The tracks not being iconic by themselves isn't really the whole point of his critique though. The implementation kinda sucks though. He even shows that there are good pieces in there like in the Smithonian scene, but which then gets ruined by the narrator.
It's rather the whole process from starting with temp score, always staying on the safe side, and not using the good stuff to its potential.
Actually, thinking about it, part of the reason they aren't going for really memorable themes for everybody is because different composers are working on the films and they don't want to end up having to pay royalties out to eight different composers every time they have more heroes show up in another hero's film.
for one of the more musically illiterate people out there (me) it is really rather unusual if a theme actually grips me and stays with me. Most prominently this was the LOTR movies.
but the premise is unfair. there have been like 20ish Bond movies with one opening and recurring theme used in every single one and you can name it? awesome! everything Star Wars uses that theme. Harry Potter I'll give you.
the marvel movies are not the 20th Bond movie. this is whining at a very high level.
"awesome movies you made, fellas, but where the fuck is my Imperial March? Huh?"
Not gonna get an imperial march unless you hire John Williams. The weird thing is Alan Silvestri apparently scored The Avengers? And he made the goddamn Back to the Future theme.
None of them are spectacular, though the segment noted in the Avengers theme isn't too bad, it inspires the right feelings, just isn't that memorable.
Of course I admit these are my opinions, but I think the latter 4 are probably more recognisable and long lasting than any of the former. This isn't necessarily the artists fault, just what is being asked of them.
This is a little flippant, but when I hear this argument, it comes across as "You hear these songs, and how they're not as memorable as four of the MOST MEMORABLE THEME SONGS OF ALL TIME! What's up with that?"
Those are just easy songs to refer to. But each of them is relevant to their films, while any of the generic action songs of the MCU could be switched to the other films without issue.
Basically, and I do stress I am aware this is my opinion, people have posted a bunch of Iron Man videos on the last few pages, and I still don't know what the Iron Man theme is. Why are we still having to be inspired by a 70s Superman theme?
And to be fair I'll include a film I don't even like. BUt I can recognise this theme.
The Marvel music doesn't have a hook. Ask anyone to hum the music from a movie, even when they do it in that EFAP video, and what they're humming is the hook. That big brassy part that shows up in the middle of the song. The Marvel music is interesting, and it's often in there as a signature soundtrack to a character, but it doesn't have a big hummable hook.
If that signature metal scream comes on in a movie, I know to look for the Winter Soldier, but there's no way in hell I can hum it.

you can't fucking hum at all. (I don't even really like that last one but I can hum it from memory.)
As has been mentioned, it's not that the MCU music is exactly bad, it's that it's poorly implemented. Basically the only time you'll hear the main leitmotif to the movie or character clearly is during the end credits.
Which is what confuses me about people not being able to hum the simpler ones (which are the only ones I included here), because...you do sit through the credits, right? At least to the mid-credits scene? Right?
Those first two are the only ones I think of when I think of great marvel music. The last three boarded me enough that I stopped listening half way through.
every time I try to hum the captain america theme I get about four bars before it turns into the A-Team
the only film music that really sticks in my memory is the stuff from iron man one when he's building/testing the suit, because that stuff was really good

You could stick that in any Fast and Furious fight sequence, you wouldn't know the difference.
Like Conan probably isn't as big a film as the others.

But damn if that isn't some epic music and I think it's distinct and memorable.
Or Robocop, which is probably quite a close song to a superhero theme.

Terminator, although I think the sequel version is better.

Even somehting like this, although I don't know if everyone could as easily associate the film to which it belongs

Or The Thing, which is more subtle, but I recognised it's soundtrack being used in Hateful Eight straight away.

Or Aliens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2lG_69lgFc&index=9&list=PLNwVhFRTji9DfcXU26cE3dGNuPv7eQA2K Although that's not a theme.

This is brilliant, hadn't seen it before.

Mmmmmmmmnope. Able to hum other themes from memory, not able to hum any of these ones. Thesis does not check out.
