Recommendations for Police Procedural / Cop / Detective Novels?

I'm looking for good police procedural novels to read to get myself in the mindset for an upcoming project I have in that same genre. But it's not the type of books I've ever been drawn to, and it's a really massive genre. Closest I've ever read was some pulp and noir private eye series when I was a kid. Sorting out the actual novels that deal with police detectives from the rest of the crime genre has been kind of hard to do with Google searches - can anyone recommend anything they've found good before? Any books about NYPD detectives would be ideal, but I'm willing to give anything a shot.

These are about a senior detective in Oxford, England but they're very good detective reading. Inspector Morse series by Colin Dexter. Eventually made into a long running TV series. Currently has a spinoff with Inspector Lewis who was Morse's sidekick at the time.

there are several ways to go here. First, almost any of the recent Michael Connelly "Harry Bosch" books, The Drop, The Black Echo, etc. are solid. My novel, Easy Target, is partially set in NYC and was fact-checked by an NYPD Dep. Inspector friend of mine.

Giles Blunt has a series of novels that i'd consider the best mystery series I've ever read. They're about a Canadian detective in a remote area, so about as removed from NYC as you can get, but surprisingly well written for the genre, with good, complex characters. It starts with 40 Words For Sorrow - give that one a shot and I think you'll want to continue the series.

I just got totally hooked on the Lincoln Rhyme series by Jeffery Deaver. The first two at least are set in NY (I just finished the third, which is not). So far they are SUPERB. Protagonist is a former forensic dude with the NYPD and the partner is a cop. The first book is the Bone Collector. A bit outdated - originally pubbed in late 1990's, and the first one was made into a movie with Denzel Washington, which I haven't seen yet. Most of the reviews I've read say the books are WAY the heck better than the movie, though.

Go read anything and everything by both James Ellroy and Elmore Leonard.
