There was an actual reason why they didn't pursue Japan this generation. Sony not pursuing Japan in any generation would not make sense unless they suddenly tank bad in that region, which there have been no indications of happening any time soon to say the least.
If you wanna kill NPCs in Dark Souls, you kill those NPCs. Have your own experience with the game! And they all come back in NG+
I don't think it's even possible to block your progress, and you can still get some darn good weapons without any of them. (Maybe buy important stuff from the blacksmiths first, though).
My favorite is watching speed runs of Dark Souls. It's faster to kill Gwynevere, but it's actually slower to kill the Estus flask guy at the beginning.

Did you find the elevator? It's basically there
edit: Valley of Drakes is the back door. You go through that to get to Darkroot Basin. You can also get to Firelink Shrine without going through the Valley of Drakes

There is not a back door to dark root. The back door is up the water wheel
