WTF Windows (audio issue)

I play games sometimes and use a microphone to communicate, but it seems like Windows is arbitrarily deciding somehow that my mic inputs (both the front panel and the motherboard input) are "currently unavailable" for some unspecified reason. It only does this intermittently - sometimes it's working perfectly, and other times it's "unavailable".

Any ideas what's going on? When I went to search for new drivers it said that mine were already current.
