I am just a lurker Scotty, but your sculptures look great, something for perspective on the size of them would be good, just from a layman's perspective.
Really good work, I couldn't do that if I had a thousand dollars and 6 months...
Thanks guys!
I always forget to place something near the piece (for scale reference) when taking a photo...this time is no different. (ugh...next time)
The spider is almost exactly 7" long from front toes to back ones in these new photos.
Just figuring out the rider now, and will be adding in grasses and junk to hide the supports and add a bit more 'real' to the piece.
Yeah, not this time, decided to go for the more natural 'Trials of Life' version here. (haha)
I may still do something more with the base, paint it black, stain it, or add more grass to hide it better...I dunno...we'll see.
Latest piece in progress...based on the 'Ghost Mantis'.
The Ghost mantis, also know as Phyllocrania paradoxa, is a species that has a beautiful leaf-like body. It’s color is usually dark brown, but can also be sand, light brown or even green. The natural habitat of the Ghost mantis is Madagascar and Africa.
Still much to do, but coming along!
Loving it so far, the little bulge between the lower leg and the belly looks a bit weird, and the lower leg looks a bit thin compared to the upper leg but loving the detail in this, and it's just overall great.
Real doggy in the middle surrounded by photos of the painted sculpt. (I wonder what he'll think of his clone?)
Just need to add the felt pads to the bottom (so he won't scuff surfaces) and he's all done and ready to be sent to the client. *whew*
I wish I had crits for you! I really don't know much about sculpting. How do people solicit you for commissions? Do people just find you online, or do you mostly get word of mouth/people you know in real life asking you for stuff?
Hehe thanks guys!
Iruka- All of the above really. Sometimes I just do a sculpt, and then somebody wants it, so they buy it. I've been fortunate lately as I've had commissions. This Slimer is just fanart, probably sell it to whoever wants.
Rez, I apply the clay thicker, and then take one of my knife tools and cut around it to make the lines, then brush it with water to blend the wrinkles. For thicker areas I roll clay (like sausages) and apply those to the surface, and then do the blending thing again with my fingers or a rounded tool. Then water to smooth it all together. :^:

Rider, planning on it...battle scene...not this time.

UPDAAAATE!
'Jumpers'
Completed piece!
Wire armatures, Aves Apoxie, Acrylic Paint, faux fur, natural elements...and a little bit o' love.
(I'm rooting for the grasshopper)
Fake edit: Just saw the "Completed piece!" bit, so I guess it's safe to assume that no, there won't be a spider rider with a grasso lasso.

Onto the next regardless!!

1.) PRAYING MANTIS
2.) Swimming in deep ocean with unknown things below me
That being said, nice work. Really nice detail and it's really creepy! :O
Things are slower going these days due to preparing to move to my new apartment...but did manage to finish this and take photos.

Sculpted the head so far. Using apoxie I have to detail it as I go as it hardens within a couple of hours.
Here's where the sculpt is presently, gonna paint it next!
I think I'll call it, 'She'll grow into them'.
(The battery is there for scale)
Being sculpted in apoxie over wire armature.
Thanks for looking! :^:
Scotty, why are you so amazing?
Seriously though, thank you for the kind words. :^:

Here's another work in progress that's been "movin' right along". Still much to do obviously, but taking shape.
...and here it is!
A gentleman commissioned me to sculpt him a seagull for his seaside-themed office.
