So, I'm really liking tower mode but it just illustrates the one thing which annoys me most about Splatoon, and all games like it which lock down a game mode into "ranked" status, and that's that I would like to play splat zones and tower control without worrying too much about winning or losing because of the effect on my score. To me, even if you exclude some modes from ranked (I agree Turf War wouldn't make much sense) I don't think any game mode should be excluded from casual play.

I'd be okay with it if normal play rotated between modes, but I personally wouldn't want extra queues just for said modes. Would dilute the player base too much and make queue times longer.

Ugh. Nothing worse than teammates who won't even try to ink the splat zone.
Charger just hanging back trying to ink with full charge shots. Their range ends like a third of the way across the zone. I think my other teammates were all trying to be fancy and flank, and... yeah it went badly.
I don't fully understand the game's obsession with rotation. Why not allow players to pick which mode they want to play, either ranked or not? Why only two stages at a time?
I think they only have two stages at a time to help casual players learn the maps more easily. If you play the same map over and over it's a lot easier to learn the nuances of it then if you only get to play it once every 8-10 matches. People not use to shooting games probably feel lost running around levels so this helps them learn the layouts a bit better.

I think the random rotation of stages is to force people to play on every stage and avoid the whole "Fox Only, Final Destination" thing where the player base really only plays on a limited set of maps.
No clue why they don't just let us pick the mode for ranked/unranked. Maybe it'd create too many potential lobbies that might not get filled up for ages.

Had some idiot doing that on tower control last night. Just sat on our point with a charger doing nothing. Dude finished 0-3 while the other guys and I played a 3v4 with 20+ splats each. We lost with like 20 seconds left on the clock.

I love tower control! Sadly the lag is so bad in my apartment right now that I just cannot get anything going.
Grumble grumble and all that. Luckily escorting the tower seems to be my calling... But man am I already hating luna blasters.
Soon enough the community will have devised an effective counter for the luna blaster. Keeping them at arm's length is already a thing: Custom Dual Squelcher seems to be an important weapon there: out-ranges everything but a charger, faster than charger, has the killer wail which is really at its most effective in tower control, the only mode so far that demands someone be standing in a specific spot.
Question. Can you deploy Splash Wall on the tower, and if so... what stops a team from going 4x splash walls and just being invincible while riding it?
I guess Inkstrike or Killer Wail can take people out, but that's about it?

I haven't read the patch notes yet, but did they nerf the 52 gal? It seems way less accurate and even slower firing compared to how it performed before. Am I just crazy?

Just played this long enough to hit the third rank. It's neat how if you're waiting long enough in matchmaking, the game starts to take the differences in social dynamics between dogs and cats into account.
After playing Spatfest for about an hour, despite the fact that I've reached Level 15, getting close to 16, I've discovered that I'm kind of terrible at this game and that there are some really tricky players out there. I find that I keep getting myself killed right before or just as my Special Meter fills up, and even when I do get my Special, I have a really difficult time finding a safe place to deploy it (I've been finding myself using weapons with the Ink Strike lately). I also tend to do a poor job of actually landing kills even when I do have an advantage on an opponent. So I've been mostly contributing in losses to my team. Sorry, Team Cat! Maybe I'll do better in the morning.
EDIT: Then again, I should probably be less surprised at my performance, since I'm very much a solid "C" player in Ranked battles, having been stuck at that rank for a couple weeks. And hey, despite the fact that I seem to be losing most of the time, the game is still great fun! Consistently playing a game I'm bad at... that's a testament to how good the game is.
I'm doing absurdly well. I've already hit Champion, and have only lost three battles. I know that dogs are just inherently superior to cats, but I didn't expect quite this much of a wipeout.

If I have to single-handedly drag Team Meow to victory, so be it. Currently my Splatfest record stands at 25 glorious victories to 5 complete bullshit defeats

Yeah. you're trown in to the deep in ranked. Would be great to play those modes without the ranking pressure.

Got up to Dog Defender, but I'm finding myself "yeah"ing more Cat posts. They're just so cute!
too tired right now to really add much to my team, and my ranked hunter/killer skills don't translate at all to turf war. I can start a rally but I can't single-handedly maintain it.
Managed to drag my way up to cat champion before having to leave for the days festivities, despite doing much of it +2 at a time. I swear, if most of my Splatoon teammates were at the original 4th of July, we'd all still be British. I think my overall W/L for this game is like 0.25, despite almost never scoring below 1000.

Not that it addresses the main concern, but it might help to take the attitude that I tend to hold about ELO systems: the system exists in order to help create a reasonable challenge for you. If your rank is honestly assessed as a C, then so be it; you'll get matched with other C's and go about 50/50 on wins and losses (which is preferable to always stomping or getting stomped).
To put it another way, don't treat A+99 as a goal you must reach in order to "win". Just... play Splatoon, and rest assured that you're getting matched with people about as good as you are.

That's how I view it; I'm not particularly good, so I'm currently fluttering around the the C boundary, but whatever, the rank doesn't actually do anything; if you got, like, an exp/cash bonus at higher ranks perhaps it would be worth fretting over. But as you don't it's pretty much irrelevant and just lets you play some different game modes.
The tower one is real fun, I like it a lot. Splat zones I'm not sure I understand the finer mechanics of; what generates the 'second' timer which sort of locks the main one?

The point difference between the teams so if our team gets to 2 and the other team was at 100 and takes the zone, I think we get the +98 timer as a kind of handicap.
Splatfest is so great. It's incredible the extent they've been able to make it feel like a real, exciting event. The decked-out plaza, the different feel of everything at night time, the change in music, the miiverse posts bursting in the sky as fireworks! It's crazy.
I wasn't expecting for ALL of the music to change. It's nice. The matchmaking times for Team Dog? Not so nice. I was going to play a lot today, but I might pass
Also, I thought I read that you didn't get points when you faced off against your own team. Did that change at some point?

You still get personal points. The win and personal scores don't contribute to the overall cat/dog evaluation.

I am wondering the same thing, because whenever I go to ranked matches it's still splat zone. Haven't been able to try tower control yet
Disagree. The RG is working wonders for me. Ink mines are great in tower, and ink strike is surprisingly useful.
