I've never played a Final Fantasy game... Well I rented one on the SNES when I was 8 or 9 and couldn't make heads or tails of it. Now that I finished Persona 4 Golden this week (woooooooooooooooo!) I'm in the market for a jrpg. I've got a ps4 and a vita any suggestions for which Final Fantasy I should play?
I'd recommend FF4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, and don't get anything later than those because everyone who says they're worth playing is lying to make you waste your time and money :rotate:

You should check out Final Fantasy X/X-2 for your PS4

If you don't want people to waste time and money then why did you include 8 in that?
4 is a great way to get introduced to the series in its classic bent, and I think the 2D (not the 3D) remake is available on PSP/Vita? I don't know how that works.
10 is a fun game to play but I have too many reservations to recommend it as someone's first, coming to the series as a grown-ass adult
5 is maybe the perfect starting final fantasy, assuming you can enjoy how much of a classic jrpg it is.
It has a really well balanced turn based combat system distilled to its absolute essense. No real ridiculous frills.
Thematically, its story touches on all the biggest aspects of the series and has a decent story with solid characters. It accomplishes this without being overblown. It's a simple, fun story that has good pacing.
6 has a better story, and is just a better game, but isn't as down to earth and doesn't have quite as good pacing.
Wait, I'd suggest against getting the ps1 version of V. The dialogue is a lot of the charm and you'd want the gba/ios version for the re-translated script.

Yeah the PS1 version of 5 is kind of bad for a lot of reasons.
Buggy, bad translation (ESPECIALLY Faris, good lord), long load times.
All of Square's ports to the PS1 were kind of shoddy.

Even if it didn't have Kefka, the best villain in the series.
