    PAX XXXX for sure.
Given how well supernova and EBExpo go having a PAX here shouldn't be a problem and should be awesome. I'm gonna put my hand up to be an enforcer for sure.
My guess is either Melbourne or Sydney.
Melbourne because it seems to have been doing a lot more video gaming related events then anywhere else or Sydney just for international airport convenience.

Sydney has the airport, it's "the international city", has good convention options and lots of hotels and, as you point out, Melbourne has enough gaming events already :P

As an Australian i am completely amazed we are getting the first international PAX beating out Canada and Britain.

I know there is only about a 1% chance that it will be in Perth but will defiantly make the short flight to where its at (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide)

PS: Please do not have PAX in Adelaide it was their fault we Aussies have had to wait so long for the R18+ rating for video games.

Yes, no one in Australia like Adelaide anyway!

But I can't wait for it to come to Australia....would be an awesome time and it's us that will make it a success!

All of the SE++ Aus Thread crew are going to sign up to enforce (especially when we were planning our second nationwide gathering next year, too). I will personally make sure of this, and we will help make sure PAX AU is just AMAZING.

It's pretty cool that people hear about AUS PAX and they already want to help out!
And of course, if anyone is confused about what enforcing actually means, you can PM me. I'm not an authority, but I have been doing it for 3 years. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't hard work, but any work is more fun with your friends and when it's work you want to do.
Also yes, it is a thing you have to apply for, like any other job. However recruiting won't be happening for a long time from now, seeing as they haven't even announced where it will be >_> It's just something to keep in the back of y'alls heads, but I think it'd be good info for the head of the enforcers to know that there is quite a lot of interest from Australians. I think she'll be glad about that :)

I also enforced from 2004 - 2008 before they stole me away to work on the show full time, if anyone has any questions I am available.

    Hello all!
Long time listener, first time called. Super excited for PAX to hit our shores, though from Melbourne, hoping its in Sydney so it feels like a small holiday, that and if its at the exhibition center it will end up at the casino...where i work and am not allowed to enter. So here's for Sydney! Also would be interested in enforcing, love being part of a team that works behind the scenes!

Looking forward to posting more on these forums.

Having been born and raised in Australia - and living there until I was 19... it seems weird. It is very unexpected. It seems destined for failure, even. Sorry, I love Australia - but a lifetime of expecting nothing or otherwise being letdown sets my expectations to "zero". I dunno. I very, very vaguely remember some one-time games event held in one of the suburbs of Sydney (around the time the SEGA Saturn was dying) and perhaps sponsored by The Games Wizard's, and another SEGA event being held at Australia's Wonderland that concentrated mostly on the GameGear and the long-dead magazine MegaZone. That's it. That tells you what kind of market you're dealing with. Wouldn't there have been an "Austronics Entertainment Expo" by now if there was a market? Not an insult to Aussies. I am one. The only place I can see it even being remotely successful is Sydney (maybe Melbourne) - and if it coincides with when I visit next year, I'm there...

I think they could most successfully have it around Darling Harbour. Lots of locals. Lots of tourists.

You do know about the EB Expo right? Was last year on the Gold Coast, pulled over 17K people, and it's estimated to pull more this year. Had loads of big name publishers and developers.

Not to mention all the other pop culture cons that happen around the country that are all going really swell. The four supernovas had 77K people last year over all the cons.

Seriously, PAXAU is gonna be fine.

Not to mention Gamesmasters in melbourne, an absolutely awesome exhibition and supernova. There's definitely a market in Aust for this thing. For consumers and exhibitors both.

I am so proud that you chose Australia for the next PAX. For years I have read PA. I gave to kickstarter cause I wanted to give something back. I've always told friend or gal or smurf or geek to read PA...but they are stubborn.

Wherever you hold it I will go. Make it indie and geeky and dicelike. Let the 8bit composers and ravers and sk8ts and boarders know. Tap the subcultures. You can do a lot. The potential is massive.

Plus if you can see the spider it's probably harmless. it's the one you can't see that getcha.

Also terribly keen for an Australian PAX. Will also fly wherever in Aus it happens to wind up. Unless it winds up in Brisbane. Then flying would just be silly as I could drive.

I have a feeling PAX is going to be in Brisbane. Halfway between East and Prime (June) is Winter in Australia, and Sydney will be cold and melbourne will be a schizophrenic freak like always (but probably freezing). Brisbane is very mild in winter, and it has that massive Southbank precinct, which is actually pretty cool. It also has a Mana Bar, which Sydney does not. There are some direct flights from the US to Brisbane, and it's a shorter flight for Asian nerds (Anyone from Southeast Asia thinking of coming?).

I am not approving or disapproving of the idea, it just strikes me as a likely target... for AirStrikes! Bwahahaha! You know, I think I could live without bananas if it also meant living without Queensland.

Yeah I suppose Brissy would be fine in winter. I could see them doing that

Why Melbourne? It has enough conventions already, Supanova in Melbourne is only 3 months before the proposed date, whereas Supanova isn't till November here in Brisbane and we pretty much have no other conventions.

Trust Kotaku to claim that they heard a 'rumour' it was going to be in Brissy, when it was just some bookings for Scott and Kris to be there in november next year. *eyeroll*

I'm sort of surprised that document, if it's real, wasn't kept confidental til a proper announcement happened though, I have to admit.

EDIT: Also, Melbourne showgrounds are like Perth showgrounds, right? Part outdoor, part indoor? Doesn't really sound like the best venue for something like PAX, honestly...

    Anzekay on
  • smerksmerk Registered User regular
So I was (probably) totally wrong. It's ok, I'm fine, totally used to that sort of thing.
At a guess the document was probably still confidential, and some staff member at Reed or the Show Ground or surrounding hotels or whatever simply leaked it. It's good to know, I just hope the early leak hasn't screwed up negotiations or hotel reservations etc.

PAXMEL! I knew it would be Melbourne all along of course. At least my hyperfancycaffinated trembling will keep me warm in the pelting sleet.

Do any Sydneysiders (or GoulburnSiders, WaggaWaggaSiders, Etc) have any interest in a Southbound train trip? The West Coast Train Trip at Prime is a pretty awesome start to PAX, and it would be pretty damn cool to implement something similar here. The Syd-Mel trip is listed on the Countrylink website as taking A bit over eleven hours, and lasts either overnight (which i don't recommend) or 7:42 to 18:55 in one day.

This is irrelevant if the Trip is too terrible for words. Has anyone taken the train SYD-MEL? What's it like?

What is this 'Pants' of which you speak?
  • AnzekayAnzekay Registered User regular
I'm going to take this leak with a tablespoon of salt until there is an official announcement. It is Kotaku, after all.

At any rate I doubt the hotel reservations will suffer from some sort of leak, but I hope nothing else will be at risk.

  • thegh0ststhegh0sts Sydney, NSWRegistered User regular
if you say it's a leak did penny arcade confirm or deny it?

Well, alleged leak. I would assume that if the document is real someone leaked it to Kotaku or someone who passed it onto Kotaku. I somewhat doubt it was directly given to Kotaku.

So, I guess if it's real it's a leak, and if it isn't real then it doesn't matter what we call it :P

PAX East 2012 was on the same weekend as Anime Boston (and Sakuracon and NorWesCon and probably some other cons I don't know about) and Anime Boston had a record high attendance. If PAX Aus is the same weekend as AVCon (or some other convention), I doubt it will affect the other convention significantly.

I have not yet heard anything official about the dates or location of PAX Aus, so don't count on any rumors you see online. Official PAX Aus news will be tweeted by @PAXAus.

Australia is a very small population, and PAX will take a lot of the local adelaide gamers as well as the interstate people that come over - no chance that the local pro games will go to AVCon instead of PAX. And the major sponsor is a Melbourne company who would llikely go to pax instead. AVCon is going to have to shift, I guess, if the rumour is true.
