Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
If you could only play one game the rest of your life...
This discussion came up at work today, and we had a lot of fun coming up with answers.
So if you could only play one game from today until you die, what would it be?
Rules:
1. It can be any game ever made or unreleased games that we know will exist at some point. So no GTA 27, etc... but say, Super Mario Galaxy or Assasin's Creed would be ok.
2. Why? Give a small description of why you chose it. What qualities does this game have that make it 'The One'. Great level design? Characters? Story?
3. No Pong.
4. No MMO's
5. If it's a multiplayer game, it is assumed you would have enough people to play against most of the time. Or bots that are good enough.
6. No Duke Nukem Forever.
Personally, I am thinking Spore would give me enough replay value to be 'It'. The ability to create and destroy worlds as I see fit? Play God? I think that would keep me amused for a long time.
Mine would probably be PSO Episode I&II. Despite only playing offline, I have upwards of 200 hours on my HUmar, and three other characters in Ult. I don't think that the game would ever get old to me. Hell, I've never even played a FO past normal.
Diablo II, with expansion. So many options for builds, it would keep me busy forever. Plus I'm still not tired of doing the same five chapters over and over after playing it for years.
orikae you have an infectious excitement for this stuff
i really believe in the expressive and transformative power of language. the proper sequence of words, placed just so, can change your entire worldview. it can change your life.

Another vote for Spore, but also Nethack, simply because it's randomly generated each time I fail and retry. Due to my crappy laptop, it was indeed the only game I was playing for a good few months in any case.
Probably Civ 3 (or possibly 4, tho I still haven't got round to playing it yet). Massive length, with a different experience each time. I've been playing it on and off for a couple of years, and the best I've ever done was winning on about the 3rd difficulty level, so if it ever gets too easy I've got plenty more difficulty levels to go through.
It's also one of the few games I actually like playing in multi-player, since with it being turn-based you can take your time compared with faster paced action games.

Hard to say without a lot of thought, but Morrowind comes to mind. I already sunk probably 200 hours into it, and that was just focusing on one player type. Plenty other things to explore that I never touched.
What about games with mod-able content? Right now there is no game that currently exists or would in future exist that I would want to be stuck with forever, but my favorite genre is probably racing sims. Most currently don't have much of a user base (except lfs and possibly rfactor - mots other racing sims use the rfactor engine) and survive in part by their continuing user support through modifications and events.

I'm going to go ahead and say no to anything heavily modded, unless you know enough to mod it yourself. Otherwise everyone could just pick Morrowind or Oblivion or something and the thread would get boring.
Pac Man's character is difficult to explain even to the Japanese -- he is an innocent character. He hasn't been educated to discern between good and evil. He acts more like a small child than a grown-up person. Think of him as a child learning in the course of his daily activities. If someone tells him guns are evil, he would be the type to rush out and eat guns. But he would most probably eat any gun, even the pistols of policemen who need them.
I would really have to say Tetris but how come no MMO's? Oh well, I guess I will have to go with the next best thing; Oblivion, and all of it's upcoming expansion packs, if they ever release more than 1 which I hope they do.... yeah.
Probably one of my own games so I could spend the rest of my years adding to it and maybe actually finishing one of them.
Otherwise, probably Starcraft. It seems to be the one game I keep going back to, and if I had to play it forever I probably would at least get decent at it.

Also, do we have access to online play?
Yes. It is assumed multiplayer games will have enough opponents for you to play as much as you want, or close to it.
Oh, okay.
Maybe Blazing Angels, or a game similar.
I love me some dogfightin'.
Though the overdose of cute might kill me.

The sound effects would drive me insane after the first couple of years.

I like how the lightsabers sound.
Trade, fight, explore.
Love landing/taking off on planets and spinning the camera around
Runner up would probably be SimCity or Rollercoaster Tycoon.
