    Important: Cole Train time changed!
We will still have a timed exclusive to reward the most loyal beta players – on Saturday from 2:00 - 5:00 PM PDT (4:00 - 7:00 PM Mexico/CDT, 5:00 - 8:00 PM EDT, 10:00 PM - 1:00 AM GMT) we will be giving away the Cole Train skin only to players who play during that exact time period.

    Was
Each day you play has a weapon skin unlocked. If you play that day, you unlock that weapon skin for the full game. Thrashball Cole will also be available to unlock if you play from 3-8pm PDT on Saturday.

No confimation in that thread that I saw while skimming responses.

Today in my "I think I'm only going to play enough to get counted for participation/skins" adventures in Gears of War Ultimate Beta...

I rediscovered the only other way to play Gears of War 1 is Extreme range camping with the Torque Bow and Sniper... there's next to no mid-range combat.

It's entirely possible for an opponent to initiate a chainsaw execution on you from 6 feet away consistently.

It's also entirely possible for you to miss point blank shots with the Gnasher... because... reasons?

At the very least I'll do the single player if I buy this, and hope that there aren't too many multiplayer achievements.

Yeah im done. Ive put up with this franchise for three games waiting for it to be fixed. Even after 10 years they are too lazy / stupid to make even the most basics of changes. Im skipping this gigantic piece of half assed garbage.

TBF to the game, it's primarily a remaster, so the old gameplay is going to be intact... even it it means throwing away the better later iterations (I liked GoW 3 MP and Judgement MP). More interested in Gears 4 though, tbh.

Yeah. Like I said to me the Remaster seems to be more for the competitive folks who think that Gears 1 was the pinnacle of the multi experience.

And while I did love some shotgun battles, I'm good.

i loved gears 1 multiplayer....when gears 1 released. despite the complaints about stopping power and other factors in later versions i much prefer it to the absurd wall bounce gnasher fights. that being said ill still be getting this for both the coop (never played the PC levels) as well as the multiplayer.

  • EspantaPajaroEspantaPajaro Registered User regular
Its not the gnasher fights I dont like its the entire consistency problem . Why is it this franchise can not solve that? Is it the engine? Its a game that revolves around shooting but cant be bothered to make sure that central mechanic actually works. Or maybe 40-55 ping is just way too high for such an "intensive" game.

rofl, my K/D in this beta is .21 and my w/l is .20 across 6 matches.

And I just remembered I can't play as Cole in Gears 1. At least I get the skins though!

In the Gears 3 Beta, the Retro was a hard counter to Shotgun charging. Of course, the usual crowd whined and cried and rent their garments, so they ruined the accuracy and made sure Shotguns remained completely OP in most circumstances. At least they kept Lancers as useful, playing Ultimate Beta, it's laughable how little damage a sustained burst does.

  • ArteenArteen Adept ValeRegistered User regular
I love that the game is more colorful than the original. It really looks great.

Maybe when it's $20 or cheaper I'll pick it up.

Not a huge fan of the beta. It looks great but unlike the Halo collection this holds no nostalgia for me really. Plus why no fireteams in beta? Why does it keep the same teams between games? Why do I taste blood?
I will probably pick up the game for story stuff after it goes on sale. Not hyped for GoW4 much but we'll see as more news comes out.

If it's just for the story stuff, then honestly, I'd skip it and hit up youtube. You're not missing much.

And I'm saying this as someone who's probably going to get it, but partly because I want the other iterations to hit PC side. Although I'm feeling even that's a bit of a slim chance. given MS's history here.

I actually dig the Gears lore. I liked the campaigns in each game, and it'll be the first time I played GoW1's story in almost 10 years. Co-op was a blast. Did they say if it will have 4 player co-op instead of the original's 2 player?

God, Gears 1 had such a half-assed story. I'll be interested in seeing if they flesh it out at all, given they're redoing all the cutscenes. I think I mentioned it before, but I'd REALLY like it if they

-Set up the world better. Previously you only got the backstory for shit if you left the menu screen alone for a minute. That cutscene really needs to play when you start the game
-Go into why Marcus is a prisoner a bit more; it's odd how that wasn't discussed in-game until, like, Gears 3.
-People need to react more to the revelation that Fenix's dad had more Locust tunnel data than the resonator. That should be "WTF?" level news.
-Maybe make it a little clearer where Baird found that Geobot. As is, he asks people to keep an eye out for one and then he just has one. Maybe he could chime in to tell Marcus to quit looking because he found one, or show him finding one while he's with Marcus and Dom.

They're including the PC levels, so the whole weirdness with the train will thankfully be fixed. Yay!

I only found out that emulsion was supposed to be a fuel a long time afterwards when I accidentally stumbled on an ad for the game on youtube which said as much. Nice job there guys.

Personally I wouldn't count on the rest of those.

Regarding the PC levels, they do a minor role of explaining things, but it's less backstory, and more "here's how they got from A - to - B". That said, I can't imagine the game flowing too well between those sections without them.

I like the ideas of the setting, but the actual implementation in the main narrative is pretty lacking.

I remember reading an interview years ago with one of the lead writers on Gears of War 1, who had also been one of the writers on Bioshock 1. One of the first things they asked her was basically "why the huge difference in plot treatment?".

Her response was basically that the narrative and plot was all built up around Gears very early on, and then as development proceeded, other people basically had to take this narrative and fit it around the game, level design and gameplay as it was being developed and built. As development goes on, more and more of this has to be sacrificed to cede to other design concerns.

Whereas in Bioshock it was a more organic process, with the writers being more involved through the project, and being able to have input so that crucial story elements came through.

Seen in that light, it makes sense that so many games have such terrible narratives. It's only fairly recently that proper writers seem to have been becoming more involved with a game as it progresses through development, as opposed to treating story and narrative as something you would simply bolt on as its own separate piece. It doesn't work like that.

John Carmack once famously said that "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important." It's something I can't really get behind (depending on the game), and I think the industry's starting to leave that thinking behind. To me a good strong narrative can seriously turn a good game into a great one. It adds context to everything you do and if done properly, make the player feel a lot more invested in the proceedings. People often pose narrative and gameplay design goals as being antithetical. But to me if the game designers and game writers are doing a good job, those two actually strengthen each other.

Doesn't mean it's necessary for all games, but if you're going to go to the trouble of designing a world and backstory and characters to go with it, the least you can do is have a narrative that let's the player know what it is.

It explains why the lightmass bomb was on a train with a bunch of locust.. Otherwise you just go from the end of chapter 4 having just aquired the data, to having to jump onto this train for unexplained reasons at the start of chapter 5.
I disagree on some of those. I like that Gears started in media res. I like that the world is only filled out later on. Same with Marcus' prison sentence.

Again, the cutscene explaining the world and the war was IN THE GAME. It just only played if you started up the game and didn't hit start right away. This caused a LOT of confusion when the game was released, and if the Ultimtae Edition is supposed to introduce Gears to a whole new generation, that'd probably be a good thing to avoid this time around.

As for the prison stuff, Marcus is such a fucking emotionless slab in that game that knowing he sacrificed his career to try and save his dad would be at least SOME kind of emotional beat for him. They could even tie it in with the fact they have to go back to Fenix manor and get his dad's research.

Also, It's not like it was a big secret they were keeping close to their chest. They revealed it in pre-release materials and eventually the novels.

Nah, the numbers are doing a fairly good job at showing me how much I still suck at Gears of War 1 multiplayer! :P

I also think that the active reload bonus being disabled also makes the lancer even weaker.

There was an art-book if you bought the collectors edition that had descriptions of stuff in it and a making-of DVD. I should go dig mine up.

Despite their "re-affirming" for the umpteenth time how much they want to do good with the PC games side of things, I wouldn't put much past them.

At a rough expectation, I wouldn't be surprised if they announced it was Windows 10 exclusive (similar to what they did with Halo 2 and Vista).

Imulsion on the other hand seems to still exist in some form. Though as a bacterial organism it's hard to not see it surviving and regrowing.

I keed, Traviss and her soldier worship is right at home in the Gears verse, I'd be sorry to lose her. The characters were much better written in 3, tho the plot was weaker. I don't think that's really her fault either tho - 1 and 2 kinda wrote into a corner :P

I think they wasted the character of the Queen at the end. But I guess the CoG really charging her with crimes against humanity when they just committed an act of genocide of their own was a place they really didn't want to go to. Not that there was much of the CoG government left iirc.

This is why I think it would be cool to set it on another world, but that world also has Imulsion. It's like Imulsion is this galaxy-wide planetary infestation, spreading through living biospheres and subverting them. Lambent doesn't even need to become the primary threat, they could have modified machines working on the same principles as Adam's that keep it from mutating to the extent that it did on Sera, it'd just be a cool piece of world-building.
