I have to recommend a Magic/Melee/Both based character for Arcanum as a first playthrough. Technology is a headache if you don't already know how it works and plan ahead extensively.
Magic is far more flexible.
At the very least, you want to put a point into at one of the combat skills at the very begining. Thanks to way xp works, where you gain extra XP from doing damage to enemies, being able to kill some of them on your own will get you a few early levels very quickly.
That's not to say the charasmatic weakling won't work. One of my favorite playthroughs was a Female Human with the Miracle Operation Backgroud that I built for tech and talking. She might have been barely strong enough to hold her pistol with two hands, but she never had any problems with fighting thanks to the army of followers she had (the neutral/tech-leaning ones equiped with gear I had made) that she could point out bad guys to for them to kill.
I'm still learning stuff about Alpha Protocol. The wikia suggests lots of little things I never picked up on, like the CIA taps in Rome affecting stuff in Taipei, or more Parker and Marburg interactions in the endgame.

Just got it downloaded and played around a bit. Orcs flying Davinci style single wing planes? Oh hell yes. Picked Solomon Doone for the excellent background. Then I find out that my Necromancer cant even speak with the dead from the get go. All I can hear in my head is "DAAAAD.... i dont want to talk to mother!"
holy crap i can send suggestive emails in alpha protocol.
why has this been on my hard drive unplayed for so long.
Wait till you get to our lord and savior Stephen Heck.
Alpha Protocol is the only game I've ever obsessively beaten three times in under a week.

playing both of those alpha protocol videos are the same time is pure greatness... The first video would be greatly improved with the seconds song in the background.
I think I recall there being an Arcanum demo on one of my old PC Gamer discs. I loaded it up.. but it looked so shitty and controlled so shitty I couldn't really get past it. Not after already having played stuff like Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale.
I wanted to like Arcanum so badly. The setting and character development mechanics are amazing. It's too bad every experience I've had with the game was so downright terrible. I think the last time I tried to play I ended up with the majority of my party laying on the ground watching two NPCs wiff at each other for 5 minutes.
Alpha Protocol. Try a totally insane psychopath kill everyone* run.
*Except Heck and people who love awesome classic music.
Alpha Protocol ending (well, one of them) spoilers:
The best part about my inept psychopath not-very-secret agent run was that I got the "Thorton, Inc." ending.
This is the ending that seems intended to wrap up an "I've made friends with everyone" run, as it involves Thorton methodically listing to Leland all of the powerful and influential people that are now working with Thorton, not Leland.
Except when you murder or alienate everyone you encounter except for Heck, that list is really short.

Ha! I was at that panel. It was awesome.

Not only did you not find the hidden stream, but instead you found all the wang streams on Chatroulette. Critical failure!
So, in celebration, I want to play (another) Obsidian game. I'm just finishing up New Vegas, so the choices of the games that I have installed are:
Dungeon Seige III - I've never played it.
Mask of the Betrayer: Loved it, only played it once.
Alpha Protocal: Never done a veteran run.
Battlenet ID: MildC#11186 - If I'm in the game, send me an invite at anytime and I'll play.

Nathan really went off the deep end there.
Not sure why this entered my mind, but I really wish we could see a love child of DX:HR AND AP.

He's got sicilian ancestery. Man's born with alcohol in his blood.
Also, I hear he's quite fun to hang around with.
