VoIP: The communication revolution [1st post]

Most people know what VOIP is (Voice Over IP), and the profound effects it will eventually have over the way we communicate. A world where voice communications are no longer controlled by the large evil communication companies. A world where you no longer have interstate and international calls to worry about, it's all the same

So anyway, in order for the boom to takes place, it needs to begin somewhere. People need to start using it. So I put it to you to install a VoIP app, then get your friends to install a VoIP app, then get your family to install a VoIP app, then get them to get thier frends to installa VoIP app. As interest increase, as will the technology.

You get the idea. It needs to begin somewhere.

Anyway, I'm downloading Skype at the moment, and will install it shortly. If people have a better app to use, by all means, post it. We want to find the best app available to use.

http://www.skype.com

I'll compile a list of all the skype numbers people post

Remember, tell your friends/family!

Tell them about head set/usb phone options!

Let's get the ball rolling

I tried Skype a couple of times. Works like a charm.

I have "real" VoIP as well. Much better audio quality than normal telephone.

The real killer ap is the ease of use in the actual communication device itself - nobody I know is going to hold a tiny microphone up to their mouth to speak like I do.

We need to figure out the best kind of mic to go along with this.

    Also, Skype is wonderful.

One of the most prominant things we can do to get this widespread, at least across the forums, is to make sure our Skype handle is accessable somewhere, like in our sig or something. We need to make it as easy as possible for people to just download the app, punch in our name, and at least have a quicky conversation.

Also, does skype have multiple user "rooms" where multiple-person conversations can take place? That would be awesome.

    Indeed. I'm installing it now

Also, I'm looking at USB phones. It looks as though I can get one for around AU$40, which I'm willing to fork out.

There should be other cheaper headset options available too

    I'll research

people need to start using this

Does anyone happen to know if the Xbox Live headset is PC compatable? It's all I have at the moment and it'd be perfect for this and ventrilo.

It uses the same plug as my cellphone, so I'm thinking not without an aapter of some sort.

    Well, that works remarkable well

I think I'll pick up a USB headset so I don't need to hold the mic

But I was talking to exo, and was very clear, even over the stupidly long distance between us. Lag wasn't a problem either

That was AMAZING. I can't wait until my USB headset comes in.

Also... 500 minutes of talk time to any phone in the US for $12 on the site. Not too shabby.

You might want to turn on Authorize user so you don't get pranks

Once you have enough contacts you can make it so you only accept calls from contacts

Sounds like a great idea so I figure I'd give it a try. My handle is mgrmoose. I'm not a very big phone person so expect short conversations and a lot of silence. This is great because now I could use this when I move out to talk to my parents. My dad is always wanting to try something new and he already has a headset so I know he's up for it. Anyway, good idea..
