I had to move today and ended up at a place without HBO.
It's going to be a long month.
You can catch the "big" segment of LWT on youtube the day after.
Yeah. Doesn't really change anything else, though. The place I was at wasn't that great, but it was 'home'. I'll be out of this new place just as soon as I can swing it.
When is the Nightly Show going to get rid of the "serious interview candidate+two no name comedian panelists" format? I think that's the only way the show could be watchable. It's not even that it's boring, it's that a large chunk of the show is dedicated towards being profoundly disrespectful to people doing a lot of legitimate work
Yeah, that Bill Nye segment was offensively bad.
couldn't have been worse than the time one of his guests, during the Tsarnaev panel, suggested that we should forcibly perform SRS on him to facilitate his fellow inmates raping him until he's executed and Larry failed to halt the panel then and there to ask "Dude what the shit?"
That was the episode that caused me to stop watching. Giving anti-vaccination people legitimacy was a huge red flag, and them defending giving anti-vax people legitimacy as a "both sides" thing was the tipping point. Applauding someone saying that SRS and prison rape should be used as a punishment, and gleefully advocating corporal punishment, was enough to ensure that I will absolutely never watch the show again, even if it improves.

The big problem is like, the show could have presented a fantastic platform to examine a lot of the issues that minority groups are facing in the country, something that even though the other shows touched on they didn't have it as a focus [and from the initial pitch seemed like that was what the plan was going to be]
Then it descended into that.
I watched a some beyond that out of morbid curiousity but it never really improved. They didn't start suggesting more criminals to inflict gender dysphoria, rape and other assorted tortures by proxies of the state, but it didn't get any better.
And now Colbert is on the Late Show and it's basically an extended-length, five-day-a-week Colbert Report with Colbert as himself instead of playing a faux-Arch Conservative Pundit, so I've got no reason to stick with it any longer.
I've flipped by a few times and they made some changes to improve the flow of the show. But the never really did address the issue that overall how they're doing it is crap.
And Larry Wilmore is a terrible host. He's douchey like Maher, but without the smarm charm to bring it back. If he's playing a character, he should stop. If he isn't, he should still stop. And as milski said, one real guest and two comedians is a terrible balance. Especially when they're writers/producers of the show.

I happened to catch the Bill Nye thing on The Nightly Show. It made me want to punch the TV. I know they are comedians and they are playing it for laughs but I don't think devaluing science because it doesn't involve porn or Kardashians is a good message to send.
So tonight's LWT had a segment on the new app Peeple, which lets you rate other people. The entire segment, all I could think of was that someone actually made Meow Meow Beenz from Community.
Interesting how John didn't mention how badly Reagan screwed up this country's mental health system by slashing its funds and implementing half of the deinstitutionalization plan, the part where they close down mental institutions and let all the mentally and developmentally disabled patients out, while not doing anything to set up the smaller more mainstreamed community mental health services that were supposed to take care of all those people.

I think it's a hump that a lot of comedians can't really get over. Example: I enjoy @Midnight. That might mean I have shit taste, or I have great taste, but in any case, I've been a fan of the show for a while.
Now, Chris Hardwick never misses a chance to go "Russia LOL," which is par for the course for a comic in this scenario. He won't stop doing that for a variety of issues, nor should he, right? Except when the news of the proposed head transplant (possibly in 2017) by Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero. When explained that the patient in question was Russian, Hardwick did his usual, "Yeah, Vladimir Putin personally made him 'volunteer', gun-to-his-head, lolz," spiel, as he always had. To be expecting, very consistent as in the past.
Except he was taking a giant shit all over Valery Spiridonov, a young graphics designer who has lived with debilitating muscular atrophy his whole life and has been wheelchair bound for the same time. Who volunteered for an incredibly dangerous medical procedure because, hey, maybe he'd like to walk again or help other people with the same life of nonstop pain and suffering who share his condition walk too down the line. All of which you could find out via Google in about sixty seconds (which I have to assume Chris Hardwick and/or his writers do, in fact, own a computer of some sort and can, in fact, use the internet).
But no, all that matters is that he's Russian, so lets shit all over some thirty-year-old who's been in a wheelchair since infancy. Also something, something, lol China (given that we don't know anything about a Chinese donor, or even if there will be one available ultimately, that's not as bad).
That's kind of fucked up, at least I think so (and given how Hardwick has blasted people for shitting on the suffering of others for laughs, I guess this might be considered 'irony'). But I'm under the impression that Hardwick and the like, if they were aware of the whole story, would wear it as a badge with pride--it's how they established their comic street cred, or something similar. If they didn't, they'd be censoring themselves, and if they censor themselves, it's the death of free speech, or something to that effect. "Yeah, sure, I was shitting all over some loser cripple who hopes for a new body one day. Maybe he shouldn't have been born Russian, or crippled."
That's my theory. Sorry if it's a tangent, but I felt there was some commonality between the shows in tone and political disposition.

John seems determined to minimize Democrat vs. Republican conflict on his show. Even when calling out Trump and Carson, it was in the context of them saying that we need to do more, and then pointing out the current situation, and then insisting that they do more than put lip service to the idea. He did call our Huckabee for what Huckabee did as a governor, but Huckabee is the least popular of the three right now.
John's goal seems to be to repackage left wing goals into a politically agnostic platform. He wants to sidestep the politics, make it about people who are hurt and suffering due to bad policy. He's trying to do issue judo, and nudge the Overton window over so that the right wing sees things from a left wing perspective.

If you want to have a real effect it's the right way to attack an issue. The concepts of left and right wing are so instantly polarizing that people oppose whatever you're selling on principal. "Look, this is super fucked up (with a crushing mountain of examples) and however we got here it needs addressing" is fantastically more effective.

Espescially since there are often both 'right' and 'left' wing actions to be taken on many issues. Often things need more time and money, but the issue is also being ignored by community groups and the money coming into the issue is being spent unwisely. There's so much messed up, that any ideology than can be persuaded that bad things are bad has things they can get behind doing.

Italian-Americans don't want it changed because they lose a day celebrating an Italian figure
Other people do want it changed because Columbus and expedition raped and murdered tons of natives.
Can't we just call it Vespucci day and compromise? Vespucci essentially called Columbus an asshole by showing that Columbus had not discovered either of the actual American continents. Italian's get an Italian day about someone who is less of an asshole.
Though I love the part in the Sopranos where they discuss Columbus day and the native Italian guy he picked up in Season 2 doesn't like Columbus because he was a northern Italian who historically shat on southern Italians all the time.

Not to mention Amerigo Vespucci is the guy the American Continents are named after.

For me it was elementary school that gave me that knowledge.
Damn, I was under the impression that Columbus was a businessman/explorer first, and it was later expeditions by others that really screwed the natives. But then I read his later expeditions....ugh.
But then I found out that Columbus's expedition was a likely conduit to bringing syphilis to Europe from the New World? I did not know that...
I've tried to watch Trever Noah like three times now, and each time he just hasn't been funny. Like he's been painfully unfunny. The last time was the episode with his Uber segment that just totally flopped as did everything else he tried that episode.
Re-watching the early days of Jon's run through the Month of Zen, they took a while to really take off. Yes, granted, Trevor has advantages in infrastructure for the show, but they also have a ton of new Correspondents as well, and 'the old guard' doesn't exactly have piles of seniority either.
It's not a fully new show, but it wouldn't surprise me if they needed a while to get things running on all cylinders again all the same.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!

Find the bit where he compares Trump with African dictators.
I thought the Trump thing was great, the zombie Ben Carson thing was great, and his line on pro-lifers being like comic book collectors was brilliant. He's had a lot of stuff fall really flat (it seems he does a lot of throw-away jokes at the end of stories, and even when most of it's good, these throw-aways are pretty lame), but he's also had a lot of really funny, and really insightful stuff.
