What is The Pit?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCbUkUdo6TQ

Sword of the Stars: The Pit is an action RPG Rogue-alike set in the sci-fi universe of the Sword of the Stars 4X games. Players must make their way through the Pit - a vast facility built by the god-like alien monster, the Bloodweaver. The goal - get to the bottom and find the cure for a deadly space plague that's killing your home colony. The Pit is filled with hostile aliens from all over the galaxy and an army of insane robots, all of whom want to see you dead. You must level up and improve your character's survival and combat skills to find a way to reach the bottom.

The Pit is also Kerberos Productions first indie title, step one in our long term goal to become fully independent game developers.

The Pit is available now from Gamersgate and Steam!

You can also try the demo out here.

Overview

-Choose from 3 Character classes - Marine, Scout, and Engineer, each with different advantages.
-Go up levels and improve your skills by fighting monsters, salvaging technology, and crafting equipment and weapons.
-Fight dozens of enemies from the Sword of the Stars universe.
-Use over 30 weapons and armor-types including laser guns, flame-throwers, plasma cannons, powered Brawler armor and lightning blades.
-Use randomized augmentation items to modify your weaponry and armor. They're different every play-through - you won't know what they do until you use them.
-Find and craft special equipment from scavenged supplies and items. Locate and decode hidden messages to uncover crafting recipes.
-Dozens of room types filled with traps, treasure, and technology.
-30 levels, randomized with each play-through and growing in size the deeper you go.
-You'll die. A lot. But each play-through will add info to your SOTSDEX - a record of all items, monsters, recipes, and messages you've found that spans every game you play. Each death will only make you stronger...
-4 difficulty settings - Easy, Medium, Hard, and Insane! The higher the difficulty, the greater the variety of items you can find.

    Likin' it.

Combat has some elements of Doom RL, character development is a bit Deus-Ex-ish, and there's some Mystery Dungeon elements in there too. Love the music and art.

    Also it's hard.

    Needs a Food Dungeon.

OK why isn't this game getting more exposure?

I just played for an hour and it is seriously one of the best indie games I've played. Think FTL quality.

All the little lore snippets, monster codex, hacking and deciphering and lockpicking and crafting...WOW. This is a rogue-like that has it ALL. More people need to pick this up ASAP. So great!!!!

Kerberos has received a lot of feedback about the Pit, and the buzz is largely positive. There's a news thread on the forums where you can check out reviews.

Response to the Pit has been very encouraging all around. And there'll be more to come soon.

Love the game. I feel a bit biased as I can never turn down a rogue-like but still, great game. The only major issue I've found with the game so far is when you're hit with blindness for 30+ rounds or so. There are times where when damage numbers appear of a creatures head they'll follow the creature to the next tile, making it rather easy to track their movement even while blind. I'm sure you guys knew that but I felt like this post needed more substance :P

But I can't! I need the game to punish me for walking through a blind trap without paying attention! Rogue-like masochism!

Also, it brings me joy to see that an update adding new monsters and items is already out. Keep up the awesome work.

I love rogue-likes, I love Sword of the Stars, I dig the art style I'm seeing here...

Guess I'm buying this when I get home.

Is time a gift or punishment?

Wait, is THAT what this is? I saw it on Steam's new releases a while back and assumed it was a Sword of the Stars 2 expansion of some description. Apparently I should have been paying more attention to it, because I'm a sucker for anything even tangentially related to roguelikes these days.

This game is fantastic. I think I'll be spending a lot of time playing this. Completing the game is going to take a while because of the difficulty and figuring out the recipes is going to add a lot of game time. Very fun and addictive game.

This game is fantastic. I think I'll be spending a lot of time playing this. Completing the game is going to take a while because of the difficulty and figuring out the recipes is going to add a lot of game time. Very fun and addictive game.

Especially since we keep adding more. But there's actually a recipe that makes it easier to get recipes, so there's that.

Might seems to be much more useful than the other two stats since it increases inventory space and max hunger meter.

Also, Von Neumann Probes are the devil.

Pretty consistent with the other games, naturally.

This game, has reaffirmed my belief that we can have roguelikes on Steam! Awesome roguelikes, the kind that punch you in the teeth and you want more!

My second playthrough I made it to floor 11 or 12 because I had a crazy-OP belt. Died because I didn't realize that a gigantic abomination is capable of squishing me like a bug :D

Update 1.0.4.0 is now live! Changes can be read here or on our forums here. Some UI tweaks, new recipes and monsters, and new messages you'll want to keep an eye out for.
Might seems to be much more useful than the other two stats since it increases inventory space and max hunger meter.

Can depend on what kind of game you're having. If you neglect finesse your combat capability will suffer, and without brains you'll have a harder time getting through traps and using equipment. Shutting down all the security bots on a floor can be more useful than all the sandwiches you can carry. There are items and craftables that can offset not having a lot of might, so it can be worthwhile to focus on another stat if you can get ahold of them.

But the other two stats are really only useful for the Marine. The Engineer starts with more than enough brain and reasonably good finesse and the scout only gets 1 stat point per level. Plus might increases mechanical, melee, and sword skills.

Insane difficulty, man you developers are just plain MEAN! I love it! Can't even bothe to switch to lower difficulty, cause insane is so much fun. Had one run where I literally took one step and died...delicious. I celebrate if I can make it to floor four. I'm glad that developer supped item drop rates, cause in insane difficulty, having plenty of food and ammunition is the one thing you don't have to sweat! This is "hard" mode done right!

    Big News!

Kerberos will be releasing an expansion for Sword of the Stars: The Pit - Mind Games!

    73372_563772440309458_1395361449_n.png

    Read our press release here.
The Mind Games expansion for Sword of the Stars: The Pit will be released as a paid Beta in June of 2013, to allow the developers to incorporate player feedback. The finished product will be released to a general audience in July of 2013.

    Features

-2 New Playable Characters to choose from! In addition to the original game’s Marine, Scout and Engineer characters, a new Human Psion is added and the first playable alien — the Tarka Ranger.

-10 New Floors of ancient, evil science to beat — in addition to the original 30.

-New Room Types, including Open Artificial Areas.

-New traps, new weapons, new items, and new recipes.

-New game mechanics, including Psionic Powers.

-New Psionic monsters and enemies drawn from the Sword of the Stars universe.

-2 New Play Modes, “Infinite” Mode and “Seriously?” Mode — a Level of Difficulty Beyond Insane.

-Expanded Meta-Game aspects, including the Ability to “Bank” XP and spare items during one session and start the next run of the game on a deeper level, with your “Banked” starting equipment.

This july, keep an open mind. Har har... sorry.

I imagine you've probably gotten this a billion times before, but you couldn't take my money fast enough if this were on IOS.
Indeed, we've received many such comments. Making it on iOS was part of the original game plan, and still something we plan to do in the future. With the Pit and other projects we're working on.

But the other two stats are really only useful for the Marine. The Engineer starts with more than enough brain and reasonably good finesse and the scout only gets 1 stat point per level. Plus might increases mechanical, melee, and sword skills.
Some classes will get more out of a skill than others. Again, it depends on the game you're having. In future it might be more critical for different classes.

Hope you enjoy the next difficulty level then!

Oh man, that expansion sounds totally sweet. Can't wait to play as the Tarka! Are there plans to add other playable alien characters? I was really surprised that the player characters were all human to begin with, given how awesome the other races are in SotS.

The Pit facility that the game takes place in is located on a world in human space, so the humans had dibs. As word of the Pit's existence leaks out, other races will be drawn to explore it. The tarka are just the first.

A great premise. Asuming I can actually get past level 9. Seriously though, a great game. I think my downfall is determining the recipes.

Mind Games goes on sale tomorrow for $4.99. It will require the original Pit to play.

It will add ten floors to the existing 30, so you'll need to make it to and escape floor 40 in order to successfully complete the game. There will be a few things that will make the trip from floor to floor a little shorter to account for the extended overall length ... if you're lucky enough to find them!

You will not - Mind Games will merge with the original game so you can retain all your recipes, SOTSDEX entries, and other information.

Picked this up yesterday with the expansion. I was almost late to work this morning. Great game, I love roguelikes, and this one appears to have quite a bit of depth.

The Psion seems to be way better than the other classes. I've had a much easier time with the Psion than with the Scout, Engineer, and Marine. I haven't really tried the Ranger yet.

I couldn't handle normal difficulty so I started an easy engineer game and am doing quite well. I'm on level 31 of the pit so far. My only complaint is that it's extremely time consuming...performing tasks and fighting should be more snappy IMO.

Maybe I need to switch down to easy. I've played normal a bit and the lowest I've ever gotten was 11 or 12 or something.

Maybe you've just been unlucky. Getting good equipment early on can really help your chances. Also, you can increase your skills to 45 by using them so you can save a lot of skill points if you wait.

Currently on level 36 or so. Most creatures get 3-6 attacks per round. Not sure why they don't just give them one attack with more damage? Fighting a room of 3-4 ranged creatures each attacking 5 times just takes way too long.
