We sent a robot to Mars. Just a few minutes ago it punched through the atmosphere at over 5km/s and landed neatly to take some snapshots. 150 million miles from Earth.

I cannot imagine the joy for those NASA workers who had to put everything together, run tests ad nauseam, and rest everything on pure calculation. This is like winning the Super Bowl for nerds.

Someone said, right after the safe landing announcement, "Let's see where our Curiosity takes us."

Cheesy AND lovable at the same time =)

Also, I was thinking... what if that first picture has an alien in it? Was anyone else giggling a little?

There was a moment after the wheel appeared that I played out the "humanoid legs walk in front of camera" scene in my head.

Just fantasizing about the expressions that would elicit.

This is still pretty freaking awesome.

I'm thinking of installing a monitor in my bathroom, where I would like footage of the touchdown confirmation primed to play once the flush is pressed.

Double Nasa's budget, and cut defense spending to pay for it. Stop building aircraft carriers and start building more space robots, IMO.

The hi-rez of the first shot ends up showing that someone has already scrawled "WASH ME" on the dust cover for the aft camera mount with his finger, or the Martian anatomical equivalent.

How nifty is it btw that we just put a mobile nuclear power plant on a different planet?

I believe not -- my understanding is that images are transmitted through one of a couple of satellites orbiting Mars, and the one which monitored descent has already passed beyond the horizon from the landing site.

On the other hand I have no idea when the next one pops up over the horizon so maybe?

Nah, Earth has already passed beyond the horizon. The Earth has set. There is an Earth set where it is. Ahhh so cool!

    WHAT THE FUCK

Someone on this hangout of science folks just said that this whole mission cost 1/5th of the London Summer Olympics

    Budget for Curiosity: $2.5 billion.

Budget for London 2012: $14.47 billion.

I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.

    NASA's entire budget for 2012 is a pathetic $17.7b.

Somewhere between 1/6 and 1/3 of that is for launching and maintaining military satellites.

Another thing to consider: We're currently on track to build 10 new aircraft carriers by 2040. TEN. For a total of $104 billion dollars.

Fuck that. No more aircraft carriers. Give us more space science robots.
