My Fiesta this time has been the complete opposite of last time. White Mage/Red Mage/Geomancer so far.

Last time no mages, this time all the mages!

And all White Mages at the start was quite the grind.

XIV on xbone would be awesome. I remember that the thing that was keeping it from happening was: a) xbone players would need to be able to play with everyone else and b) that you wouldn't need a good subscription to play since players would be on SE servers instead of Microsoft, though I'm not sure about that second point as much. Good on MS for being willing to talk.

Nice that they're once again in talks. When the game was releasing Microsoft refused it due to their 'everything must use XBox Live' stance.

A lot of the media and screenshots apparently come from the first couple of hours of the game.

Seems there's still a gigantic chunk that they haven't shown, period.

I'm still thinking we're going to get some Laguna-type dream sequences or something, since they continue to hint that there's a story-based reason for Noctis constantly taking naps. Platinum Demo already confirmed this in some way, so we'll probably get more "out there" sequences every time Noctis goes night-night.

I find his constant napping/sleepiness to be pretty endearing honestly. A lot of it feels like he has complete trust and faith in his compatriots to have his back, so much so that his feeling of security is so strong that he can just nod off.

Plus it's incredibly amusing to me.

It has its own thread, but I felt it was worth informing people here that Final Fantasy XIV is announcing its next expansion this October.

For many people, FFXIV's relaunch was the first act to renew faith in the series. It's the single greatest love letter to the previous titles while standing on its own. It kills me that I haven't renewed my sub to play the new patch, but that Overwatch habit is hard to break.

In any event, I am really excited to see what they've got planned for the next expansion.

I'd like to see a Red Mage tank, myself. Combining speed-casting magic (triggered by taking damage, a la Bravely Default), fencing attacks, and spellblades.

Would not mind Blue Mage at all, though. So many possible moves.

It's how his name is romanized in the JP version.

FFVI probably has the most name changes out of any game: Terra (Tina), Sabin (Mash), Locke (Lock), etc.

And they added a semi-funny nod to that in the GBA version, where a guy in Figaro will mention that the cult of Kefka has a minor schism about how to spell his name.

In that video: uh, did Kefka cause the apocalypse as a special move? That's one hell of a limit break.

Hell, that's not even his special move in FFVI. He just moved a few pillars to do that. That's not a special move, that's feng shui.

I think technically Kefka's special moves are backstabbing and maniacal laughter.

Has it ever been discussed that maybe the designers of FFVI really liked the Joker and just supplanted him in that game with a suitable backstory?

I've logged a bunch more time on FFX-2 now. I'm really starting to dig this game. The initial prologue moments have been the worst the game had to offer (so far). Brother is still terrible but he's barely in it so it isn't ruining the game for me.

But one thing I've noticed is that the difficulty seems really ... uneven. Or maybe inconsistent. So I just did the last bit of Chapter 1 in Killika Village. Out in the woodsy part, most enemies are totally appropriate for my level and it was fine. Then every now and again I'd encounter these massive two armed dudes who did these belly-flop jumps on me. They destroyed me. Every fight against them was a boss fight. They seemed way out of place for my level range. And on top of that, they were really common.

Likewise, in the previous area, I think in Zanarkand Ruins, I kept running into Behemoths while out in the field. Normally I'm fighting like flans and stuff. And then out of nowhere a behemoth shows up and just wrecks my party. When I was on this mission in particular, the random behemoths that showed up in battles were harder than the boss of this area. In fact, I had several game overs while in this section because of the Behemoths.

And one other time this happened, I forget which area I was in, but it had pretty normal enemies for most of it. And then sometimes I encountered these Dual Horns, which were just a little too much to be a common enemy in the area I was in and the level I was at.

Is the whole game like this? Where most common enemies in an area are appropriate for your level, and then there's like one outlier enemy who just wrecks you? Because I've run into this problem 3 times now in 3 different zones.

A lot of the difficulty is very situational, that is it depends a bunch on how you're rolling your party. Much like with FFV, some party setups will be very strong against certain enemies / bosses and weak to others.

In particular, the game has the FFXII problem where most abilities have to activate sequentially instead of simultaneously, but basic attacks can happen simultaneously (including during ability activation). This can do really wonky things to the difficulty depending on the situation. If you're using an ability-heavy party against basic attack enemies, you'll need the battle speed set as low as possible; at higher speeds enemies will get lots more turns versus yours. Similarly if you're against ability-using enemies, it can be handy to have 1 character using abilities (to force the enemy to sometimes halt) while having the other two party members spam attacks (with battle speed set to maximum).

All that said, if you do the optional stuff in every chapter in order by difficulty (Guide Dang-It), the difficulty of almost everything should be very low due to all the extra levels you'll be picking up. Additionally, you can grind out abilities something fierce. You get AP every time you use an ability in battle, and you can get up to 100 AP (!) per battle in this way. That means if you use a bunch of free abilities that don't kill the enemy, you can sit and grind abilities way above your level grade. Alchemist is your first stop if you want to try this, because free Ethers are civilization (as they'll let you then restore MP to every other class that only has MP abilities, not to mention healing up the enemy for grinding classes that only have damaging abilities as options).

Note that these exploits and mechanisms can have the side effect of making the game less fun if you prefer to be challenged, so be careful with their application. If it's just certain common enemies that are giving you fits, note that they usually have more status vulnerabilities than the bosses, so you may try getting use out of the niche options (gravity-type damage effects, blind/silence/sleep/insta-KO, etc). There may be a trick to each one that you're missing.

Also, there's the whole Oversoul thing. Is that factoring in? Because many Oversoul enemies are a lot tougher than the local boss and can be plain unbeatable with a party at standard levels for the area.

Though, I just realized you're still in Chapter 1, so really none of this should be happening to you. Did you do any of the optional stuff in Ch1? If you're just going straight to the main mission areas then yeah things are going to be harder overall due to your lower levels. It's an exciting way to play it, but it can make your first playthrough stressful and difficult. It's been awhile since I've done it this way, so I did a little digging to see if there was anything about the Behemoths specifically that you mentioned. Here's what one guide says:
One of more powerful fiends, this guy will make you run for your lives faster than eating Behemoth beefsteak. RGF is rather simple - attack pattern of three 'swipe'-s, followed by Thundara - all at the girl with highest current HP. Employ Sentinel if you can bother enough. For extra challenge berserk it and see the power of Uppercuts which will send you flying into next Sunday. Slowing the guy down isn't a shabby idea.

OSF is interesting as well, as its AI is once again pinned on the girl with highest current HP. Against her it will use [Eyeing (girl)...], followed by three 'swipe'-s, or three Thundaras. Slow it down or feel the KO.
So yeah, abusing the AI pattern means you can trivially tank it (highest HP always on defense and receiving targeted heals, kill with third party member), but failing to do so will probably get you killed.

Ahh ok. That's good information. I did not pick up on the fact that the behemoths were attacking in a pattern like that. I was just working off the assumption that it was random targeting like everything else.

I mean, I got through the area. I'm on chapter 2 now. But it was pretty tough going there for a while.

Final Fantasy VII Monopoly Announced for April 2017

Merchoid, the videogame merchandise specialist, has announced that Final Fantasy VII Monopoly will be released in April 2017. The game will be modeled on the classic, fast dealing property trading game, but will incorporate characters, locations and lore from the Final Fantasy VII game, originally released in 1997. The Final Fantasy VII Monopoly game is available to preorder first from Merchoid for £34.99/€51.99/$49.99.

Final Fantasy VII Monopoly continues in the footsteps of previous videogame themed Monopoly games including Fallout, Halo and Assassin's Creed. Merchoid's Community Manager Jessica Adams says "It's every family's favourite board game in a Final Fantasy VII theme, so it will feature Cloud, Aeris, Sephiroth and all your favourite characters and locations. Whether your plans are to buy housing for the people or build a Mako reactor plant, you'll soon discover the real nature of Sephiroth's evil is the extortionate amount of rent he charges."

The initial artwork (which is subject to change) features Cloud, Aeris, Sephiroth. Cid, Tifa, Barrett, Sephiroth and Cait Sith. More details of the game, including images of the board, pieces and cards will be revealed soon.

A date has not yet been officially announced for the highly anticipated PS4 Final Fantasy VII: Remake; the Final Fantasy VII Monopoly game has been scheduled for release on Tuesday 11th April 2017. Final Fantasy VII Monopoly will be exclusively available to online retailers and is available to order first from Merchoid.com.

    Key product points:

    • Monopoly game based on Final Fantasy VII
    • Features characters, locations and lore from Final Fantasy VII
    • Available to preorder first from Merchoid.com
    • Available for £34.99/€51,99/$49.99

    .......didn't see that coming.

I've been saying that a lot with FFVII lately.
