Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it,
follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given
their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

That said, amateurs can, and do, produce good work. Aeon/DOTA Warcraft maps, Counter-Strike, and the ReaperBot are all good examples of this. But that level of talent is very rare in amateur circles.
I'm not expecting high quality out of this. But that's not even low quality. There have been free fan-made mods of games that look better than that.
The 2D in the beginning of the trailer was perfect. It was high quality, and it animated well. Even if it was like Paper Mario (although not with the paper aspect) as a 2D on 3D game it would look so much better
edit: also, that's not my mouse cursor. that was in the trailer
agreed. also, people generally don't know what they want, so basing your game around what they say it should be will lead to disaster, as you so rightly say.

From a graphics perspective, I really just keep shouting this in my head, so I'm going to write it out.
YOU DON'T PUT "REALISTIC" LIGHTING ON CARTOON MODELS
WHAT THE FUCK
YOU NEED CARTOON LIGHTING FOR THAT
If you want to use realistic lighting, you use realistic textures so that the two elements complement each other. Putting realistic lighting on a cartoony texture makes people see the lighting and expect realism, but then the texture is perfectly smooth and solid-colored, which is jarringly unnatural. What you need to do, as a quick fix, is make the light cut off at a certain angle, and be fully-lit above that angle. This gives a clear line between the "lit" side and the "unlit" side and at least that way the brain doesn't expect realism and then get cartoon.
Anyone see this yet:
