A heads-up for newcomers and devs
Read this next bit. It's sort of important and I sort of don't want us getting shut down because of one silly goose.

I missed this thread earlier, and am going to add some rules to it. The general concern is that this thread will be like honey to the flies that are spammers.

The first rule isn't new: you aren't allowed to pimp your own game. It's fair game if other people have brought it up, but don't remind people to vote or similarly annoying stuff. You also shouldn't beat around the bush and just come out and say that you're a dev should your game come up in the thread. This applies to regular users. While we love to support community members, spammers will see your self-promotion as a license to annoy us.

The second is that new users who start suggesting games will probably be treated as sitewhores. If you're new, come in here to suggest stuff, and aren't showing any kind of behavior that suggests you are trying to integrate with the rest of the community, then you'll probably be punished.

The third is to basically not be obnoxious. Don't constantly bug people to vote for some game you really want to see on Steam. If you are THAT passionate, then stick something subtle in your sig.

Hopefully, this shouldn't affect most of you, but just a heads-up.
tl;dr: don't advertise, don't post games if you're new to the forums, and don't obsessively post about that one game you like. If you can't follow those rules, well...

Welcome to the Steam Greenlight thread! Here we discuss SGL, the myriad of games proposed on it, and which submissions our classy community should upvote or downvote. This is not a general Steam thread. Please limit such discussions to the proper channels instead.

What's Steam Greenlight?
Introduced to Steam Workshop in August 2012, Steam Greenlight allows the community to decide which games should make it onto the Steam platform. Basically, developers submit information about their work (it can be at any stage in the development process), and fellow servants of the Newell then either upvote the game (bringing it one step closer to Steam distribution) or downvote it (removing it from the servant's pool of new submissions, and indicating to the Newell that this game is Not Worth It). There's a more complete FAQ here, which should cover most questions about the platform.

There's so many games! How will I ever get through all these submissions?
I'm glad you asked! SGL enables users to create collections of games to vote on all at once. We want to make upvoting games that truly deserve a place on Steam as easy as possible, so I'm maintaining a collection of games we Arcadians believe are of outstanding class. If you think you've found a sufficiently classy submission, be sure to bring it up in the thread. It takes a large push to get a game greenlit, and with so many randomly-ordered submissions to sort through, word-of-mouth is essential to getting that one shining gem through the selection process.

I'm lazy and don't want to read through the whole thread. What's the best of the best and why should I care?
Current picks as of 01/09/2012, in no particular order:
  • Routine (in development): first-person survival horror game on a moonbase with permadeath. Looks absolutely fantastic so far, definitely worth an upvote even if you're not into the genre.
  • NeoTokyo (released): F2P futuristic shooter built on the Source SDK Base (you have to own a Source game such as HL2 to get it). If nothing else, upvote it because one of the screenshots is a photo of one of the devs with the Newell.
  • Oniken (released): solid 2D action game modelled after the 8-bit greats of yore. Available on Desura and was recently featured in an Indie Royale bundle. Really no reason not to upvote this one.
  • Cute Things Dying Violently (released): fast-paced, reflex-testing 2D action game making its way over from XBLIG and Desura, complete with level editor. Featured in the 2011 Indie Games Summer Uprising as well as a recent Indie Gala bundle. Ignore the comments, they are filled with the ramblings of silly geese.
  • InFlux (in development): 3D puzzler/adventure hybrid, currently in development for the big three + iOS. A nice change of pace from the other games on this list, since being able to literally sit back and relax is a goal here.
  • Unepic (released): Metroidvania/old-school RPG hybrid. Don't let the less-than-stellar translation fool you, there's nothing half-assed about this one. Recently featured in an Indie Royale bundle and available on Desura.
  • Worlds (in development): dark cel-shaded 3D action-adventure stealth game. Currently a work-in-progress, but you can buy the game right now and give it a whirl. Just remember to upvote when you're done, 'kay?
  • Signal Ops (in development): tactical espionage with a twist. Direct mans from your control room in a variety of scenarios, either on your own or in XP co-op with two buddies. Easily one of the more original titles on SGL.
  • Gnomoria (in development): do you like Dwarf Fortress? Do you hate DF's complete lack of user friendliness? If you answered "yes" to either of those questions, you will love Gnomoria. Currently in alpha with a free demo available.
  • Octodad: Dadliest Catch (in development): just watch the trailer. That is all. (there's a prequel, but I know nothing about it except that it's free)

The Rules of the Greenlight Thread

This is just a mod edit to lay down some basic rules to keep out some of the sitewhoring that this thread could attract. This will not affect the majority of you, but you may want to give it a read anyways. If you think someone is violating a rule, then don't yell at them: quietly report the post and we'll determine if it requires action.

The first rule isn't new: you aren't allowed to pimp your own game. It's fair game if other people have brought it up, but don't remind people to vote or similarly annoying stuff. The third is to basically not be obnoxious. Don't constantly bug people to vote for some game you really want to see on Steam. If you are THAT passionate, then stick something subtle in your sig.
