Wasn't expecting them to make specific characters out of the Diablo classes. But that just means we can get more heroes from Diablo, just with different specs.

    Yeah, they can.

It also gives them the ability to make classes from all 3 Diablo games. I'd love to see a return of the Amazon from D2. She's one of my favorites in the series. Also, it would be nice to see the D3 monk with some of his signature moves, such as Seven Sided Strike and the Wave of Light move that summons a giant church bell.

I'd also like to see some of the D3 Wizard's signature skills, such as Disintegrate and the Time Slow bubble. Also, they could put Hydra on her, or on a D1 or D2 sorc.

    18) Abathur is a very hard ranged specialist. He's one of the most unique units in the game in that he doesn't directly engage in combat. Instead, he sits in the back of the map and acts through others, adding abilities to them. He can also place toxic nests to defend strategic locations on the map.

The lore: In StarCraft II, Abathur engineers the evolution of the Zerg swarm to aid Kerrigan's efforts to take over the universe.

Sounds like a playstyle I'll like.

If you haven't watched their original features panel from Blizzcon, you need to. They do a fantastic job of showcasing Abathur's abilities in a short 2 or 3 minute clip.

Yeah, abathur looks like a really weird and interesting design.

Also helps that he is an fairly amusing character.

On the topic of Heroes, they also said during one of the interviews at Blizzcon that they are currently prototyping (is that the right word) a design for the Lost Vikings. They said the challenge here is how to work all 3 of the Vikings into a single character. I imagine that this character will end up being something like the Pandaren Monk in original DotA when he splits into his 3 forms. Just a guess.

Other heroes that we are very likely to see, even if they haven't been officially announced yet. This is my own list, with a bit of skill speculation thrown in.
Jaina - Mage character with frost magic. Probably will be able to root or incapacitate people. Other possible spells include Polymorph and Iceblock.
Thrall - Shaman character. Probably either support or medium/short range DPS. Will likely have totems, lightning spells, and a hammer.
Zeratul - Stealth/Rogue character. Will probably have the ability to do blinks or blink-strikes and turn invisible.
Blackthorne Guy - From Blizzard's SNES platformer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackthorne

Right now, the roster is pretty light on support characters, so I expect that we will see a few more of those announced in the weeks and months ahead.

Jaina and Thrall have already been shown in various vids from blizzcon, though not officially announced.

Magni, Zeratul, Anu'berak, and a Zerg. I can't remember the Zerg's name off the top of my head, but he was one of the side-characters in Heart of the Swarm.

If anything I'd be pissed off about Bikini Kerrigan, as if the Zerg high heels weren't ridiculous enough. We get it, Blizzard, all the women in your video games have fine tits, shapely legs, and an ass for the ages. You don't need to dress them up in bikinis and skintight suits just in case we forget they're all smoking hot.

This game needs to have all three of the Vikings from the Lost Vikings as a singular "character." Do that and I'm fucking sold.
    EDIT: Also Blackthorne.

Fanboying for dead IPs aside, this kinda sounds like a MOBA with all the annoying, outdated, stupid shit stripped out and replaced with pedal to the medal facefuckery and asskicking with lulzy humor sprinkles. I'm pretty ok with this.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Ragnaros make an appearance, including skills like summoning spawns, meteors and maybe a PBAoE or two.

Regarding Thrall, I could see them releasing Shaman Thrall and Warchief Thrall, as much as that sort of breaks immersion with two Thralls on the battlefield. Then again, this whole game is around breaking immersion, so who knows?

Also, standby for inevitable Leeroy Jenkins "hero".

Am I the only one who doesn't really care for Elite Tauren Chieftains? The band, the appearances in WoW, the yearly BlizzCon leveling up, and now a character in a Blizzard MOBA. I like (nerd)rock as much as the next guy, but I was never a fan of their music, either.

I'm a little curious on how the shared exp will work. In other Mobas, the power spike in leveling up or completing an item is the best time to strike. So now you run the risk of having the case where instead of having a team that has levels 5-5-5-4-4 against a team that has levels 4-4-4-5-5, shared experience will widen the power spike gap, and you'll have a team of all 5's fighting a team of all 4s. They could address this though if different heroes need different amounts of exp to level up.

Also, if you think this game looks good, I recommend you check out Awesomenauts. Albino Bunny helped get me in to it, and it's super fun. The gameplay is a bit more like a 2d platformer with some simple moba mechanics. Games are quick, and characters are easy to understand. It's pretty cheap on Steam, give it a shot while you wait for HotS.

The game's in fucking alpha because it's been remade like five times. You can tell just by looking at the gameplay videos and see that UI is almost entirely utilitarian and devoid of art assets.

We're probably not going to see beta until summer at the earliest.

Parts of this make me excited and parts don't. More on the plus side though.

    Excited about:

    - Variety of new maps with different objectives, genre needs that kind of freshness
    - Changes that make it more inviting to play: teams leveling together, no last hitting, no unwieldy beast of an item shop, shorter games
    - Blizzard characters, Blizzard polish

    Not so sure about:
    - Changes to make it more inviting to play as stated above, there's a tricky balancing act involved in most of those and the proof will just have to be in the pudding.
    - Silly aesthetics: rainbow pony mount? Murloc diablo? Terran medic paladin? I dunno. I appreciate that a game with a mash up of characters like this needs to not take itself too seriously, but some of this stuff is just too randomly over the top for my taste. And...Elite Tauren Chieftain is a hero? :/ When it gets this silly I start to feel like this game will be more Blizzard Mario Party than Blizzard Dota.
    - Trying to think of a third minus point because symmetry. Actually that's all I've got so on balance, really looking forward to seeing more of it. If its fun to play, and has decent depth too it, aesthetics won't matter too much.

Titan was basically sent back to the drawing board, and was originally going to be an MMO. We have no idea what it is now, but seeing as how most of its dev team has been moved to WoW, we won't be seeing it for a while (if ever).

Heroes of the Storm was originally just a mod to show off the Starcraft 2 Arcade, but someone at Activision heard that Blizzard was about to give away a MOBA without monetizing the fuck out of it and said "No, that will not do." So now it's a full title.

I was at blizcon and I played 4 matches there. I would have played more but the line was horrendous. I never saw it when it wasn't wrapped all the way around the playing area. Fortunately, there was a separate line for solo players like me so I often able to skip ahead and get some games in while bigger groups waited. It seemed to be the most popular game at blizzard and some of my friends expressed enjoyment over how much fun it was.

    Game 1
    Hero: Goblin Tinker guy
    Map: Cursed Hollow

This was a 5v5 map with 3 lanes. In the southwest and northeast, a tribute would spawn occasionally. If you collected 3 of these tributes, the opposing towers would deactivate for a good 30-45 seconds and the enemy minions would be set to 1 hp. The tributes seemed random for the first one and then alternated sides. Before the tribute would spawn, there was a voice over and plenty of warning as to where it would be and that seemed to be the time for teamfights. There were a few mercany camps that spawned a wave of mercenaries but they weren't fought over and ignored most of the time as we were all still figuring out what to do.

I took the Goblin Tinker guy (forget his name) and he seemed to be a siege focused hero. He had turrets, a charged skillshot with very long range and a bomb that would explode and aoe stun after 4 seconds. He seemed like he'd be perfect for pushing a lane but he really didn't do that much in team fights. He can wipe an entire wave from complete safety but his bomb and charged shot aren't as useful in a straight 5v5 teamfight. I didn't look too closely at the options for his ult and I may have made a mistake with the one I chose. It gave him bonus health and a major damage bonus vs minions and turrets but it didn't actually make him better in teamfights which was what we needed.

The game went alright at the start, I was in a solo lane and did alright against the enemy and I've forgotten who I was facing to be honest as the roaming started very early. Going from the middle to the bot lane seems to take about as much time as it does on Twisted Treeline in LoL to give an example. Ganks weren't really that much of a problem though since the enemy can't follow you behind your tower while your gate is still up. There was also a moonwell that restored health and mana but had a 100 seconds cooldown. The enemy had more success at top and mid and managed to activate the first curse and pushed down our towers. We almost held them off at the core but they won pretty much every straight teamfight and I couldn't really do very much to stop them.

    Game 2
    Hero: Raynor
    Map: Cursed Hollow

Same map, different hero. Raynor felt much more standard than the goblin tinker did. He had a knockback skill shot, an attack speed buff that also effected allies and a passive that healed him when he was below 30%. All in all, he felt like an ultra-safe carry. Other heroes (like Illidian and Ellite Tarren Cheifian) could jump on me and I would survive by knocking them away and popping my AS buff. I ended up facing a less experienced Raynor in the midlane and destroyed him. Once I killed him or sent him back for healing, I would roam top or bottom and usually end up killing or putting pressure on a tower there. I couldn't find out how to attack move so there was some frantic clicking but this game went alot better. We controlled the tributes and there was a Nova on our team knew what she was doing and directed us towards objectives constantly.

Raynor's ultimate deserves mention because it's amazing looking. He summons a battlecruiser above so you can see the shadow of it on the ground and it slowly moves forward while firing. I feel I'm not doing justice to it but it looks and sounds awesome. The game in general looks and feels amazing with great animations.

    Game 3
    Hero: Daemon Hunter
    Map: Haunted Mines

The Haunted mines was a 2 lane map with an extra dungeon area that opened up occassionally. The dungeon had groups of very weak mobs that dropped skulls and a strong baron type mob that dropped a bunch of skulls. After a few minutes, an add would spawn for your side and start pushing towards their base with its strength equal to the number of skulls you farmed. I'm not 100% sure of the best strategy here as farming up all the skulls would take 1-2 minutes and it seems like an opposing team could capitalize on that and take objectives. Maybe you send 1-2 guys down there and push with the rest but I don't see how you can beat the guy at the end without your full team.

The Daemon hunter was the most OP hero I played. She dealt amazing damage with a homing skillshot, a frontal cone attack, a dash and an line AOE stun for her ultimate. I feared no one on the enemy team and could kill them at will if my ultimate was up. The dash kept me safe from even the most persistent ganks and we had a Abathur on overwatch as well. One of her talents gave her lifesteal so I was never less than full health and I was careful to avoid getting focused in teamfights. My team actually won 4v5 at the end as I was farming up skulls in the dungeon while they made a final push to end the game.

    Game 4
    Hero: Malfurion
    Map: Haunted Mines

I decided to try a support hero for my last game and it was a horrible disaster. Had a little kid on my team who couldn't figure out his controls or something as he sat in the starting area the whole game. The rest of my team would charge straight into towers or sit off the side not attacking anything or doing anything. I lacked any kind of damage of my own and eventually had to go defend bottom as everything else decided to go top. Malfurion's abilities seemed useful but he didn't have any real way to deal damage which was unfortunite. He had a heal with a HoT effect that seemed to heal for about 1/3 of an allies' life, a nuke ability that did minor damage but had a low CD, an AoE root that I eventually talented to summon adds when cast and a innervate ability that restored an allies' mana. His ult was an aoe silience that I got to use once or twice because we lost so quickly. None of my allies did anything but run forward an die and the game was basically over after the first grave golem summon.

Overall thoughts: This is not DoTA or LoL. The game was more about pushing, roaming and controlling objectives. People were constantly moving around, swaping lanes, fighting over observation towers, trying to get ganks or running towards objectives. The smallish size of the map coupled with the natural mobility of heroes made it a very quick paced game. I liked the removal of gold and shops though I did feel that the talents could use some balancing. Often there was one choice (like attack damage for the Daemon Hunter) that I felt was much much better than any other talents offered. I also worry about Blizzard's ability to balance things properly with so many crazy heroes on widely different maps. The visuals and sound were great though and I may check HotS out again when it's playable.

I don't think Activision's suits had much to do with the change that happened to Blizzard DotA / Blizzard All-Stars. Blizzard is a company know for endlessly obsessing over a product. They put more polish and focus testing on all their releases than any other company except for maybe Valve.

Heroes of the Storm, by all indications, especially considering what was said during multiple panels and interviews at Blizzcon, is a labor of love that they are doing. Blizzard actually put "Team 1" on the development of the game. "Team 1" is their RTS team. It is the team that made Warcraft and Starcraft. This isn't a team of interns, or some random group of guys working on this. This is their A Team. These are the guys who put Blizzard on the map.

Blizzard realized that one or two maps was not good enough. Making Blizzard All-Stars as a mod for SC2 was not good enough. Just like every other product they have ever released, they are now endlessly obsessing over HotS and the reason it is now a full game of it's own is because a stand alone map was not good enough for them.

I for one am thrilled. I was ready to be done with MOBAs, with all the biggest names currently available basically just being variations on the same thing. This looks to be breathing fresh ideas and new life into a genre that quickly grew stale.

Also if you are interested in DoTA2 or just watching it and learning about it his casts and vods are excellent. He does a great job of commenting and explaining things for everyone and has really good voice over quality. Plus his new player guides are fantastic.
