RT-N56U and DD-WRT/Tomato

Does anyone have experience putting either of the two popular custom firmwares on an Asus RT-N56U? I know that for DD-WRT, the 56 isn't listed, but all of its brethren are; so I'm assuming it's safe to load.

Also, does either firmware solve the "5G issue" that seemed to be prevalent with these routers? (5G networking was spotty and/or had horrible range and connection problems)
