From Up on Poppy Hill is an animated film directed by Gorō Miyazaki, scripted by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa, and produced by Studio Ghibli. You should watch it. I think you'd enjoy it.

Saying Miyazaki isn't enough to interest you to see it? Well here are other films related to Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli:

You haven't watched those? Well, the simple analogy is that Ghibli Films are like Disney Films. Family films aimed for children that people of all ages enjoy. If that's not enough info, I can copy and paste some information from the movie's main page about it:
FROM UP ON POPPY HILL (Kokuriko-zaka kara)
Animation, Goro Miyazaki, Japan, 2011, 91 min

GKIDS is extremely proud to present the highly anticipated new film from Studio Ghibli, creators of Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and many other animated masterpieces. Written by legendary studio founder Hayao Miyazaki and directed by Goro Miyazaki, From Up on Poppy Hill marks the first feature film collaboration between father and son. The results are stunning – a pure, sincere, nuanced and heartfelt film that signals yet another triumph for the esteemed studio.

The setting is Yokohama in 1963, and the filmmakers lovingly bring to life the bustling seaside town, with its misty harbor, sun-drenched gardens, shops and markets, and some of the most mouthwatering Japanese home-cooking set to film. The story centers on an innocent romance beginning to bud between Umi and Shun, two high school kids caught up in the changing times. Japan is picking itself up from the devastation of World War II and preparing to host the 1964 Olympics – and the mood is one of both optimism and conflict as the young generation struggles to throw off the shackles of a troubled past. While the children work together to save a dilapidated Meiji-era club house from demolition, their tentative relationship begins to blossom. But – in an unexpected twist that parallels what the country itself is facing – a buried secret from their past emerges to cast a shadow on the future and pull them apart.

More than any Studio Ghibli film, From Up on Poppy Hill embodies a specific time and place and captures the emotional landscape of its setting. The sense of yearning and new possibility is palpable (the upbeat mood is set perfectly by the period pop music), evoking both a wide-eyed hope for the future, and an aching nostalgia for a past that can never be recovered.

Star-filled voice cast includes Gillian Anderson, Sarah Bolger, Beau Bridges, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bruce Dern, Jeff Dunham, Isabelle Fuhrman, Christina Hendricks, Ron Howard, Chris Noth, Emily Osment, Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Saxton, Alex Wolff and Anton Yelchin. Multiple Academy Award® winner Gary Rydstrom directed the English language version from a script adaptation by Karey Kirkpatrick. Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy executive produced.

It's currently airing in a limited amount of theaters. I was very lucky to have seen it, as I only learned of it from an ad I saw on a random site I never visited prior. I'm pretty late on this, since it started these airings on March 16th! Since it's a Miyazaki film, I thought people would be interested in watching it. Since it has such a limited engagement, I wanted to make a thread to be sure people were aware of it. I enjoyed the movie, and doing a search, others in this forum, others have as well.

Some kinda socially awkward bits in it, but a much better work than Goro's previous Legend of Earthsea.

Again, it's only showing in very few theaters. Here is the current information on showings.

Why don't these things get a wider release, especially with the cast they always get.

Going in, I thought it was going to be subtitled since it was such a small release. I was surprised when everyone spoke English, and pleasantly surprised that the voice acting was good. I have no idea who GKIDS is, but I didn't know this wasn't a Disney localization until I was making this thread. They did a fine job.

I'll admit I groaned a bit when I saw Jeff Dunham in the voice cast. Doubt this is coming my way anyways.

I can say without a doubt this is a great movie just like Secret World of Arriety was
The only thing I feel worried about is that there won't be anymore imaginative fantasy worlds that Ghibli used to be famous for

This is playing near me on April 26. What the hell I'll go see it, can't be any worse than Earthsea.

Oh yeah this movie cost 20 mil to make and has already made 60 back so the US box office will just be extra frosting on the cake.

In the same way that Robin Williams named his daughter Zelda after a Japanese game he liked, Link, did Hayao Miyazaki name his son Goro after an American game he liked? Mortal Kombat?

I haven't actually seen a single Ghibli movie dubbed in English yet.

I've seen them with English subs, and Cantonese dubs, but not English dubs.

Hosoda Mamoru's Wolf Children Ame and Yuki is apparently pretty excellent, too, and came out around the same time as Poppy Hill. I've been meaning to see it because The Girl Who Leaped Through Time and Summer Wars were both excellent films.

It's a great movie. I'd have definately made a thread on that one too if it had a US release. But I saw it at a film festival.
