How sad, and under what context?

Like, Journey's "Open Arms" is really fucking sad, given the right context.

Barber's Adagio for Strings is epically sad.

Def Leppard's "Love Bites" is romatically (albeit very cheesy) sad.

    As a quick top 5 I'd suggest:
    Elliott Smith - Condor Ave.
    Modest Mouse - Dramamine
Explosions in the Sky - A Song For Our Fathers
Of Montreal - The Repudiated Immortals
The Gothic Archies - Dreary, Dreary (though perhaps a bit too ironic if you're genuinely sad)

    Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley

    Boston - Augustana

The Forgotten Arm album by Aimee Mann. It tells the story of a couple and every song makes me want to kind of die.

Get Lonely - The Mountain Goats (holy jesus so depressing.)

    Forgiven - Deb Talan

Battleship Gray (or Grey... I don't remember :) ) - DJ Tiësto / Kirsty Hawkshaw
    Eternity - Robbie Williams
Bridge Over Troubled Water and The Only Living Boy in New York - Simon & Garfunkel
Tonight Is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel - Barenaked Ladies
The Luckiest and Fred Jones, Pt 2 - Ben Folds
My Way - Frank Sinatra - I know, odd choice, but if you listen to the lyrics, a lot of it is kinda sad.

Also - Film soundtrack related - especially sad/moving if you've seen the films
Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan
I Could Have Done More from Schindler's List
Comptine D'un Autre Ete - L'après-midi - Amelie (Admittedly, I don't know French, so I don't know if that's the right title, etc)

"Damn you and your Daily Doubles, you brigand!"

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

There are a lot of different ways to interpret "sad"

Don Mclean - Babylon (Watching your home burn to the ground.)
Offspring - Gone Away (Death of a loved one)
Chet Atkins - Still can't say goodbye (Death of a father.)
Tool - Prison Sex (Sexual abuse)
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt (addiction)
Foo Fighters - Everlong (Missing a long lost friend.)

I think most of Counting Crows album "August and Everthing After" is sad (minus "Rain King" and "Mr. Jones"), but also very good.

I played "Raining in Baltimore" on repeat for a while. The first line is, "The circus is falling". Then it just gets better/worse.

Metallica - Unforgiven, Unforgiven II, Outlaw Torn, Hero of the Day, Bleeding Me, Mama Said, Low Man's Lyric
Megadeth - A Tout Le Monde

See, there are so many different forms of sad songs, that being more specific would help a lot.

Elderly Woman Behind a Cash Register in a Small Town - Pearl Jam

Missed the Boat - Modest Mouse

These just came on, and both seemed to fit the mood. It's probably worth noting that the music of the song sets a mood for me more than the lyrics do. This is pretty subjective as well, cause a lot of songs evict different emotions in different people.

Piano Man by Billy Joel is one of my favorite 'sad' songs.

That and 'You Never Know' by Immortal Technique, if hip hop is your thing.

A Finnish song iirc, it's extremely sad, even if you don't understand a word of it.

Uh, why are you looking for sad songs anyways?

It's Raining Men, the Geri Halliwell version. Totally sad. If you listen to it, you will be sad too.

In the not joking realm, not exactly songs, but... Chopin Prelude in E Minor, Largo, Mozart Concerto no. 23 in A Major, Movement 2 (Andante), and Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no. 2, Movement 2 (Adagio Sostenuto)... are what a piano would sound like if it were suicidal.

As has been mentioned before (but I'll second it), anything on August and Everything after, especially Raining in Baltimore, Round Here, and Anna Begins (my personal favorite).

Also, I didn't see anyone mention 'Hello', by Evanescence. This one really kills me.
