Yo, it's Time for Mitt Romney's Def Zinger Jam Y'all! : [Prezzy Debate #1] Oct 3rd 8pm EST

KanaKana Registered User regular
edited October 2012 in Debate and/or Discourse
Broadcast Details: (The details page says the live stream starts at 8, but the broadcast is listed to start at 9:30)
TV Channels – Each debate will be broadcast live on C-SPAN, ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, as well as all cable news channels including CNN, Fox News and MSNBC among others.
Live Streams can be found here - http://gigaom.com/video/presidential-debate-live-stream/
Topic: Domestic policy
Moderator: Jim Lehrer (Host of NewsHour on PBS)

Format:
The debate will focus on domestic policy and be divided into six time segments of approximately 15 minutes each on topics to be selected by the moderator and announced several weeks before the debate.
The moderator will open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a discussion of the topic."

Supposedly three of the topics discussed will be health care, the economy, and "the role of government". Jim Lehrer has never been one to challenge his debaters, so you can probably expect to get angry at the TV a lot.

The Debaters

Barry O'Bama (Sitting President from 1992-2012, running for his 6th straight term)
O-Bama--54749.jpg

It has been recently discovered by the Drudge Report that the president is, in fact, a black man, a detail which had previously never been mentioned by conservative pols or media. The Romney campaign expects this shocking revelation to shake up the race any day now... Any day now. Obama is well-known as a radical left-wing moderate, and his use of old Republican policies from the 90s helps assure his base that their party will stand up and fight for what they believe in - the Republican party platform from 15 years ago.

Willard "Mitt" Romney, former Governor of the Soviet State of Massachusetts and Savior of the Olympics
mitt-romney-hair.jpg

Mitt Romney and his beautiful hair are/n't proud to be from the great/socialist state of Utah/Massachusetts. He opposed/supported universal health care in his own state, which is why he knows we should/n't have national universal health care. Romney is a strong proponent of trees that are just the right height and America. He has a variety of plans to help America thrive, which are secret so don't ask you can't see them. Now for gods sake, look at that perfectly coiffed hair! Could a man be any more presidential?!?

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

Oh man, ground floor. Ground floor!

I haven't been this excited about anything ever, and that includes the time I once found $10 on the sidewalk.

Might I suggest that we start a traditional POTUS debate drinking game?

Every time Mitt Romney says the word "redistribute" or some variation thereof, you have to take a shot. At your minority neighbor. You all saw it, he was trespassing! This ground won't stand itself.

Oh boy, this is going to be exciting / infuriating tonight.

I'm predicting some anger at the TV, Mrs. Zagdrob telling me to quiet down before I wake up the little one, then an argument about how this is why we can't watch politics and I get too worked up. Fifteen minutes later she'll either be going to bed in a huff, or we'll be watching yesterday's NCIS.

About typical for politics in our house.

CBS has to get Survivor in.

Are your expectations that your desire to burn the American Media to the ground will rise to near pitchfork levels? Because that's pretty much the only thing you should assume with an American political debate.

Yeah, I never expect debates to make me happy. Both guys have known what the questions will be for weeks, any push for Romney to get specific will just result in him attacking Obama, and Lehrer never holds candidates feet to the fire anyway, so Romney will be free to do it. Both candidates will try to suck up as much free air time as possible delivering stump speech lines, and then the media will decide that Romney won that debate because he needs to in order to keep this race's ratings up.

OK, so here's a thing I do not get. Fallows, who I respect, writes a massive thing on the strengths/weaknesses of the candidates in the debate format. He concludes that Romney is great in this format largely on the strength of two pieces of evidence:

    1) His debates with Ted Kennedy from 1994, which he entered roughly tied and left a 20 point loser
    2) His debates with the collection of chucklefucks that ran for President this year.

Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.

The only thing I remember about his debates in the primaries was "It's my turn now, you had your turn, it's my turn."

Other than that he just kind of sat in the background most of the time. At least in my memory he didn't stand out in the least.

I could be misremembering the article, but I thought it was that of all the various venues that campaigning takes (stump speeches, grip and grin, press conferences, major speeches, debates, &c.) Romney is best at debating. Which doesn't necessarily say much, considering how bad he is at the other ones. It's all relative rather than in comparison to an objective Platonic ideal debater. So don't underestimate him because he's so bad on the stump.

For two, he actually was pretty good at the primary debates even though they weren't particularly challenging. Especially considering the fact that there were literally (and not Biden literally) two dozen debates that he took part in. There were a couple big gaffes that happened when he got miffed, but on the whole he put in a very workmanlike performance. Which isn't going to be enough to turn things around, but its not like he's going to be in over his head either. Unless he goes in swinging for the fences and stumbles on his own attempts at grandiloquence he's going to come out of this more or less tied with Obama's performance. Which is pretty good so far as debates go. Just not good enough for him in the campaign given the status quo.

  • kildykildy Registered User regular
What I mostly remember is that Romney did awesome in one primary debate, and promptly fired his debate coach when people started giving the coach props for the massive turnaround in Romney's performance.

I don't know how you can look at the clown car of assholery that was the GOP primary debate as a positive for Romney. Well I know how some people can, but come on. When you are standing next to Bachmann, Perry, Gingrich, and fucking Rick Santorum its hard not to look good. And Romney didn't even manage that! He was just the default canidate that the GOP electorate kept trying to run away from.

Typically they're an hour and a half. Longer if you want to hear all the spin afterwards, but that tends to leave you worse off than if you just turned the TV off.

There's also the problem with Romney not having laid out any policy examples going into the debates, and when he talks specifics the american people DO NOT LIKE THEM! So you have someone who the american people do not like, pushing plans that they do not want, and he has a charisma problem.

So what do we think the over/under will be that this will just be an hour and a half of 30 second to 2 minute stump speeches only vaguely answering the questions.
"Mr. Romney's team has concluded that debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers that he has memorized and has been practicing on aides since August," reporters Ashley Parker and Peter Baker wrote in the paper.
    ...
The Obama team predictably pounced on that one.
"We also saw in reports that Mitt Romney and his team have been working on zingers and special lines for months," Obama spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki told reporters over the weekend. "That's not what the president's focus is on. So if you're expecting that, that's probably not what he's going to deliver on."

According to a ABC News/Washington Post national poll released Monday, 55% of likely voters say they think the president will win the debate, with 31% saying that Romney will be victorious.

I also saw a similar poll showing roughly the opposite where people thought Ryan would win the VP debate. I guess Biden won't have to lower expectations much before showing the world the guy is not a policy wonk.

A few of my friends are suggesting having a debate watching party. I can't decide if I hate myself enough to go.

Having a party to watch a debate is like having a party to wash my car. It's a festive occasion held in honor of a huge chore that only sounds fun if you think there's the possibility that college girls in bikinis are going to show up with a bucket of suds. Hint: college girls in bikinis are not going to show up with a bucket of suds.

And considering how few undecided voters are still out there, I'm not sure anyone remembered to bring a car to the aforementioned car wash metaphor.

I'm more interested in seeing what the TV ratings look like for the debate and reading the summary roundups for those undecided voters who are going to build most of their impression about the debate based upon how it's reported tomorrow. But I guess I can't really skip out on my friends....

    Yeah he'll destroy Obama.

    The answer is simple.

    Just lie.

If everything Romney says is patently untrue he will win. I'm talking monstrous, obvious, heretofore unimaginable lies of a magnitude far outstripping anything we have ever seen, with pants so on fire that they exceed the Planck Temperature.

You cannot fight that kind of blatant dishonesty if it is shoveled on at a pace approaching c. The media will not call him on his lies and Obama will be positively dumbfounded that a presidential candidate would dare to say such things. Will the American people fact check it? Maybe, but even if they do you'll have entire news organizations dedicated to obfuscating the facts themselves and replacing them with a narrative of "what he meant to say" and "a more concise phrasing".

Romney will win, and we will not know anything more about his policy at the end of the day than we did at the beginning, and noone will care.
