Helps that you don't run into arbitrary image limits. I actually have a carbonmade site for two of my paid projects, and it's got some pretty hefty picture restrictions. Something tells me it isn't the best bet for showcasing the process behind a design.

Someone tell me about art blogs. I am basically non-active on social media and I feel like I want to get my work in front of more eyes. Should I just make a tumblr account? Honestly I hardly even understand how tumblr works.

I have an ancient and neglected DeviantArt account but it never got much traffic and DA seems like a bit of a dinosaur these days.

Don't look at me, the only things on my tumblr that ever get reblogged are when I post tutorial stuff, and only then because Iruka reblogs them first.

But then, I don't spend a lot of time drawing Disney princesses as legumes or whatever the hell kinda thing that makes for internet-popularity fodder.

yeah, you can practically automate Tumblr and Wordpress to be great repositories for online work.

Some tips on this that I got from Irene Gallo at Spectrum last year in her panel on working with Art Directors and other people who need to see your portfolio:

*Keep your URL super-easy and make sure your contact page is current and reflects that your tumblr/wordpress/whatever is regularly updated, even if only weekly or what have you, it should not look like you visited once and dumped everything and then haven't been back.

*Resist the temptation for super fancy slideshows and frontpages, too slow and too boring and too not-cool-art-stuff

*Portfolio page should v-scroll and ideally be clickable so that an AD/etc can scan through all your stuff at a clip and enlarge stuff that looks interesting and view in more detail

*If you use thumbnails/partial images don't be cute and make them postage stamp sized without a lot of visual info

There was more stuff but that's the gist of it

There are TONS of free wordpress or tumblr layouts that you can basically just use for nothin' but art and they are great for getting a lot of work out there in front of total randos. Share rate is high; I don't know if it converts to sales necessarily but it's a good way to find unusual cool connections too

I'm only speaking from my experience, but if you want to get an obscene number of likes and reblogs on a single post that no other post of yours will ever be able to match up to, you should consider creating a cute and sad Halloween illustration.

An easier way is to just post your titties

I should probably make a tumblr for my logo-a-day thing. So far it didn't end up quite one per day as I was away from my PC the other day, but hey! I still had an idea that I used.

    Speaking of happy though.

For tumblr, I think being consistent and actually updating makes a big difference. I think both tumblr and instagram are better if you can learn to use them casually, which means sketching more regularly and not being afraid to post doodles. In that way, you then have to decide what your tumblr is for. I don't use mine as a portfolio site, that's what lauramakesart.com is for. But I've kept my urls as consistent as I can (I try to take that name in some variation everywhere).

Most of the popular artists I see on my dash art updating at least once a week. Tumblr has a slow rolling quality to it that DA and the other sites don't really have, It doesn't need to be a new post, it just needs to be reblogged by the right person to a targeted fanbase. My dags reblog pretty well, people like dogs, and my post with the most notes is a skull. The subsequent next popular posts are pokemon, so the fan art thing does ring true. But you need to hack at tumblr for a little while, generally.

You can automatically post to tumblr from instagram, too, which is basically Easy Mode for getting sketches out there

I also get stupid amounts of love for half finished stuff on instagram, the #wip hashtag is strong for that

The widening gap between my hips and my pants seems to be a sign that I'm losing weight, which is disturbing since I'm already a lanky skeleton dude. I haven't been exercising since my running pal got a girlfriend who he runs with now, so that might be why? It's odd though, I seem to recall that I could wear these pants pretty well before I began exercising, but nope, not anymore.

How much are you eating m3nace? Not that your weight loss is indicative of a problem, but you may want to ask a doctor what a good diet and weight would be for you.

  • m3nacem3nace Registered User regular
Yeah probs, but I think I'm eating enough. I was a vegetarian before I stopped exercising, maybe I should go back to that.

Hrm, I've eaten nothing but terrible things in excessive quantity for the last 2 days and this has translated into me losing 3 pounds.

This doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense, but I guess I'll keep pushing my luck until my body stops disobeying some basic ideas about how matter works <eats whole pizza>

Weight loss on a day to day basis is a black magic spun by the devil himself. Ate an entire pizza and washed it down with a carton of ice cream? Down two pounds. Studiously obeyed a healthy diet and exercise regiment for a month? Up three!

I'm trying to cut back on pizza from once a week to once a month. If I lose any weight its probably happiness leaving my body.

I am so hung over from last weekend. Way too much scotch and tacos.

    Detox July here I come

Eat healthier if you'd like, but "detoxing" is not really a thing.

  • EncEnc A Fool with Compassion Pronouns: He, Him, HisRegistered User regular
Yeah, what I mean by detox is "not eat pizza/tacos/burgers or drink excessive quantities of scotch and stout for the next few weeks or until I don't feel like a horrible waste of flesh, whichever comes first."

Only thing toxic in my body is my mental desire to drink and stuff my face on holidays!

Also, I'm turning 30 this month and I feel I aught to reach that milestone as somewhere better than "hungover and 30 pounds overweight." Not that I have enough time to change that all the way but I can at least get back into making meaningful steps in exercising daily again.

Buy a corvette and have sex with a 20 year old. Do what anyone else does during their midlife crisis.

Better watch out at 60, Enc. Could have a time-delay Zepherin with murder on his mind around then.

Edit: Though the corvette and sex with a 20 year old is solid advice for feeling young again, juuuust before feeling older and worse than ever
