Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer shooter with objective based modes which pits two teams of 6 players against each other. The game is designed around several classes where each character has unique abilities, with a cartoon art style similar to that found in Team Fortress 2 or in Pixar Animation movies.

Backstory -

Welcome to Overwatch™ Soldiers. Scientists. Adventurers. Oddities. In a time of global crisis, an international task force of heroes banded together to restore peace to a war-torn world: OVERWATCH.

It ended the crisis and helped to maintain peace in the decades that followed, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery. But after many years, Overwatch's influence waned, and it was eventually disbanded. Overwatch is gone… but the world still needs heroes.

Currently Announced Heroes -

Overwatch features a wide array of unique heroes, ranging from a time-jumping adventurer, to an armored, rocket-hammer-wielding warrior, to a transcendent robot monk. Every hero plays differently, and mastering their abilities is the key to unlocking their potential. No two heroes are the same. Whether you're engaging in combat on the front line, providing defensive cover with your energy shield, or supporting your allies by amplifying their damage, every hero's abilities are designed to be effective as part of a team. Learning to utilize your abilities in concert with your teammates' is the key to victory.

All characters to be nerfed. In fact, Blizzard has a deal with Nerf so all ammunition in game are Nerf balls or suction cup arrows.

question regarding symmetra, do you lose her buff if she switches characters? like at the beginning of a match, does it make sense for someone to choose symettra, buff everyone on the team, and then switch to literally any character more useful than her?

Her shields, sentries and teleporter all go away if you switch.

    edit: as for useful?

I am very interested in their release schedule for content.

since the characters and maps will be free woot... how exactly are they going to monetize the game though? I dont have a problem with dlc if its cosmetic in nature and, frankly i feel like that type of content helps to grow the community.

I'm pretty sure the idea is not to fragment the playerbase (which other games have done). Monetization comes from selling lootboxes, which don't really affect gameplay in any meaningful way.

Blizzard also released a Diablo II patch 10 years after release, so they know about long-term support.

I am very interested in their release schedule for content.

since the characters and maps will be free woot... how exactly are they going to monetize the game though? I dont have a problem with dlc if its cosmetic in nature and, frankly i feel like that type of content helps to grow the community.

Well first you have to buy the game. That's the main source of monetization. It's an old strategy, but it still works.

Secondly you can buy loot boxes for cosmetic stuff.

Thirdly, we'll likely get new maps/heroes in expansions to the game (which you'll buy)

the game's already monetized; you have to buy it to play it

it's a model which seems to work just fine for them

and I don't think they've said that you'll be able to spend money on anything in-game yet

I'm pretty sure the idea is not to fragment the playerbase (which other games have done). Monetization comes from selling lootboxes, which don't really affect gameplay in any meaningful way.

Blizzard also released a Diablo II patch 10 years after release, so they know about long-term support.

They also haven't switched of an online game yet. Their long term track record is amazing.

As for money, maybe there'll be a sort of expansion down the road? I don't know how people would feel about that though.

I'd be okay with a paid expansion after like.. 2-3 years of free content?

But if the game can generate enough revenue to keep strong from only loot boxes, even better!

Blizzard has learned a lot about monetizing stuff that doesn't affect play. I would see them selling more skins, taunts, sprays, etc through currency. I'm ok with this.

Personally I would rather pay for yearly expansions than rely on microtransactions to dictate how much 'free' content is produced.

Problem is the majority of the userbase are completely against the idea of any paid content like maps or heroes, which is generally the kind of content that likely be in the Blizzard expansions. Though I wonder if they might eventually do expansions that are basically single-player or co-op content that basically won't affect PVP.

No I. Splitting player bases can mean either limited pools of players to draw on, or DLC no one plays when the game starts getting into late life.

Blizzard's commitment to not fragmenting its playerbase by selling content makes regular expansions both unlikely, and not sound like a particularly attractive alternative to selling cosmetics.

At some point "yearly expansions" basically just sounds like EA's battlefield DLC model or something. I'm not actually convinced Blizzard needs to sell expansions at all, especially if the game can hit the huge critical playerbase that it's looking like it will.

Blizzard has shown they can release expansions in their games without total destruction of their playerbase. It's not something I am worried about.

I'd wager its only because stuff like WoW essentially dies for you unless you purchase the next xpac. Even if you don't buy the xpac the game moves on. WoW expansions are basically periodic increases in your monthly sub.

Were as a shooter without a personal progression system means you could keep playing the original heroes or maps. Your BF4 experience never really changed as an individual if you never purchased any DLC, but it hurts the community as a whole by dividing up players. There's less incentive for each player to pay for the DLC.

Yeah they aren't new to this concept at all. I would love for them to just offer free maps and heroes over time, but I don't know if the lootbox aspect will be sufficient for that. So my guess it that stuff like that will be in an expansion every few years (not a fan of yearly expansions either)

They can't really go with the LoL model since you can't buy heroes, just skins, so I think that would limit additional content.

Honestly I can see them going either way on this one. Depends a lot on who effective the lootbox stuff is.

I think Overwatch is different from Blizzard's past games in some pretty key ways that make it less suitable for expansions.

WoW and Diablo and Starcraft don't really have fragmented playerbases because you're either playing the newest stuff or you're not playing at all.

Hearthstone is its own weird animal based on physical TCG business models from the 90's.

Overwatch is a matchmade team based game that is strictly competitive, and when you look at the neighbors in this space you see stuff like MOBAs and TF2 and CSGO, games that are either f2p or very aggressively priced. What's Blizzard going to sell in an expansion pack that won't make them look horrible next to its competition?

Optional coop modes could be super cool expansions too. Taking on AI hordes, defeating some big Boss thing, or getting through map hazards or something like that. Added content to make money from without harming the actual PVP stuff.

For Symmetra, the problem I had with her initially was 100% that they had her with healers, when she is definitely more of a builder. Yeah, she can put shields on folks, but being able to make strings of turrets in odd places and make a teleporter is WAY more important than that shield buff. The fact that she can also be excellent just at straight-up fighting sure doesn't hurt.

Really really did not like her until the random hero mode stuck me as her a few times on matches I would not have tried her, and I was amazed at how great she can be.

I find she's absolutely the best with another healer, especially Lucio. Honestly, all three support heroes pair with Lucio so well, I always encouraged it during matches with randoms. Often got takers too, and won because of it.

Symm's shields with Lucio's constant heals are the best. I also feel the same with Zennyata combined with Lucio.

    Damnit, Lucio MVP.

    Fantastic

Solo adventures sound good in theory.... but then I imagine two updates in a row that add adventures for heroes I don't like, and all that dev time that could have gone towards new multiplayer maps/heroes/modes. I would totally be ok with Blizzard focusing on multi only and having some absurd amount of maps/heroes years down the line.

  • ScosglenScosglen Registered User regular
I very much doubt the game will ever have substantial single-player content. Overwatch is at its core a team game, if we ever see PvE content it will probably be in the form of some kind of cooperative horde mode or something of that ilk.

If they did this I would put this game near the top of my list all time.

I love the characters and the backgrounds for them, if they could make solid adventures out of it that would be glorious.

Different artists. Robert Brooks did the first and third, don't remember who did the second, and now a new artist did the fourth.

Very clean, almost sterile work, which I guess fits the character.
