The Death of Freddie Gray and the Baltimore Riots Update: Police Charged!

edited May 2015 in Debate and/or Discourse
The events for this have been getting notable enough I feel it deserves its own thread. For background, a black man named Freddie Gray died in police custody in unclear circumstances. This led to protests which have just recently turned violent. A number of officers have been injured and there's been a bunch of property damage.

If anyone has links to better video or from people streaming on location I'd appreciate it.

Anchors said the fire department can't get to it because of crowds.

Edit: Shows what they know! Fire dept is there.

Just a bit of the rioting photos from the past few days (the first riot was Saturday evening), starting with an injured cop.

I suspect incidents like this will only become more common in the future.

It looks like the "metro station on fire" pic is actually showing the smoke from the burning police car in front of the Subway.

edit: Oh I guess that's probably been cleared up, based on your edit.

At this point, I think it is going to take some sort of concerted insurgency action to generate the kind of federal involvement in local PDs that we need.

Sympathy is useless. What is necessary is fear.

I can't find it at the moment, but there was an incident where a reporter praised the cops for "showing restraint" while a protester "shoved a sign in their faces".

    From 8 feet away.

    Behind a fence.

I find that doubtful. It's not being reported and there were no rioters anywhere near the fire department. Police had the area cordoned off.

Yeah the funeral being today it was a measure of respect to not do it. Plus the family asked for they said on TV a few times.

"A riot is the language of the unheard."

That's a nice quote that is taken out of context and is often debated about whether MLK would actually encourage riots in situations like these.

Protests should come first, imo. Then if you are unheard, riots could be used as a way of getting the government's attention.

Going straight from "This is an injustice" to "Riot and Loot all the things" looks like and often is just an excuse used by bad people to riot/loot.

    well, then nevermind!

this is the first i've heard about it

which proves that maybe rioting/looting is the right thing to do in this case.

Let's head off the assumptions of the keyboard warriors here and now: There wasn't a protest, a march, a rally, or anything today. Freddie Gray's family had the funeral today, and they wanted peace. This whole fucking thing stemmed from this:

    7c0307e5-8f41-4d11-a89d-ab62811b55b5_800_zpsvgkkphm5.jpg

And when all the high schools got out of school around NorthWest Baltimore, they went on a riot and looting spree. Just fuckin' went to town. The police show up, and every 7-11, CVS, and liquor store became a target. This isn't an affirmation that Black Lives Matter, or a statement of rampant inequality, just good ol' plain fashioned larcenous fuckery.

Well that goes against the narrative of people like Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) that the rioters are 'mainly from out of town'
