I hate Lamb of God (sorry cain) and Pantera bugs me

Ignore all recommendations by anyone who says you should listen to Trivium, Killswitch, Slipknot, or Trivium

and yes if i were to listen to anyone's opinion on metal it would be fallout

slipknot used to be a guilty pleasure of mine but killswitch blows so hard (if you really want to listen to metalcore there is so much better) and trivium doubly sucks

oh also listen to benighted, everyone. so good.

Why do people like Trivium? Seriously. The worst attempt at a live act I have ever witnessed.

I've never seen them live, but I like their albums because they're very heavy (well, at least for the most part) but still have strong melodies and the vocalist can actually sing as opposed to using the Cookie Monster vocals all of the time. I think that vocal style has its place too, but I tend to get bored when it's the only one that's used on an entire album.

At this point, I probably sound like a Pantera fanboy, but are there any other bands out there that kind of sound the same? The chunky slide guitar and Phil Anselmo's gritty type of voice?

Listen to the other bands that he sings in, the best 2 being Down and Superjoint Ritual

Check out Damage Plan, there pantera with a new singer thats sound simlar to the old one.
Lamb of God is hands down my favorite band. There cd ashes of the wake as only left my car's cd to be put on my computer.

To the op check out every band every one as mentioned good or bad becuase no matter how much a band may suck to one person someone else likes it.

if i limed things i'd lime this and glue gold trim and little bits of macaroni to it

extreme vocals aren't necessarily monotonous, a skilled vocalist can do plenty with them

If you want some seriously unpleasant (but good!) vocals check out Anaal Nathrakh (especially the earlier stuff before they incorporated occasional clean vox) and Silencer.

I'll take bad "bad singing" over bad "good singing" any day.

The guy from Trivium can't sing at all. On stage eh sounds like a cat being crushed under a jackhammer. I'd put money on an autotune being used in the studio.

Listen to Amorphis - Elegy if you want a good mix of singing and growling vocals, with a good dose of awesome.

Trivium is just very accessible to new metal-heads. ChugChug riffs, harmonized interludes, fast solos, dirty vox (can't speak on the new album, haven't heard it, won't even go near it), I mean it makes sense why people get into them. But after you get into metal and your ears start to open up, you'll hear how bland, repitive and boring they are. You'll seek better music.

Taco Bell does win the franchise war according to the tome of knowledge that is Demolition Man. However, I've watched Demolition Man more then a few times and never once did I see WoW. In conclusion Taco Bell has more lasting power then WoW.

For thrash metal - Metallica (Ride the lightning, Master of the puppets), Trivium, (new metallica.) I guess Megadeth if you wanna be a dick, Celtic Frost, Slayer. (reign in blood)

Classic shit - Iron Maiden, Death, Venom, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Mercyfal fate.

Black metal/viking influence - Enslaved, Emperor (I'd take any day of mayhem) Bathory, Gorgoroth. Dimmu Borgir get the job done as well. Dismember.

Prog Metal - Mastadon (Leviathon and Blood mountain are the best albums of all time.) Boris.

Post Metal - Isis, Pelican, Neurosis, Junius.

Stoner metal (slow drony, sludgy goodness) Sleep, Kyuss, Melvins. Electric wizard. (self proclaimed "loudest band on earth")

Doom metal - Sunn, Earth, Obsessed.

Riffage and shit - 3 inches of blood (first two albums, not the new one) early man, fucking champs, ASG, Darkest hour. Old CKY.

Retro metal- High on Fire, The Sword,

Christian metal - Stryper, wicked riffage, funny lyrics.

    Epic - Rhapsody, heavenly, Stratovarius.

Like I said, I'm not a metalhead, but I've been listening *to* metal for over fifteen years and I still like Trivium. They, God Forbid, and In Flames are actually what got me interested in the style again, since I'm generally more into industrial. That's why there's a big gap in the metal bands I like - either they're pretty old (My Dying Bride), or not (the aforementioned).

I'm definitely interested in checking out some of the bands people have mentioned in this thread (particularly Lamb of God, since everyone seems to like them), but that's not going to *stop* me from liking Trivium. Like I said, they have catchy songs that still tend to be very heavy. I also respect that their lyrics tend to cover challenging territory. If I were interested in hearing the most angry, noisy music I could get my hands on, it wouldn't be metal at all, it would be e.g. Winterkalte.

Just like with everything here (e.g. scotch, beer, books, etc), when a neophyte asks for advice on getting into something, you're always going to have your snobs come in and shit all over everyone's recommendations. Don't let it get to you. Metal snobs are just as bad as any other kind.

One of my favorite genres is Doom Metal, so I'll throw out a few more suggestions:

    Novembers Doom - The Knowing
Anathema - The Silent Enigma, Eternity, Alternative 4, Judgment (their sound gets softer as they go, but more refined IMO)
My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River
October Tide - Rain Without End

Yes, stoner metal's where it's at, and post metal and...

Here's my (almost) short list of stuff to listen to:

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (their best work)
    Scissorfight - self-titled
    Kyuss/slo burn/Unida - Anything really
The Sword - Age of Winters (surprisingly good metal, catchy)
    Acid King - Busse Woods
Los Natas (a bargain bin Kyuss!)
    Lowrider (Yet Another Kyuss Soundalike)
Sleep (so heavy...), and now reincarnated into Om, drone-y metal good stuff
Pelican - Australasia, I think this is their best work, not caring for their latest album
Sons of Otis - everything but X, got me into stoner
Church of Misery - I've only got the early stuff, and it's glorious
    Gammera
Moonsorrow - Viking metal goodness, can't stand demon burger and others, just don't click with me.
    Karma to Burn
men of porn - yes, yes they are
Ufomammut - ufo metal! They've got a theramin and everything!

    I loves the metal.

I'm a fan of Both Trivium and Killswitch Engage I think they both are fairly good. Don't see the desire to go against someones suggestion just beacuse you don't personally like the band the people reading this may look 'em up and love em. Let them try the suggestions for themselves.

For all your Black Metal needs I recommend early Mayhem and particularly the 'Dawn of the black hearts' bootleg. For stoner: Sleep. For prolonged stoner: Sleeps 'Dopesmoker'. For the ultimate rock: Guitar Wolf.

Sleep is average stoner rock, nothing special.
For rock and roll rooted stoner rock, big Black Sabbath and Deep Purple influences, go to the originator: Kyuss. The greatest stoner rock band of all time.

For slow, sludgy, super heavy stoner rock, hit up Electric Wizard. They're like Black Sabbath on ketamine.

For fast, rude riffs, hit up one of the first three Atomic Bitchwax albums (I, II and Spit Blood). Everything since has been sort of like a weak Queens of the Stone Age rip off.

Orange Goblin is really good, like if Fu Manchu never started to suck. Unida is good, as they're pretty much Kyuss lite.

Monster Magnet is shit, but Spine of God and Dopes to Infinity are decent. Fu Manchu's really early work is good, but they suck really hard now too. The Action Is Go however, is a great album. Really fast, rock inspired stoner rock. Clutch is either awesome or terrible, depending on how much value you place in wit and how much you place on vocal strength. They have the former but not the latter.

None of these bands have much to do with the music on Metalocalypse, but stoner rock is pretty worth checking into if you like heavy music in general.

I just couldn't sit and let Stryper be all that there is to represent Christian metal. Hair metal is just too fruity. Slechtvalk, Antestor, Sympathy, Tourniquet, Paramaecium, Holy Blood (Black, black, death, thrash, doom, folk, respectively) All very awesome bands.

Also, I just have to again mention Necrophagist. Very technical. Incredible.

I agree with anyone saying Megadeth, I saw them 2 nights ago and they completely stole the show and they were opening for Black Sabbath(Heaven and Hell Tour). Sabbath totally sucked and alot of people were leaving a half hour to an hour into their set. I'd suggest staying away from their new stuff unless you like everything that sounds the same and is slow tempo.

As for other bands that I enjoy:
    Killswitch Engage
    Children of Bodom
    As I Lay Dying
    Dragonforce
Dream Evil - these guys are alot like Iron Maiden I find, their albums are stories put into music which is awesome
    Iron Maiden
    Primal Fear
    Monster Magnet
    Megadeth
    Shadows Fall

Is "I'd suggest staying away from their new stuff unless you like everything that sounds the same and is slow tempo." about Megadeth or Black Sabbath? I haven't heard any new Sabbath stuff and Megadeth, well, certainly not up to the quality they used to be but I think "The System Has Failed" was still a big step in the right direction from "The World Needs a Hero".

It's about Sabbath, all their new stuff they played Wednesday night all sounded the same and starts really slow, almost every song has a solo in it but after a while the solos end up beginning to sound the same.
The new Megadeth stuff sounds really good. They played Washington is Next and I enjoyed it alot.

The Sabbath stuff you heard was when Dio was fronting the band. They had like 2 new songs they played on tour. Thats Sabbaths style though, its very slow and broody. Megadeth is wicked and thats all you need to know....except maybe 'risk', even though it has its moments of guilty pleasures.
