to realize that it did not stand a chance against such a gathering of heroes. (Ha! Kothargix, a hero!). Let it roar and bluster all it wanted. Soon it would be dead, and Kothargix would dance a jig on its corpse.

Pointing his dagger at the beast, the little Kobold invokes a mighty spell...only for it to fizzle. Cursing, he slides into position in the shadow of the big robot and casts another spell, one which shifts the blue tinge to his scales to white confering a resistance to the breath weapons of his enemy. Big Iron also soaks up some of this defense.

Evanche's mouth twitches in an almost imperceptible smile as she notes the cold pouring off the wurm in front of her. The inferior race was sent to kill me, how cute, she thinks to herself as she lowers her staff and closes her eyes while her body begins to rise a few inches above the floor. The horns on her head lengthen and curl as thick black scales spread across the exterior of her body. A wreathe of flame flares up and dances across her form which remains unharmed and almost strengthened in the shield of fire.

Her feet touch the ground a moment later and Evanche strides forward confidently, charred impressions in the stone appearing with each step she takes. She ends her stride beside Amon'Kul and Estir, looking with her infernal countenance upon the dragon who quakes ever so slightly in response to her demonic form. Her mouth, still twisted in that earlier snarl then opens but no sound emerges...except to the ears of Bitterstrike who is inundated by maddening whispers of defeat and despair, urging failure and doom upon the draconic being. These whispers sear into the very brain of the dragon, steam venting from its ears as its insides begin to cook lending further distraction to its next potential strikes.

"Your crimes come home to spell your doom, dragon," she shouts with a voice that reverberates off the very stone, modulated by her new form to sound both impressive and screeching at once, "You may as well lay down and wait for the end to come."

Thanks Little brother, now it's time to move forward. Big Iron rush forward while under the cover of the rubble and end up standing next to the eladrin and tiefling.
HELP IS ON THE WAAAY, HELP IS ON THE WAAAAAAAAAY. Singing a war song created by his brothers eons ago. Although he sings with the voice like a bear, it somehow sounds quite comforting.
As soon as he arrives at his position, Big Iron aim and shoot without hesitation. Bolt flies right through dragon's thick scales while at the same time a surge of magic power rush into both of his brothers' weapons and body.

The blow strikes, and an explosion of light erupts from the elven blade. The pure radiance knocks Bitterstrike senseless, causing the beast to be propelled away from the elven warrior, falling to its side on the way until it comes to rest in a pile of rubble.

The rubble around Evanche's feet shift as she tests her footing, a low growl escaping her transformed lips as she finds no purchase. Pushing on regardless she begins to draw in the air with her armoured claws, scouring fire into the very essence of magic that pervades the area. Prepared for the dragon's inevitable counterattack in a myriad of ways, she proceeds by summoning a Sigil of Fire directly above the head of Bitterstrike. It rests there as if Damocles, a moment away from erupting with fury.

That done she then opens her mouth in a hellish scream, the sound reverberating around the arena and shaking the already unstable pillars further. This scream is returned, however, by a figure that swoops down from above to land opposite her on the other side of the dragon. The new arrival is a man, standing tall and bearing jet black wings as if angel's wings were they white. In each hand is held a curved blade dripping with blood and the being itself simply stares ahead with eyes dripping of hatred and fury.

Saved from falling unconscious by the timely intervention of Amon'Kul, if a tad bit sudden and forceful, Evanche returns her focus to that annoying Dragon. Her rage flares as fire licks across her demonic form in preparation for a counterstrike, even as black ichor oozes out of several wounds. These flames coalesce into a wave of fire that bursts over Amon'Kul's head to slam into the side of the dragon, searing off plates of frozen scales and charring much of the remainder of the creature's flesh.

To the dragon, all that it can hear is chiding rage, the sound of a whisper but with the volume of a torrent of screams in its ears. It chastens him with his arrogance, with the failure of its race, of the baseness of acting like a simple beast when it could have lived a more promising life. Instead, the whispers utter, it is destined for nothing but endless fire.

As the flames subside, Evanche raises an arm to her demonbound. At once, the blade-wielding ally flies forward, frost still clinging to its form but with the dragon close enough that it does not matter. Dragons Slain: 1

As the white dragon gurgles her last breath the adventures realise the rumbling has ceased, as if mirroring Bitterstrike's final peace. The only sound is the wind and the clatter of a few errant bricks. The solemnity of the moment is lost quickly as the slayers celebrate their victory and go about reaping the spoils of the battle.

As every dragon hunter worth their salt knows, white dragons are impatient eaters and will often swallow thieves and slain adventurers whole. A dragon of Bitterstrike's age would have a veritable hoard in her stomach, not to mention the blades and spearheads that dot her gnarled hide.

With the she-dragon gutted and looted, the slayers find that the humongous stone doors were damaged during the battle. There appears to be just enough room for them to squeeze through into the dark hall beyond. Preparing themselves for whatever may come, our heroes enter the dusty dragonhalls.
