I spent some Fate on the Empress' Shadow today. I'm not into the story proper yet but I have already done a couple of terms at Sinning Jenny's Finishing School and it's kind of a delightful mechanic, seems to yield pretty OK rewards (chance at a big Connected boost, some Scintillack, some An Identity Uncovereds), and apparently you can keep doing it after finishing the actual story. I dig.
I started Sunless Sea yesterday. I've explored about 80% of the map, its surprisingly easy to not get killed by things it seems. I didn't upgrade my ship at all but I managed to get pretty much everywhere in one piece. I was able to make a fat stack from salt lions cargo and I managed a townhouse and a child.
Story wise though I accomplished pretty much nothing. The requirements to get anything done seem really high. Making money seems very difficult once the salt cargo stops. Buying and selling goods at various ports looks like a complete waste of time, a few echoes profit at best.
The one thing I didn't manage to find was (of course) Polythreme, also the target of my first admiralty commission and required for a couple of other early starter quests.
In fact, I died sailing east of Khan's Shadow into one of 2 unexplored segments looking for it when my terror hit 100 and I died instantly to a crew mutiny. I'd just finished exploring the entire southern half of the map and got greedy instead of heading straight back to London from Khan's Heart.
Do I need to keep generating children or did producing a Scion mean I'll always have a successor as long as I create a will?
I think my main priority is to get the 4000 echo ship and find someway to leave it to my kids because I'm already super bored of the starting ships movement speed.

You don't need to keep having kids as long as you keep leaving a will. HOWEVER, some game events - particularly Salt's Curse - might cause you to lose the "Scion" quality, which is the quality that having a child granted you in the first place that enabled you to write the will and leave two inheritances. So keep an eye out on Scion and if something happens to remove it, work to get it back before dying/retiring.
Other stuff
- You can turn in Port Reports from the same port multiple times. I don't know if you knew this already but I'm putting it here because it's the single most frequently missed element of the game. Visit every port you pass, grab a report every time.
- You can't leave ships to your heirs. However, you can leave money to them in the form of Heirlooms (assembled in your study from a Captivating Treasure or 10 Outlandish Artifacts) or if you choose the Mirrors and Veils legacies they will inherit 100% of your current Echoes. So whenever possible, if a captain is about to retire, try selling his ship and buying a cheap piece of shit (the 500E life raft if you are feeling really edgy) and leave the money to your heir. It's not perfect but if you've banked enough cash your heir will be able to upgarde as soon as they start.
- There are places early on that are good to explore and get XP from even if you're a low-skill starting character. Visage and Pigmote Isle are good choices. Starting the First Curator's Final Request story in Venderbight and playing chess in the Principles of Coral are also good options. You won't *finish* those quests until much later, but they have a lot of intermediate turn-ins for nice cash rewards.
- Upconvert from your dogshit deck gun to the next best one - I think it costs 400? - ASAP. Before you even set out on your first journey, if possible. It will massively increase your survivability against basic sea-monsters.
- Trading can actually be a valid strategy but you need a big hold to do it. The Merchant Vessel is of course ideal; once you get up to that, take advantage of some of the game's best trade routes (coffee to the Surface for as long as that lasts, smuggling sunlight-filled mirrorcatch boxes to the Blind Bruiser or to the Isle of Cats, or buying Casks of Mushroom Wine in London, turning those into Sacks of Darkdrop Coffee at the Wildweald Court in the Empire of Hands (must have unlocked the court first), and then trading the Coffee in Irem for Bales of Parabola-Linen, which can be sold back in London or in Dahut if you have a zubmarine to the tune of like ~50 echoes per unit profit - when the ship can hold 120 units that is a decent potential profit even after allowing for supplies + fuel).

Oh dang, for some reason I thought that your club went into the affiliation slot, so I wasn't hugely concerned with getting it.
Pleasantly surprised to find that I now have 15 BDR upon joining the Young Stags.
Hm. It would appear as though I need to arrange to have myself exiled to the Tomb-Colonies so I can hunt an exotic beast that lives there. That should be...interesting.

Switching my connected pet to this bandaged Raven is the best thing I've ever done
I'm sitting on 5 Tomb Colonies favors now just from cycling through opportunity cards
EDIT: Oh hey I think we lost the updated players list that we had in the Christmas forum, Orphane shoot me a friend request for plant battles
I accidentally stumbled into that place where you can get the remote residences and decided to get one while I was there. What's so good about these again?

Fewer (in most cases) shitty opportunity cards to draw.

By "in most cases" do you mean it depends upon the residence or that some of the cards it gets rid of aren't bad though most of them are?

Yeah it takes away all the draw cards labeled "city vices." A few of them aren't bad but most of them just end up being dross once you get deep enough into the game.
that said I dont think it's worth giving up a 4 or 5 card home for really.

The one thing that bugged me between Sunless Sea and Fallen London was the obvious inconsistency in the value of an Echo, but I understand the gameplay necessity as FL works on getting dozens of items and Sunlees Sea does not

Well, I just took four carts of echoes over to the Bazaar and paid them all the money I had. But I return.
With a goat. A terrible goat. A goat whose gaze you cannot escape.
Eeee, he is adorable I am going to name him Biffy.
Is this a goat for companionship and watchful boosting, or is this a goat for...

This Renown mechanic seems to be new since last I played. Is this like a super Connected: status?
Do I have to just buy the items to build it up?
I think the favours system is new as well.

I have been back playing for a couple of months now and I still have no idea how to raise Renown.

from what I can tell you can initially raise Renown in Ms PLenty's carnival up to 5, but after that you have to buy the consumable items from the bazaar from Nikolas Pawnbrokers and convert any favors you have into Renown
so you can turn in favors for immediate benefits, or convert them into Renown, which unlocks additional opportunities
Renown is a little funny. Currently they are in the process of swapping more and more factions over to the favor/renown system. Urchins are next, if anyone cares.
Basically, the way the system works is that you can always convert Favors into Renown using a specific item bought from the Bazaar. For example, the Criminals use the Old Bone Skeleton Key bought from Nikolas Pawnbrokers. Just go to your invetory to use the item and it will have options you can use. In the beginning, it will take any favors you have and convert them, but later you need to wait until you have a full stack of 6 or . Renown doesn't really have an immediate use, but it unlocks things at different levels.
For example, the Rubberies, the Criminals, the Dock Workers, and the Tomb Colonist all have special items that can be unlocked at 10, 25, and 40 renown. The one at level 10 is unlocked on the faction card from your deck and the rest are hidden around London (or beyond).
So basically, it gives you the option. You can choose if you want to burn the favors to quick cash and items or slowly grind up your renown with the factions for nice unique items.
The main nice thing is once have renown, you can never lose it. Unlike the old faction system which you are constantly going up and down with factions making keeping them all high a pain in the butt balancing act.

I don't think so. I had used it on Avaia a couple of days ago because they had been active recently but then lol I guess they took a break
