Does the new SE get its own monkey den?

Since they're different forums now, or do we share this one, because SE mark 2 is going to have some unique problems (being all flaming homosexuals and all)

It would be nice if when the community page is finalized it doesn't use buttons since you can't open their links in tabs.

What? Why is this even still an open thread? There's no way the chat forums need a seperate monkey den is there?

Maybe it's own H/A forum though, now there's an idea...

I agree it doesn't need a seperate monkey den, but I also think it doesn't need it's own H&A forum either.

Help and Advice by defination is going to be on topic, whereas chat is not.
People who want help and advice are probably going to be deterred if the topics cannot stay on topic.

It was kind of sort of a joke. Like pre-empting the deluge of people requesting rooms for the Chat Forum that already exist over here.

Although off-topic H/A would be amusing. There's plenty of opportunity to be had from mocking peoples afflictions that we are naturally prevented from indulging in at present. But it would still be pointless to make an new room for it - people can just be emo in SE+Helter whatsit if they want abused.

It has it's own H/A. It's called Helter Skelter, people post with their problems, and then they get shit kicked out of them by the rest of the pack. You know, as nature intended.

Is that why you stoped modding H/A? Because you couldn't resolve the issue of your role conflicting with nature? Thats deep, man.

Actually, it had more to do with turning down a fat sack of cash money conflicting with my nature, but....

I mean, it was for the good of the forum.

Anyway, people know what they're getting when they post problems in H/A, and they know what they're getting when they post problems in the chat forum. If they somehow miss the different nature of the two forums, there are social mechanisms in place to discourage a repetition of the mistake. It's quite beautiful, when you think about it.

Yes, we all know about those social mechanisms.

As a matter of hypothetical speculation - now that there is a separate chat forum, do you think somewhere down this long and winding road we will find it necessary, or perhaps simply desirable, to have more than one 'room' within that forum?

Excuse me if this makes little sense. It might be the paint-fumes talking.

Across the Divide has Helter Skelter and the Chatlog. The chat forum's been like that for how long now? I don't see it really changing. There's not much point in it, after all--off-topic is off-topic. The only purpose I can see in further compartmentalization would be for, say, an 18+ chat section, or a NSFW chat section, but I really don't see that happening on a permanent basis.

That having been said, I don't see it as inconceivable that at some point there might be an SD weekend or something like that. You know, since the admins are all crazy. Up in here, even.

Of course, upon rereading the question, I doubt it'll ever be necessary or desirable.

    Also, I'm not a chat-mod.

Yeah, but you're the only person on the whole damn forum who's talking right now.

I can't really see much point in it either - I mean, all you could really do in a chat forum would be to create sub-forums for different topics of discussion, but as it is an anything goes, off topic friendly catch-all that would kind of be contrary to what the chat forum essentially stands for.

It might be good to have temporary sub-forums for forum/real life events such as get-togethers or drawing competitions or whatever as they would then have their own space and not be confined to one hideously long thread but beyond that I can't think of anything worth a seperate and permanent sub-forum right now.

However, as it has become a seperate entity I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually started to develop semi-independently from these boards if it survives for long enough.

It's like in Altered Carbon...near the end...but to elaborate on that analogy would cause me to spoil the book and as I don't know if you've read it yet I'll just leave it at that.

I didnt want to make a new thread, but why is it called the Chat-Forums? If one is called On-Topic, shouldnt the other, which is clearly not On-Topic, be called Off-Topic, much like you point out above? Its not a big deal, just something I found odd that you called the SE section Chat-Forum when Off-Topic seems more descriptive. Theres no real chatting going on from what I can tell, more of general off topic posts and off topic off topic replies.

Also, theres a button in the On-Topic that looks like Catsby or something and an arrow. It takes you to Chat-Forums. Why doesnt Chat-Forums have a button like that to take us back to On-topic? Is it coming or was it something overlooked?

EE is a serious, on topic chat.

SE/HS is a whimsical fairy land in which your post can go up, down, left, right, or Tuesday.

Well, it's not necessarily off-topic. It's just that derails are to be expected, and that on-topic discussion is not a matter of rules. Specifically, they are devoted to chat, pure and simple.

In the on-topic forums, there's not a real overarching theme because all the forums are devoted to different on-topic things. The only thing in common is that you may not be off-topic. EE is for debate and news; you're not allowed to start a thread about your day there. H/A is for help and advice; you're not allowed to tell everyone about the pen being mightier in there. G&T is for games and tech; no whinging about your bald tires in there. Etc, ad infinitum.

Chat-side, you can start threads about any of those things, because the forum itself has no topic. But as far as discussion goes, there's no guarantee that it will deviate from its topic. People might join in, and the thread might stay more-or-less on-topic until it dies. You might also wind up with posts about someone's day in your bald-tire thread, or posts about Celebrity Jeopardy in your emo thread, but....

Basically, you can't really be off-topic when your topic is off-topic chat.

It is possible to keep a thread in Jolly Jubalee forum from being derailed and keep it on topic. You just need to babysit you thread, and make relevant posts to your topic.

This is such a brilliant idea. I'll get right on it. Next up I'll post the password my account! And after that, the forum source code. I mean, it's not like doing that would destroy the forum in any way. No sir.

Golly, I can't imagine anything bad would happen if we showed a postcount. Nothing like this pristine post from another board:
I don't have anything to add to this conversation. Just increasing my postcount :D

And the fact that postcounts add a whole lot to the forum experience. I mean they show numbers, and some people have bigger numbers than others. It's kinda like when you get off work and your boss shows you his paycheck and then you look at yours and his is a whole lot bigger, or when you go into the bathroom and the guy next to you has a huge cock and he's standing 3 feet from the urinal. Yep, a whole new awesome dimension will be added to the forum.

We use postcounts from time to time as jokes or incentives or rewards or whatever. We're never going to bring them back permanently. Also, as this thread is no longer on topic and the topic is duly noted...I'm gonna lock it.
