Would anyone recommend Mick Jenkins? He's the only alternative to Carly Rae Jepsen until Broken Social Scene plays in over an hour. Only vaguely familiar with him, unfortunately.

I did, and she was pretty good. Most energized I'd seen the crowd so far, at least until Broken Social Scene really got going. Definitely better than i expected.

Saw Kendrick at a festival this weekend. I was interesting seeing the audience going from singing every word to GKMC to not giving a shit about stuff off TBAP. I guess GKMC is just more of a crowdpleaser. It made for a weird festival headlining slot though because the energy was all over the place.
I also saw Rejjie Snow (hometown show, everyone there lost their shit), Run The Jewels (fucking great, but only drew a tiny crowd which I was surprised by) and Action Bronson (who I'm not a huge fan of, but knows how to put on a show).
Good weekend all in all but I am kinda done with Irish festivals. Too many drunk teenagers ruining the atmosphere, which hasn't happened at any of the ones I've been to in America, Belgium, Spain or the UK.

Ghost is just a great band. They've got a modern Alice Cooper thing going on, and the Type O Negative vibe of that song has (as far as the intro goes, mostly) was pretty neat.

Music thread, I just went on a spending spree on Bandcamp. Fortunately though, it was all $1/name your price stuff so it actually cost me barely anything.
First up: Sons of London, Russian Roulette.
Perfect indie pop. Has me humming and singing. Haven't heard music that made me feel this teenager-y since Jack's Mannequin. This is not the first band I've liked coming out of Gothenburg. Is this city Sweden's Austin/Portland?
Secondly: Helios, Remembrance.
At the start of this year I listened to the earlier release, Yume, a whole lot. From my few listens I don't like this next album quite as much, but at the price asked... Well, how can you resist? This is minimalist/ambient electronica, very mellow, but super nice to hum along with.
Lastly, Inward Oceans, Paths From Home.
Very sparse, piano-led ambient music. This is the sort of thing I imagine works well with Bandcamp's model. To be honest, it doesn't strike me as the most original music, and the composer probably didn't spend months struggling with it. But it's nice. And he/she's reached a global audience, some of whom are willing to drop an impulsive few bucks on nice music when the mood grabs them. I know this is kind of damning with faint praise, but really, it is worth a listen.
I don't know where he got the scorpions, or how he got them into my mattress.

Anyone know of those?
Also, here are the two tracks i made, in case you wanna listen. I think there's potential (I sometimes hum them to myself), even if it's rough.

These are all the records I bought in 2016. A little more than 1 a month, which is about right. Really happy with all of them, but I'll probably lay off any more American-Primitivism styling a in 2017.
I like this album. Despite being called "1979" it's pretty recent. Ambient and relaxing yet emotive synthy noises, sorta reminds me of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol. II.
For the first time I can remember, my year end Spotify stats were perfectly representative of my favorite albums of 2016, after adding in Blond, which I bought through iTunes. If anybody else loves these 6 albums as much as I do, recommend me some other stuff! Please and thank you.

My favorite song of all time is a Rihanna song. My favorite band with a male lead is Radiohead. My favorite male solo act, Frank. Favorite rapper is Ye, and I've spent more time listening to Bon Iver records than any other artist since 2008. Solange just put out a tremendous album, she isn't really one of my all time favorites but my best friend and I both loved this record.
So 2016 was just a great year for me. 2015 I spent listening to things that had come out in previous years, so I needed these albums. I saw everybody on that list live, with the exception of Frank Ocean, and I honestly couldn't tell you which show was the best. I paid an exorbitant amount for Kanye tickets and it was worth every penny. He always does great shows in Chicago.

I went searching D&D for a [Music] thread but couldn't find a more recent one, so I decided to resurrect this one. RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!
I recently saw 'The Dear Hunter' live with 'Between The Buried and Me' in Philadelphia, and holy crap. They're a progressive rock band that tell a story across all of their albums which are appropriately titled 'Acts 1-5' with different subtitles. Most of the music I listen to is harder rock or metal, EDM, and Rap, so this was a pleasant surprise for me. Well, in short they killed their set so I've been listening to them on repeat since. My favorite acts are 4 and 5, but 2 is also really really good. 1 is too short, and 3 is good but only has a few songs I would call 'hits' on them. 2, 4, and 5 are the important bits of the story, and are easy listens all the way through.
@KoopahTroopah — I'm not sure if he gets a solo set on that tour, but one of my greatest influences and favorite musicians, Gavin Castleton, is the current keyboardist for The Dear Hunter. He has a very diverse catalog, but I think I big part of why he was asked to join TDH is because of his 2009 album Home, which I would recommend to just about anyone interested in narrative-driven "progressive" rock.
But holy shit, this thread has been dead for so long! I've currently got a couple records by Courtney Swain on heavy rotation; she's an absolutely stellar vocalist who primarily works with a "Art-Rock" band called Bent Knee, but on her own she focuses on gorgeous, jazz-inflected tunes that let her flex vocally and create something reminiscent of Robert Wyatt's Old Rottenhat mixed with Kate Bush's Sensual World.

Sick, thanks. I'll have to check it out. I'm listening through the Acts again today at work, and I'm in the middle of Act 3. As a fresh listener, I'm glad Casey took a break from the Acts to work on other music after this one, it's just not as good as the other acts IMO. That being said, In Cauda Venenum, The Tank, and Mustard Gas are all jams.
Gonna use this opportunity to hype up my favorite indie band of the decade, Hop Along, who released an absolutely phenomenal new album today.
The main draw of Hop Along is Frances Quinlan's raspy, acrobatic vocals, which sound like a female Tom Waits or Kurt Cobain.
Here's one great song from each of their 3 albums so far:
It's more melancholy than their previous work, sporting an 'end of the world' kind of ambient vibe, and each song has their unique tone while still feeling like it belongs on the album. I like it, but it's towards the bottom of their list for me, below Mer De Noms/13th Step, but above eMotive. I think after a few listens I could easily grow to like it more. It's just nice to hear new Maynard after all this time. It'll be cool to compare it to the new Tool album whenever that comes out.
Also, J Cole's KDOT released on Friday, which I'm told is a great rap album.

I've been trying to kick listening to Dear Hunter all the time (I finally got the albums in the mail, so I ripped them and stashed the CDs away). I've been jumping through some older metalcore albums that I haven't listened to in a good while. I've been spinning these two albums again lately:
When I first heard of these guys I thought they would be a lame Rise genericore band, but the guitar work on this album is crazy good, and the songs have crushing breakdowns. The vocalist reminds me of old Haste The Day with his inhale screams, and the choruses are catchy as hell. Highly recommend this album. It's short and sweet. I recommend Deliverance, Here's To Letting Go, and For What It's Worth.
More Deathcore than Metalcore on this release, here's another really heavy one. I listened to this and Red. White. Green. back to back for days on end at a time. Super cool Texas pride heavy band. All of the songs have Al Pacino lyrical references and are all named after his movies. Creative time signatures between parts, intricate guitar and drum patterns, and Danny kills it vocally. The band went super downhill after Danny's publicity stunt promoting the third album, but The World Is Ours is a classic core album that I listen to very frequently. I recommend Scarface, Any Given Sunday, and The Devil's Advocate.
Does anyone have any earworm records that they've been spinning frequently lately? I'm open to any genre, I tend to jump around a lot eclectically.
