Ladies and Gentlemen, I regret that I am the bearer of bad news.
Hostess, the company which make Twinkies, Snoballs, and a bunch of other cake-mimic products, is shutting down
Apparently, this was prompted by a worker's strike. The strike was the result of a plan to slash the pay of Hostess factory workers. Hostess claimed that the strike prevented them from keeping the company afloat.
So, the company is closing and the workers are all being fired. So this is bad news for pretty much everyone. (Except nutritionists, they're having a party. Bring healthy snacks only, please)
Anyway, they're going to deliver and sell the products that have already been made, and that's it.
You know how they say that a Twinkie can last forever?
Well, it's time to find out. They're not making any more.

Well, they have said that they're going to try to sell their assets, so I'd imagine another company will buy the rights and start making them again.
Not bad.

Won't someone just buy them up?

Twinkies are shit though. Tastykake makes the superior snack pastries.

Its a mix of all of that. In January they were approaching Ch11, hired new management to try to salvage the company, but they're so far down the hole that any sort of strike basically ruins them so may as well throw in the towel and put their assets up for sale and let somebody else make a go of it.
7-11 should buy them up and repackage everything
I don't plan on changing this.
Part of me thinks they should have had funds tucked away in case a situation arises and they can't meet production demands for a short period of time. So it looks like they weren't in great shape to start with.
However they actually did tell the workers, "we as a company do not have the finances to cover a nation wide strike. This company will have to close if you do this"
So its not like the workers weren't warned.
What I'm saying is both sides are at fault here.

Well, that's kind of bullshit, because it's not the production workers fault that Hostess was in such financial straits. And pay cuts were a further reaction to poor performance on the part of management. And yet their jobs were the ones being held hostage when they decided to fight for a fair wage.
I wouldn't say that's indicative of shared blame
I really do wonder how much more money would have been saved if the higher-ups cut their own pay instead of cutting pay of the people actually doing the work. How typical. The rich have robbed us of treats.
"LET THEM EAT CAKE" my ass.
Understandably, the workers might have thought they were bluffing.
I weep for zingers and the cupcakes and powdered mini donuts
