But there's no way kojima did the interview. So who was that?
A Kojima monger. Duh.
As a mysterious trailer character he's selling Kojima (Metal Gear), and also the word "monger" also appearing in "warmongering" (what Metal Gear is all about). Think about it!
You know, as much of a bummer it may be that Hayter isn't coming back, for all logical story purposes it makes sense and I'm not all that sad.
Look at you, mentioning "logic" in a Metal Gear thread.
Logic. What is a man without logic? Nothing more than a conduit for our past emotions made manifest by our cruel and unusual world. Corporations buying logic wholesale to fuel their logic wars in the logical realm of logic. America; the 1960s. Logic is first discovered and quickly used to thwart Soviet logic encroachment in the Asian sub-continent. It was at this time that the first nano-logic particles were produced at a research facility beneath Bible-reference Island, off the coast of Strategically Important Coastal Region of the US. Only three logics were made that day, and ever since then a secret cabal of logic agents has used that logic to build an endless logical industrial complex that has torn the world apart. Logic!

Like I said, just as logical as your average season of 24.
Doesn't stop it from being awesome.

Arm cut off and now he's got a giant chunk of metal stuck in his forehead.
Not a good day for Big Boss. And if all this takes place before MG 1 and 2, he's still got being burned alive by Snake to look forward to.
Haven't finished Reveangance yet but totally worth it. Heh.
I know the bosses were redesigned when Platinum took over, but really, that was awesome.
Don't like nanomachines huh? Well too bad, we're going to take a U.S. Senator and give him nanomachine super powers so he can fist fight with a cyborg and make volcanos. Deal with it.

So from the looks of this it takes place after Zero gets the genetic data from Big Boss to make the clones.
If I had to imagine how this is set up, the missing arm is the genetic data Zero took and also serves as a perfect callback to the whole Liquid Snake/Ocelot arm thing. So Big Boss gets fucked into a coma which totally fits his bio:
Afraid of losing Big Boss, Zero planned to finish up a secret project called Les Enfants Terribles. In 1972, while Big Boss fell into a coma from being gravely wounded from a battle, Zero brought his unconscious body to a lab where his genes were extracted to make genetically enhanced soldiers. Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake were produced in this program, and were known as the "Sons of Big Boss." However, Big Boss would eventually find out about the project. This was the final straw between the two. Determined to oppose Zero and his plans, Big Boss broke away from the Patriots. He left the United States and FOXHOUND, drifting from country to country as a lone soldier.
Big Boss returned to Vietnam as a mercenary to participate in Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols (LRRP), and later served alongside SOG (Studies and Observation Group), Green Berets and the Wild Geese. Afterwards, he established his own guerrilla group known as Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers Without Borders).
Sometime in late 1972, Big Boss was hired by the Colombian Government to work with the Colombian Army. During this time, Big Boss' unit ambushed Kazuhira Miller and his guerrilla unit (Miller was working with the guerrilla as a mercenary), wiping out his unit and almost killing Miller. Eventually Miller became MSF's second in command.
So it looks like the hospital escape takes place sometime in the 70s. But the whole Ground Zeroes thing being a prequel throws that all out of whack, because everything we've learned about that seems to indicate it takes place after Peace Walker and aaaaaaaahh my brain.
I'm afraid to click that spoiler. I'm not sure I want to know. I'll just keep trying to fuck everything. -- trentsteel
ahaahaahaahaha oh my fucking christ MGS is the best game franchise ever.
It has a special place in my gaming heart for sure.

Ok, so I re-bought Portable Ops on PSN when the Vita was on its way to release and I'd sold off all my PSP stuff. I hadn't finished it yet, and expected to do so on the Vita. Now the file just squats there on my PS3 like an octopus. What are the odds that it will ever get supported at this point? If it doesn't should I just watch the cutscenes on youtube to at least get the basic story and read a wiki synopsis for the rest?
After that I have Peace Walker and a replacement copy of MGS4, for the one that was stolen. I never started Peace Walker and was on the second chapter of MGS4 when it was stolen, so I need to restart that. Which should I start playing first for proper continuity and progression PW or MGS4?
P.S. Thank you to the kind soul on here that sent me a replacement copy of MGS4 all those years ago.
Portable Ops is the black sheep of the main games. Nothing that happens in Peace Walker references Ops beyond a single line of dialogue. Campbell is introduced and
That gameplay video reminds me...didn't Kojima express interest in doing a Silent Hill game? Because I imagine something like that is probably what he had in mind.
Also, for anyone curious, I used to have a prosthetic like the one Snake has (the one in the hospital, not the robot hand he has later...though I did also have a robot hand for a while, it wasn't that advanced). Though his prosthetic looks a little more like a claw whereas mine looked more like a hook. The cable that runs from the end to your shoulder is pulled tight when you extend your arm, which opens the claw (or in my case, split the hook into two hooks) so you can grab things without needing any electronic parts or anything.
He also appears to be wearing bandages or some kind of hosing under the prosthetic, which is also accurate, since you generally wear that under the prosthetic so it will slide on/off easier without getting stuck to your skin when you sweat and such.
They've had prosthetic hands (instead of hooks/claws) that operate on the same principle for at least the last twenty years (in addition to robotic hands and cosmetic hands that don't move at all), but I have no idea when this game is actually set, and well...nanomachines. Not sure why he'd wake up already wearing it, though. The harness that goes around your shoulders isn't exactly comfortable, and would be a bit of a pain to put on and remove from a comatose patient whenever he needed to be washed. Not to mention the risk of the patient waking up and freaking the hell out to see that in place of their hand (and if his claw is solid steel like my hook was, it'd essentially be giving a trained soldier a deadly weapon).
Hey. Bandaged face dude. How's about you fucking help Big Boss up and carry him, you asshole.
Gameplay wise, I hope the scene is dripping with tension and such, because crawling around at a snail's pace doesn't make for an interesting section to play.

I don't get why there is confusion about this. This is NOT the time Zero gets Big Boss's genetic material. At the end of PW Kaz is already on the phone talking about how the clones are growing well.
Thank fucking god. With the exception of the first game, where he was actually really good, David Hayter was absolutely terrible as Snake. He always sounded so goddamn snotty it drove me nuts.

Phantom Pain refers to the phenomenon of phantom limbs, where a recently amputated individual can still feel and sense their missing appendage. Sometimes they can even feel pain in this ghost limb.
So the whole of MGS5 takes place not in Big Boss' head, but in the mind of the severed arm that was attached to Ocelot between MGS1 and 2. It has its own sentience and remembers all the genetic memories of the Boss line.
And it'll have five player co-op, with four people playing as the fingers and one person as the thumb, with extra 'command level' gameplay mechanics such as 'grip' and 'flex'.
But there's no way kojima did the interview. So who was that?

Then again, 24 is equally as logical as Metal Gear so it makes perfect sense.

Awesome trailer though.

This is Metal Gear we're talking about.
The answer to every question you could ever have about anything related to anything in the entire series is nanomachines.
It is interesting. I think we see the wound when he's on the helicopter and nothing is stuck in there.
You know Kojima has responded to that bit of criticism recently? Revengeance spoilers:

The name "Ishmael" along with the flaming whale and other crazy hallucinations. Boss is having a real crazy ass Jacob's Ladder moment, I think.
What a thrill....
also did anyone really thing the phantom pain wouldnt bg mgs 5? "v has come" lol.
the guy with the glasses, totally master miller right? also i swear i saw pyscho mantis with hair...
the whole thing makes me wonder if the game is set inside big bosses head after metal gear 2.
Then again, this is a universe where "in this arm!" is an actual thing that exists, so it's not like the reality bar is set very high. Or even at all.
so are you trying to say that he's
still in a dreeaaam

Around the same time, the show 24 was running in Japan.
and Keifer Sutherland did 24/Calorie Mate commercials.
It's all come full circle.
