There is only a single independent running in any of my local elections and his entire website is just a big banner saying "no casino! print this out and give it to your friends!"

I really don't want to vote for democrats but the only other option I have is even worse.

I wish the options were always between good and bad, but sometimes they're between status quo and awful. The choice is clear, and next time it might be better.

also, been receiving a whole lot of the american crossroads cold calls. they tell you at the end and not in the beginning. maybe they changed that? i dont know if they do it upfront like in michigan

anyhow, yeah talk about feeling weird about the old gig. "And how do you feel about this?" at length

i dont know, sir. it's pretty fucked up. the candidate is pretty conservative, all told. he kinda seems like the sort who, if you weren't watching would cum into his sock, and smell it and try to think of a smell he could use to compare?

i dunno, those calls are worth it, misgendering and all

I might use this crucial time as leverage in trying to get a bunch of local state reps behind the idea of sponsoring legislation to get unlimited corporate finance out of politics. I mean I have no other leverage* other than "I potentially won't vote for you and will tell everybody else not to" but I'm going mainly on the basis that politicians are a superstitious and cowardly lot.

*Other than it being the number one issue across all political parties and something that would save them from spending their time fund raising and worrying potential corporatist usurpers.

Oh and also doing it because it's the right thing and we should have a more representative democracy and uphold the American dream or something.

Man, I am ready for Rick Snyder to lose the gubernatorial race here in Michigan, but it seems pretty split. I am not particularly unhappy with other elected officials in MI, but Snyder has been pretty much following a plan that is diametrically opposed with my views on a multitude of issues.

I am happy to see that Shaheen is predicted at 83% to win NH, because I would hope that people could see through Scott Brown blatantly moving to NH just to take advantage of a weak senate race. Not to mention his ads keep hammering on issues that have nothing to do with New Hampshire.

If Hillary does run, I think she'd smoke Jeb pretty easily.

first... if? come on. be serious. she's running. and she will win the nomination

second, based on what do you assume that she will automatically rout whatever opponent shows up in the general? Hillary is a deficient politician to put it kindly. If there were ever an analog to Romney on the Democratic side she would be in the running for it.

I see no evidence of a strong Hillary coalition that approaches what Obama has built (and is presently in the middle of losing)

It's less about the strength of Hillary and more about the republican candidates always coming off as creeps or cold, robotic puppets of monied interests. They are so nakedly showing themselves as the party of Angry White Men, and an increasingly diverse nation will vote for that less and less.

this is why Jeb Bush is a good candidate

Bush is well educated, soft spoken, not tightly integrated with the business community to the point of suspicion like Romney was and W. was sometimes perceived to be, overtly moderate, well funded, respectable record as Governor, and he speaks fluent spanish to boot

He is many things that the puppets that get put on TV are not, and he is so different from his brother, outwardly and inwardly that I think the public would dismiss his last name

Jeb Bush is a great candidate, but he faces some hurdles from within and without his party. Jeb is pretty close to being a RINO which is a strength in the actual election vs. a democrat opponent, but a detriment to his nomination chances within his own party. The GOP really needs to swing back to a more moderate stance to have a strong showing in the general election, but their internal posturing is leaning more conservative and far-right thanks to very vocal members of that community. If they can push through that and nominated Jeb (or another moderate candidate like my boy John Huntsman Jr.) then they're in a good position.

After that, Jeb just has to tout his success in Florida and his moderate views. It's going to take a lot of educating the general public to get them to not see Jeb as another highly-conservative GOP white dude. He also has to overcome the "Another Bush" stigma as well, which could prove difficult. He's certainly different from his dad/brother, but will the public realize that?

I think recent history is skewing peoples perceptions on how willing the GOP is to get out of the way of candidates with influence and donors. 2008 was a poisonous election cycle for the GOP and I think that the venom as finally drained now that the party has seen what the primary did to damage Romney's chances

I forecast a very easy primary for Jeb runs. If he doesn't run, then it will be chucklefuckery barring some darkhorse

  • JayKaosJayKaos Registered User regular
Hillary v Jeb would certainly be interesting, with one side trying to make her look like Clinton 2.0 and the other side trying desperately to stop him from looking like W. Bush 2.0.

I, personally, don't think Jeb will run. If he does he'll get clobbered in the primaries by people who want thw republican party to go even further right. It seems like they've given up on winning any moderate/independent votes and are really just hoping that the far right can carry them through an election.

Plus, this is a party who has completely put their foot down on immigration reform, ignoring totally the HUGE amount of immigrants, and the children of immigrants, who place a lot of stock on that issue. You saw it when President Obama got reelected. Republican analysts said that OH LATINOS ARE STRONG FAMILY VALUES VOTERS THEY'LL SWING RIGHT and the Latino population OVERWHELMINGLY did not do that, and the GOP has changed literally nothing about their platform or strategy.

I think that, other than a very vocal minority, the politics in the United States is swinging, and will continue to swing, gradually to the left and unless the GOP is willing to soften their image and move at least a little bit on some issues they've been particularly stubborn on (such as climate change, gay marriage, etc) then they're going to continue to get their eyes blackened in really important races, and they will also continue to scratch their heads and wonder why

Election time is always entertaining here in Utah. I can summarize all candidates as follows:

Republican: "I can't officially say that I am endorsed by the LDS church, because doing so would actually invoke fairly severe censure from church leadership, who have expressly forbidden that behavior. But I can imply the shit out of it."

Democrat (campaigning inside Salt Lake City): "Maybe we shouldn't treat homosexuals like living garbage? Would that be so bad?"

Same Democrat (campaigning outside Salt Lake City): "Actually, I'm secretly a Republican too."

Everyone Else: "Screw it, not gonna win anyway, 420 FOR LIFE BLAZE IT MOTHERFUCKERS!!! 9/11 WAS FREEMASONS!!!"

Utah is just terrifying to me now
When I was at the Mormon temple it was like one of those movies where a society is so perfect that you know something is instantly wrong

Has Jeb expressed interest in running? No one has really heard anything from him in quite some time, since he left office in 2007, and he's pretty staunchly denied that he has any interest in running. The only inkling that anyone has gotten that he actually wants the job, is when someone asked Dubya.
