Just avoid Kevin J Anderson books and you're probably okay. Also I think most of the EU games are good?

    Also Kyle is dope.

No, Rogue One is going to end with the rebel inflation squad, or what's left of them, finally limping into the Death Star schematic library and the room is going to be empty.

Horizontal wipe to a grinning Kyle Katarn (absent from the movie until now) piloting a hijacked ship away from the battle station patting the data cylinder in his breast pocket while wailing jizz music belches out of his sound system.

    Smash cut to black.
    Directed by Gareth Edwards

If the other person doesn't have a sword they're probably not gonna last very long, right?

Like how much training do you need to kill a person without a sword

    Just stab them

    Or slash them

Hacking unarmed persons to death is definitely a low skill barrier type of activity

You would think so, but according to some historical simulations, you'd have a 1 in 20 chance of it going horribly wrong, possibly maiming or killing yourself in the process.

This is a good joke that got overlooked

Does Kyle Katarn join a rebellion by flatly stating he rebels?

I'm with the rogue one on this one. She's the rogue one.

Im surprised there hasnt been more freaking out over Thrawn being canon in here.

It might have been shocking once, but this "new" continuity has really only thrown out the stories which were objectively bad, removes the stuff that conflicts with the new films, and seems determined to incorporate the best parts of the old EU into the New. Why? Because fan favorites = money.

Believe me, I'm not complaining. Now when Kyle Katarn makes it back into canon, that'll be a sweet day.

    Hell no
Thrawn was one of the better parts of the EU Kyle Katarn is someone's self masturbation script

I like how they brought Thrawn back basically intact from the Heir to the Empire series
He was foilable even though he was a figure of awe as militarily he was undefeatable but his problem as it was written in HttE was the force why he relied on C'Baoth

But it will be interesting to see how they write and use him in Rebels since they flushed the EU {yay} but are cherry picking the good parts without the luggage

As it seems they will build up the Mandalore in the age of the empire without using that series of masturbation books

Kyle has his own adventures, supporting cast, etc. He never overshadowed "major" characters.

Garak Starkiller, now he's a Sue. Did you know he was better at everything than every main character, and defeated every villain? And was such a special snowflake none of the original films would have happened were it not for him?

Kyle is Charles Bronson in space.

    latest?cb=20080115070356

suddenly i'm interested in the star wars eu

kyle katarn is a disillusioned former storm trooper who went AWOL and became a mercenary

the alliance hired him for a succession of jobs between Empire and Jedi

the whole time he's like "who cares about your cause, just gimme that paper"

then later he finds out he's heir to a jedi legacy and he's like "UGH FINE I'LL USE YOUR STUPID LASER SWORD but only for now and then after I kill this guy I'm gonna be a gun for hire again"

and then somebody kidnaps his girlfriend and he has to do it all again

    he's preeeeettty dope

Luke has to twist his arm to convince him to actually join his Jedi.

Kyle was, "yeah, but then I can't use guns and have to use *shudder* restraint."

Also literally eggs on his students to use darkside powers so long as they don't go all meglomanical.

That's pretty much what Luke did in Return of the Jedi. Just decided he wasn't going to play the Emperor's game at the end, and put his trust in his father.

The FFG RPG books have a supplement out that talks about some other aliens and their unique cultural ties to the Force that are totally non-Jedi in nature.

or Yoda and Ben's game, for that matter. There's a decent argument to be made that both sides of that particular philosophical divide are equally wrong and/or messed up, and that it's Luke who fulfills the prophecy by bringing balance and nuance to the Force rather than self-destructive everything-or-nothing absolutism.

The theorizing around Star Wars is often so much better than the actual stories. It's also often so much worse.

Pretty much the reason why Vader doesn't throw around force lightning.

Oh yeah, every FFG supplement is mostly fluff. Every single item or ship or whatever will have at least one paragraph devoted to describing it. Another thing I really like is that each class supplement book has whole chapters for the GM on how to create adventures to let that character class shine.

Ugh, even as an old EU fan, lightsaber "forms" were so duuuuumb.

Read the Wookiepedia entry on Mace Windu's "Form VII" and you'll see what I mean. It's a fighting style you can only use while being almost-but-not-quite darkside which makes zero sense. That's like saying you can't do a Do cut in Kendo unless you're a Libertarian.

The dice system takes a little getting used to and can turn off some people because it is more... abstract, but with a creative GM and players it can work wonders to create the kind of narrative Star Wars deserves.

    And the supplements are FANTASTIC.
