It's hard work keeping up with this stuff. Though, the rewards are more than enough to outweigh the stress brought on by the endless toil. I must say, listening to so many new albums has really sharpened my ears in a way that I've never experienced before. It used to take me ages to get into a new album, but now I give myself two listens. If I can't remember a single riff, chorus, or lead, then forget it.
In related news, that Eternal Champion debut is quite good. Hearing a lot of influence, ranging from Judas Priest to Slough Feg .
And I guess if King Diamond and Mercyful Fate aren't going to make good albums anymore, one of their supergroup cover bands will>!?!? Pretty impressive emulation. This is one of their earlier released songs but the whole new album is solid.
Opeth started their tour last night and the set list looks fantastic. A good mix of songs including drapery falls, ghost of perdition and deliverance :-)
Can't wait to see them Wednesday!
Also if I was nuts I could see 5 concerts between tonight and next Thursday. As it is I'm going to two but I'm skipping on cattle decapitation(tonight), symphony x(Monday), and leprous(Thursday).

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing Opeth on the 9th. I haven't seen them live in about 5 years.
There's some band playing in my town the day before called Tennger Cavalry. I recognized their name from what was apparently some heavy Facebook advertising a while back. Apparently they're some sort of Mongolian folk metal band or something? Somewhat tempted to go, but I know nothing of their music or their opening band (Incite), plus the show doesn't start until 9 PM? A bit late for me.
They use Mongolian throat singing in their songs, which is a method of multi-tonal singing, which is pretty cool. I haven't actually heard many songs by them, so can't speak to the rest of their music.
There are no really "big" names but that makes it sort of laid back imo. I dunno much about Snailking but they made a name for themselves a year ago or something like that, didn't they? Agatha are a cool-as-fuck sludgy bass-n-drums team, comprising of two talented crust gals.
And Ocean Chief has been a quality mainstay here in Sweden for like the last 10+ years or something... Moloken has been in the game for a while and are cool too.
And the most improved award goes to Freya, which has moved on from a stale hardcore/crossover sound to more of the American melodic heavy metal sound, ala God Forbid and Shadows Fall
E: I know I have some prog friends in the thread, and there isn't really a better place to put this, so I thought I'd post Riverside's new single here. It's kind of a weird quasi-prog-rock/electronic thing: https://youtu.be/tBTZJLXOptM
Also, for any fans of the band, they've decided to continue on as a trio with Piotr's death. And they'll just bring a session guitarist with them on tour.
But holy shit, Snailking won everything! Best show, hands down! I've never actually heard of these dudes, but they played some drone-sludge up in the league of absolute world premiere bands, like Bell Witch, Esoteric et al.
Unfortunately, I was a bit dismayed to discover their two albums doesn't really hold the same epic, never-ending oomph as their live performance did, in a comparison? The productions are so muted...
But if you ever have the chance to see them live, just do it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlbGTC22SpY
Also, even though not really related to the thread, a buddy's folk band Ill Wicker were really great and had a pretty intense show! Sorta Comus, but really not aping Comus, if you get what I mean? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1Gq5J5qkpQ

So there's a live version of "The Drapery Falls" as a bonus track on the new Opeth album. Mike's growled vocals sound pretty rough, and it made me sad. It's not consistently bad, but quite noticeable.
Aside from that, it's a great album. I've listened to it a few times. "Sorceress" is probably my favorite song on there.

Listening to The Sword for the first time in 10 years in preparation for next weekend's Opeth show. These guys are OK. I had a bit of a kneejerk reaction to them being announced as the opener, and I mainly blame that on my only memory of them in the form of a Guitar Hero II track that I didn't enjoy at all ("Freya"). I still don't care for that particular song, but overall they're just a Black Sabbath worship band.
I guess the people at Encyclopedia Metallum really hate them because they're hipster or something?
The used to be great. Gods of the Earth was a sweet 70s throw back metal album, very much like Black Sabbath, and they held that aesthetic for a short period of time. Then they moved fully into boring stoner rock.
I saw them a year ago, singer's also a bit of a diva. Don't worry too hard though, looks like they have a super short set, at least in Toronto. They're on at 8 p.m. then Opeth is on at 8:50. Given set up and sound check times that only gives them like 30 minutes.

Wow!! Nice find for some HM-2 abuse that kicks ass!!
Edit: I really appreciate everyone's contributions to the new-release DB. I love it when I can't keep up anymore!! Go heshers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Edit x2: Yeah, Eternal Champion's The Armor of Ire doesn't quite hold to the standard they set in "I Am The Hammer". Still a great bit of HM!!
Edit x3: Sword's Warp Riders: that's a quality album. Nothing from them made it to FtDR, so I have no opinion on their other releases, because I never bothered to track them down. I thought @autothrall did a review for Warp Riders on MA and FtDR, but maybe he just made that recommendation in an earlier hesher thread?

It's a sentiment shared in far more circles than just on the Encyclopedia, I'm afraid. Personally, I like a couple of their albums (Age of Winters and Kiel convinced me on Warp Riders) and don't really see the big deal, but they were definitely one of the big targets during the 'NO HIPSTER METAL' era because we all know you shouldn't play the music you want to, but should answer to the whims of various cyberforum tribes doing nothing special with themselves. HOWEVER, I do know some people who dislike them and never bring up the H-word, like any other band, so we can never assume.

Oddly enough, while I very much liked "I Am The Hammer", I've found myself liking "Invoker" and "Armor of Ire" more than that first taste of the band.

I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but yeah, I've liked every song I heard as much or more than I Am The Hammer, which is a pretty high bar.
Today I listened to Epitaphs from Well-known Sphinx, which was excellent. I listened to Sorceress from Opeth and it was good, but I just have to be in a specific mood for their newer stuff. Not a huge 70's prog fan, but it had some nice bits. I listened to about half of Rheia from Oathbreaker and really liked what I heard.
In non-metal, I also listened to Transcience from Steven Wilson and really liked it, though it's not really new material.

Ok, fine, I'll listen to the whole Eternal Champion album so I can keep hanging out on this thread. Twist my arm.
You have 48 hours, Auralynx, and not a moment more!!!!
Bro, it's already playing.
They reference-check Moorcock and Howard; I'm all over it even if I'm not loving their mixing. I don't think I'm exactly going to suffer.
E: Invoker is a pretty cool song. It also seems to be the one with the easiest to make out vocals.
E2: Yes, that is a damn good album even if I can't figure out what he's singing a lot of the time which is usually a giant turn-off. I'm forgiving it here.
Gränslandet had an interesting mix of repetitive Isis-style fare they've combined with their own d-beat upbringing. New and small band, but if they'll refine their thing they might go places in a year or two?
I was really surprised by the Otidcrew? Never heard of them, but it was like a boogie soundtrack from an old David Lynch movie had run off, hidden beneath a bridge and grown sludgy and even more strange! Good harmonies and the lady handling (the amazing) vocals and acoustic guitar was just a born front woman! I really hope these guys find a bigger audience and develop their style, because it's worth holding onto! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ARLLWG446w
Next up was an interesting feature! If anyone'd told me the best old-man '70s rawk is played by some young 20-something gals, with a penchant for doom, I'd just stared at the claimant? But that's how it was! Kabbalah are a spanish trio with a lot of talent, sense of melody and spicing their music with proggy weirdness and heaps of vocal harmonies! I wouldn't really say they've perfected their formula just yet but when they do, expect greatness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9LV3V-P2eo
Mammoth Storm was a pleasant new acquintance, I'm usually not too much into this TRVE doom thing but these guys were really good! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mza4fO-v3g
But Moloken were saturday's kings, an unmistakable fact! The audience was generally pretty muted and passive throughout the weekend, something that had nagged me and a pissed-off buddy (whom I hadn't met in 9 years! ) railed against, but even those zombies came alive when singer/bassist Kristoffer Bäckström started radiating energy like Crazy Tazmania! Hella good all-hits show (damn, Seventh Circle!!! ), with a couple of previews of an upcoming album, all in all! https://youtu.be/_fTuecWGKfU

Invoker is basically a love letter to all things Lovecraft. Makes a lot more sense if you know the references. The rest of the songs are something set in what I believe is a Conan-analogue sword and sorcery world.

Yeah, caught that. "Eternal Champion" as the name of the band puts us squarely in Michael Moorcock territory, though, so if someone's got text lyrics I or some other fan of his could pretty easily go over this and try to piece together if we're talking about Corum, Erekose, or most likely Elric's worlds here. It doesn't seem to be in the neighborhood of any of his more sci-fi stuff, but again, I can't really make the guy out over the guitars a lot due to the distortion and mixing.
And if "Last King of Pictdom" isn't a Bran MacMorn reference (one of Robert E. Howard's better not-Conan characters) I'll eat my imaginary Kenny Rogers hat.

They definitely have Moorcock influences, but I think this album is about their own fantasy setting. I could be wrong, though. The video posted in this thread a month ago for I Am The Hammer was a lyric video. It's pretty easy to find on YouTube. They may have lyrics on their Bandcamp page, too.

Do you guys remember Mudvayne? Well the good part of that band, bassist Ryan Martinie is in this new band called Soften the Glare. It's kind of this mellow proggy instrumental thing.

I think it's definitely better, and I like Death Magnetic well enough for what it was.

Yeah, now that I can read that The Cold Sword is Moorcock central. Urlik Skarsol, specifically.
Looks like Sing a Last Song of Valdese is about Kane, as well, who I only know from a weird crossover appearance with Elric.
So, bottom line, these dudes are super-literate and also rock.
It's not bad.
