Leap second causes server crashes and internet hiccups

My favorite part about this is the statistic that "Since 1971, 26 leap seconds have been added to clocks." That means we're doing something stupid that has the potential to fuck up certain systems because we don't want to lose 26 seconds in 44 years? *facepalm*

While I agree that being insensitive is an issue, so is being oversensitive.

Iowa Raffle Offers Citizens Chance to Use Taser on City Official:
City hall is selling the tickets as part of a public safety fundraiser. The raffle winner will get the chance to taser or spare City Administrator Jake Anderson or Councilman Bob Lacy at the Van Meter Fire Association Street Dance July 18. "I volunteered to be tased," Anderson said. A police officer will assist with the tasing, with the proceeds going to help the department purchase a second squad car, add speed radar and possibly expand its six-member part-time and reserve force. Anderson said the idea came up during a meeting with police about funding. "The joke was sort of, yeah, let's tase the administrators. They make all the friends," Anderson said. "I was like, yeah, that's funny. Do you think you could raise some money?"

In regards to science, yes I totally get that. But with everything else, who really gives a shit? It would take 180 years to get thrown off by a single minute. After 10,800 years, we'd be off by an hour.

I'm hungover this morning, so if my brain isn't comprehending this right, just let me know.

It was implemented before computers were common, in 1972, and it's difficult to get everyone to agree to change an international standard even ignoring that some countries have laws that require it. There are arguments both ways and the international body is finally suppose to vote this year on whether to abolish them after taking 10 years. It probably wouldn't be that big of a deal if they weren't inconsistent which makes the entire thing a gigantic mess.

While you're probably right, it's the Bible thumpers (aka, fish people) that annoy me more. Most of it is because I'm tired of hearing that hogwash babble. The other is because I don't need the same horse shit shouted at me while I'm waiting in line for something that has nothing to do with their book.

I just hate anti abortion people, its not like anyone getting an abortion is fucking dancing a jig on the way to the clinic, some of them are going there for a variety of reasons and probably hate themselves enough as it is, your hateful bible thumping doesn't make them suddenly turn a corner.

    Yeah, it does.

People do it because they want to get their message out, to convince people who disagree with them, to enact social change, to be part of a group, to be a lone rebel speaking truth to power ...

They do it for a whole host of reasons.

The fact that one uses the Bible and one uses something else doesn't make the underlying motivations completely inscrutable.

You have to be Scandinavian to speak it.

I had pickled herring and haggis this past Christmas. I'd say that was a terrible mistake, but I've been able to try a myriad of new things since, because not much is worse or harder to get over than those two... until now.

I maaaaaay try it, but I would need a trashcan close in proximity (aka literally next to me) and a very strong, dark beer poured and ready to down.

Convince people that disagree with them how? By shouting stuff and looking like a lunatic? I don't think I've ever met a single person that has had their opinions changed by a group of people shouting stuff on the street. The first thing out of their mouths is usually "Get a job."

Seriously, what is it with the Scandinavian countries and doing unspeakable things to fish?

Its a way of preserving the fish by fermenting it and making it inhospitable to the bacteria that would normally cause rotting. It uses a minimal amount of salt in the brine mixture, as salt was expensive when the technique was invented.

    Seriously.

Theres really only 2 reasons they do it, imho.

Its either to try and suppress the part of them deep down that feels the way they are vocally hating against, or because they are mentally ill and receive nourishment from the negative attention.

Technically there is a third reason, growing up in it and not knowing any better, but I try not to hold it against them because most of them generally have a moment of clarity and leave once they get old enough.

For proof, just look at all the rabid anti-whatever pastors and politicians who almost universally get caught doing the thing they are hating against publically. (Usually involving other men in public bathrooms/Grindr/etc)

Considering that for most small municipalities, the answer to the question "Where do we find the money to expand our law enforcement?" Is "Camp the 20ft of highway within our city limits and give $80+ tickets to everyone going 2mph above the speed limit." This is an amazingly awesome idea.

    Stupid, but awesome.

I don't know, people can interpret it how they see fit I guess. I just wanted a place to share weird and fucked up news pieces

In 1981, a German landlord evicted a tenant without notice after the tenant spread surströmming brine in the apartment building's staircase. When the landlord was taken to court, the court ruled that the termination was justified when the landlord's party demonstrated their case by opening a can inside the courtroom. The court concluded that it "had convinced itself that the disgusting smell of the fish brine far exceeded the degree that fellow-tenants in the building could be expected to tolerate"
