No, I never got into that one.

I've got an embarrassingly large collection of WotC SW minis, though!

I played a couple games here and there back when I was working graves. A co-worker would bring it in and on slow nights we'd kill a couple hours and lots of Star Wars people.
Remember it was pretty entertaining, but not much more.

I'm a big proponent of going with a comfort list over a "competitive" one. You're much more likely to fly better with stuff you know and you know the ins and outs of a comfort list.

If you're still stuck, put your collection into the X-wing builder, click on "Tools" and have it generate a semi-random list for you.

You may need to make some modifications, but it can be entertaining to try and work with what it gives you.

Well, a friend of mine is going to go Empire, so in the end I might end up going Rebel. I like ships on both sides anyway. On Empire I get to have TIE interceptors and Defenders, on the Rebel side I get to have A-wings and Y-wings. Should look into what makes for a decent basic start with them, and then compare.

If you're going Y-wings, be sure to pick up the Most Wanted set (the Scum and Villainy starter). It's got the Y-wing title card that lets you take a turret attack after you make an attack with the primary weapons, but restricts the turret to firing in the front arc.
Add the Twin Laser Turret and have fun taking three attacks a turn (even if two of them can only do a single point of damage).

Yeah, totally. see317 is pointing out that if you are going whole-hog with Y-wings, Most Wanted is a worthwhile purchase. It probably wouldn't be your first purchase however.

You will still need at least 1 Rebel Y-wing for the rebel pilot cards and bases, but it's perfectly legal to use a scum Y-wing movement dial on a rebel ship (and paint scheme doesn't matter).

I just realized I misread your post, Drascin. I thought you said you had Y-wings and A-wings and were wondering what to get next, instead of looking forward to having them.
    Sorry about any confusion there.

if you're completely new to the game, first buy is a starter box. That gets you an X-wing, a pair of TIEs as well as the assorted templates for firing and moving, the damage deck and rules and a good selection of upgrades. Second thing is probably a second starter for more dice, spare templates and because it's a good deal on the X-wing and TIEs (since the MSRP on the three ships is ~45 bucks the starter is ~40).
After that, you'll be looking for the ships that you want to fly.
If you want to do Y and A wings, than the Y-wing and A-wing expansions are a given.
After that, since you'll have a pretty well rounded selection of Rebel ships and upgrades for small or medium games, maybe the Rebel Aces box (has an A-wing and a B-wing plus upgrades for both).
After that, Most Wanted should be on the list for the title cards I mentioned. Maybe add a rebel Z-95 so you could use the S&V Zs in your Rebel lists.

Next up is a bit harder. Depends on your developing play style and how much you want to spend on the game. You can generally find upgrade cards on eBay if you're looking for something specific that only comes with one ship that you don't want to use. You can also generally find ships and pilot cards pretty cheap as well, though they'll come stripped of upgrades.

Of course, this is all very easy to type out when I'm talking about spending your money. I'm very good at spending other peoples cash.
On the other hand, keep an eye out for online sales and you can save a lot on your brand new tiny space ship hobby/addiction.

Yeah, I'm in Spain, not the US, so prices for me are a little higher. MSRP for me for an Awakens core set is 40€. Online shops have the core at around 35€ though, so that's some savings.

Last nights game on TTS went very well for me! I wanted to try out the YV again, and thought it might be fun to also try out the Scyks:

    LATT'S AND FRIENDS

    100 points

    PILOTS

Latts Razzi [Dengar, K4 Security Droid, Weapons Engineer , Anti-Pursuit Lasers] (44)

Serissu [Adaptability, “Heavy Scyk” Interceptor, Stealth Device, “Mangler” Cannon] (29)

Tansarii Point Veteran [Veteran Instincts, “Heavy Scyk” Interceptor, Stealth Device, “Mangler” Cannon] (27)

    View: http://xwing-builder.co.uk/view/521403/latts-and-friends

    Tweak: http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build/521403

    XWS: http://xwing-builder.co.uk/xws/521403

They were up against Wingman Luke with R2 and Protons, and a Flavorful Chewbacca w/Han and Leia crew.

Chewie was able to negate all of the mangler effects, but with Latt's reducing his agility to 0 for most of the mangler shots, I was able to take him down.

Luke took Latts down to 2 hull single handidly, but I totally goofed on a maneuver for her (left 3 instead of a right 3), and that goof ended up being the best outcome, since it put luke facing the wrong way. I was able to Mangler him down with my remaining Scyk in the next few turns.

Huh. The mission that comes with the Imperial Veterans has the rebels controlling a captured TIE Defender. Also you have, essentially space bombs. You drop them out the back then they shoot forward 5 after the bomber moves.

Okay, so for a first squad purchase, how does getting the Force Awakens core, an A-Wing, and an Y Wing sound as a start? Will those three rebel ships be enough to fly a list, or do I need to scrounge for a fourth?

Also, be honest with me: are Y-Wings worth it? I know that a lot of games have a tendency of making the good old warthog bombers terrible and useless, too slow to be of any real use. I like the things, but if they're going to be unable to hit anything or dodge anything I'd rather save my money there.

Y-Wings can be really good because they're a super cheap platform for turrets, and sometimes turrets are really powerful. You will rarely be disappointed by a simple Y-Wing + TLT.

Now, if you want them to do anything else or be a platform you invest a lot of points into, probably not.

Well, I made a first initial list. The T-70 Poe that comes with the core, an A-wing, and an Y-wing. I put a couple equipment things that the app said came with these expansions on them, and noticed I still had 13 points left, which seemed like too much to fill with a pile of equipment, but too little for a decent ship. So I put in a Headhunter, too.
    =============
    Magenta Squadron
    =============

    Poe Dameron (PS8 Version) (31)

    Gold Squadron Pilot (26)
    Y-Wing (18), R5-D8 (3), Ion Cannon Turret (5)

    Tycho Celchu (30)
    A-Wing (26), Cluster Missiles (4)

    Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Man, the Y Wing absolutely can't dodge for shit, can it. From what I remember of these dice, 1 defense die is not a terribly great chance of doing shit. also, ended up with a single point left. The turret does look pretty great, though. But in any case, would that be a fliable list? Would it better to load up the guys instead of putting the Z-95 there?

If nothing else you want to give Poe Integrated Astromech and the cheapest R2 possible. That gives him an extra hull point.

That seems to be only in the separate T-70 expansion though. I was trying to only use stuff that was inside the ships I used. Might as well give him the cheapest astromech anyway, though, it comes with the Y-Wing.

...aaaand this all appears to be academical, because there doesn't seem to be a single online store in my country with an Y-Wing in stock. That could be a problem.

Poe with PTL and BB-8 is all kinds of fun!

Stealing this from @crimsoncoyote post earlier in this thread:

    Reveal a straight 3.
On reveal, use BB-8 before the move to barrel roll.
Push the Limit to Boost. Gain 1 stress.
    Perform maneuver.
Check pilot stress (green maneuver->remove stress)
    Take action to Focus.

I got rocked at that store tournament trying that list I'd never flown before (Oicunn, Tetran, Juno). Lots of Soontir with Chiraneau, Soontir with Vader, Soontir with Palpatine. One Ghost. I lost my first game 100-0, won my second game 28-100, and lost my last game 100-29 or something. Tetran always died first, and quickly. That has a lot to do with how I flew. I made a few lists during my Bye and after I was defeated that I'll run here at home with friends. Notably, we made a Fuck You list consisting of two Lothal Rebels, one with the titles and shuttle, and a Z-95. Start them on opposite sides and just pincer in.

I did get some cool swag in the form of my first acrylic shield tokens, a Father's Day Luke and Vader pilot card, and some of the Gold Squadron Y-Wing cards they had extra of.
