FWIW, I think it is noteworthy that there hasn't been a Half Life title since Valve dropped the Orange Box on consoles. Half Life titles are supposed to push the envelope. I think Gabe Newell is waiting for the next console generation to drop the next Half Life title simultaneously on PC and consoles. They want to get Steam running on consoles more.
Valve will tell Sony and Microsoft that their options are either allow Steam on their consoles, or Steam eats their lunch and launches their own console.
@enderandrew That still doesn't explain where Half Life 2 Episode 3 has disappeared to. I can see them saving Half Life 3 for a new console, but HL2 Ep3 should be using the same old engine as the other HL2 games.

There is plenty of info out there about how Valve is actually run as a company. Only projects that someone takes the helm on and gathers support for actually get produced. Mr. Newell doesn't tell people what to work on. Nobody wants to be the person who screwed up HL3, or episode 3, so it's never going to get made. Their handbook is a fascinating read. http://newcdn.flamehaus.com/Valve_Handbook_LowRes.pdf

Steam is on the PS3, but not for many games yet. That is why I said they want Steam on consoles more. They want to make further inroads.
And it is true that Valve employees are free to work on whatever projects they want, but while employees aren't micro-managed, I'm sure Gabe has to make the final call to publish a title or not.
I wouldn't be shocked in the plot of HL2:Episode 3 gets rolled into HL:3. It would make up for the wait if you paid $60 and basically got two games for it.

Though, not cool to remind us of the non-existence of HL3, Kathleen, not cool!

Or are HL2 Ep3 and HL3 the same thing now?

Well then, my reasons to buy a 360 just dropped down to 2. Even if it takes a while, that means I'll eventually be able to buy it elsewhere.
And no, I don't current own a PS3 either, but I have 3 reasons to buy one at the moment.
