The Garlean Empire called down the Red Moon and forever changed the face of Eorzea when Dalamud came crashing down. The imprisoned Elder Primal Bahamut broke free of his crimson prison and, despite the efforts of Warriors of Light and Scions alike, rained hellfire down upon the continent, forever changing the landscape and the lives of those who called Eorzea home.

Louisoix Leveilleur sacrificed himself to propel the Warriors of Light into the future to protect them from the Calamity above. His last efforts mortally wounded Bahamut and saved Eorzea for total annihilation. 5 years later the Warriors of Light reappear in the land and take up arms against threats both new and old. Ancient Primals are summoned and defeated, The Garlean threat is temporarily stayed, and Bahamut is finally defeated completely. However a new peril faces the Alliance from within, and new threats rear their ancient heads from without in the neighboring City-State of Ishgard. As the Warriors of Light ready themselves against this new challenge, we wait breathlessly in anticipation, gazing ever Heavensward.

Final Fantasy XIV has been out for almost three years and has been a resounding success in a market saturated with forgettable and broken MMOs both new and old. Square Enix has has delivered a rich, vibrant world, with interesting stories and characters, challenges to be conquered, crafts to be created, baubles to be collected, and generally a large variety of activities from the most casual of players to the most hardcore. With the inclusion of the Golden Saucer we also now have Chocobo Racing and Triple Triad among a host of other side activities for players to enjoy.

Every ~3 months there is a new content patch which adds new dungeons, advances the main storyline, epic fights, side quests, humorous stories, and fun activities for all to enjoy. In between these massive patches (and they are quite huge) are quality of life updates, and smaller content patches to keep players constantly coming back for more. There are few MMOs in the history of the genre that have released content of this quality and at this pace.

Patch cadence follows an odd/even tick/tock cycle with every even number patch adding new high-end 8 player party PvE raid content and every odd numbered patch delivering the less intensive 24-man raid content. Between every major patch is at least one minor patch which focuses on quality of life improvements as well as additional minor content.

Since the game came out in 2013, we have had a total of 8 major content patches and one Expansion.

The Heavensward Expansion was released June 23rd, 2015 and content it added to the base game included (and not limited to):
  • 7 new massive zones all 50-100% larger than existing zones
  • Flying mounts
  • Free Company Airships
  • 3 new Jobs
  • 2 new Primal encounters
  • New Endgame raid with Alexander: Gordias
  • 50+ hours of Story content
  • Level cap increase to 60
  • Crafting Specializations
  • New zones designed around flying
  • 8 new 4 player dungeons

- Player Races
TiO3QkM.png
Warning: Lore heavy. Please be aware that there are little differences with regards to stats between the races. At most you are looking at around 3-5 points difference compared to current stat totals totalling around 1300 for primary stats

Hyur: <Naming conventions>
bw4YPnO.png
Over the course of some one thousand years and three great migratory waves, the Hyur have come to be the most populous of the civilized races in Eorzea. Compared to the others, theirs is an average physique, both in terms of height and build. The Hyur champion personal freedom and liberty, and their espousal of an eclectic variety of languages and traditions is a legacy of their diverse heritage?as is their resulting lack of a unified cultural identity.

The Hyur are divided into the Midlanders and the Highlanders.

Miqo'te: <Naming conventions>
Irvdaqh.png
Though their presence in Eorzea is lesser than that of the other races, the Miqo'te are easily distinguished by their large, projecting ears and restless, feline tails. The ancestors of this line first made their way to the realm during the Age of Endless Frost in the Fifth Umbral Era, traversing frozen seas in pursuit of the wildlife upon which they subsisted. Instinctual territoriality causes many among them to lead solitary lifestyles. Males in particular are said to shy from contact with others.

They are divided into the Seekers of the Sun, and the Keepers of the Moon.

Elezen: <Naming conventions>
r6NSyXE.png
The Elezen are a characteristically tall people, long of limb and slender of build. They are also possessed of a somewhat extended lifespan in comparison to the Hyur. The Elezen once claimed sole dominion over Eorzea, their presence predating that of the other races, and, as such, developed a heightened sense of honor and pride. In years past, the Hyur migration into Elezen lands sparked bitter conflict. At present, however, the mutual understanding reached between the two races allows them to work towards mutual peace and prosperity.

The Elezen are divided into the Wildwood, and the Duskwight.

Roegadyns: <Naming conventions>
RA4zB3L.png
The Roegadyn are easily identified by their massive, muscular frames. They are descended from a maritime people that roamed the northern seas, though many of their ancestors turned their longships south to brave the crossing into Eorzean waters. Often considered a barbaric race, the fiercely competitive Roegadyn are also known for their compassion and unswerving loyalty. Many of the greatest warriors in history were born of Roegadyn stock.

The Roegadyn are divided into the Sea Wolves, and the Hellsguard.

Lalafells: <Naming conventions>
C65FkC7.png
The Lalafell are a folk both rotund and diminutive. Small by any race's standards and possessed of a childlike countenance, it proves difficult for non-Lalafell to gauge an individual's age with any degree of accuracy. Originally an agricultural people inhabiting the fertile islands of the south seas, they found their way to Eorzea via the burgeoning trade routes. Lalafell are welcoming of outsiders, and share prosperous relations with all of the other races of Eorzea.

The Lalafell are divided into the Plainsfolk and the Dunesfolk.

Au Ra:
20141221045635a0dz1r6j5seg13cj.jpg
The curved horns and beautifully patterned scales that characterize the Au Ra oft five rise to the speculation that this Hyur-like race native to the Far Eastern continent of Othard are, in fact, the progeny of dragons. This, however, has long been disputed, with scholars citing several distinct differences in the two races as evidence of decidedly dissimilar roots - the first and foremost being the enhanced hearing and spacial recognition granted by an Au Ra's cranial projections (traits not attributed to draconian horns), and the second being the gross disproportion in body mass between Auri males and females (again, a trait widely unseen in dragons).

The Aura are divided into the Raen and the Xaela tribes.

- Classes
  • Disciples of War (DoW)
    • Gladiator (GLA)
    • Pugilist (PUG)
    • Marauder (MRD)
    • Lancer (LNC)
    • Archer (ARC)
    • Rogue (ROG)
  • Disciples of Magic (DoM)
    • Conjurer (CNJ)
    • Thaumaturge (THM)
    • Arcanist (ACN)
  • Disciples of the Hand (DoH)
    • Carpenter (CRP)
    • Blacksmith (BSM)
    • Armorer (ARM)
    • Goldsmith (GSM)
    • Leatherworker (LTW)
    • Weaver (WVR)

    • Culinarian (CUL)
  • Disciples of the Land (DoL)
    • Miner (MIN)
    • Botanist (BTN)
    • Fisher (FSH)

With the exception of Rogue, the player must select a DoW/DoM class as their initial class, which will also set their 'origin' city-state
All classes become available after completing a Main Scenario quest around level 10.

- Jobs
About the Armoury System:
In Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn/Heavenward, a single player character can assume any class or job via the Armoury System provided they have the class or job unlocked and have equipped the appropriate main-hand weapon/tool and soul crystal if utilizing a job. All levels and experience points are tracked on a per-class basis.

Unlocking the Armoury System requires completion of a Main Scenario quest, available at level 10 as well as the starting class' level 10 quest. Additional classes are unlocked by speaking to the respective class' receptionist at the appropriate guild hall.

The armoury system also lends itself in a curious manner with regards to abilities. Many class abilities can be used by other classes and jobs, which are then known as cross-class abilities. Classes have a greater selection as they can select almost any other cross-class ability however jobs are restricted to the cross-class abilities provided by two other classes which are related to their role. This means that a Lancer can cross-class the Conjurer's "Cure" ability so long as the player has unlocked the ability as a Conjurer. This does not mean that cross-class abilities will be available to all classes. A Lancer for example cannot cross-class any offensive spells such as Blizzard II and neither can a Thaumaturge cross-class the Marauder's weaponskill, Fracture.
Cross-class abilities are not limited to combat; Disciples of Hand have their own cross-class ability selection as well as Disciples of Land. High-end content is designed with the assumption that players have access to all available cross-class abilities suited to their job or class.

Jobs are unlocked in a different manner. Players must have completed the level 30 "sponsor" class quest plus have at least level 15 in a secondary class appropriate to the desired job. In the case of the Paladin, players must have completed the level 30 Gladiator quest as well as being at least level 15 as a Marauder. Once these pre-requisites are met, a quest to unlock the job will become available. Jobs are selected via the armoury system by equipping the appropriate Soul Crystal in addition to the appropriate weapon. All end-game PvE content is designed with the assumption that players will be using the role specialised Jobs rather than the base Disciple of War/Magic classes.

Heavensward jobs are unlocked in a different manner. The only pre-requisite is having access to the Heavensward city-state of Ishgard, which itself requires completion of the 2.55 Main Scenario quests. There are no base classes, or secondary classes to the Heavensward jobs. However, these jobs should be considered as 'advanced' jobs within their respective role so it will be assumed that the player has appropriate cross-class skills available.

    What's all these stats do?
Combat stats are divided into two types: Primary and Secondary stats
For the sake of brevity, only the basic outline will be covered. Exceptions and "buts" which apply to high-end PvE content will not be mentioned due to added complexity and if you're at the point of optimising at that level, this info isn't for you.

Primary stats include Strength, Dexterity, Intellect, Mind and Vitality. All of these stats can be allocated with your bonus points for levelling up.
Secondary stats include Accuracy, Critical Hit, Determination, Parry, Skill Speed, Spell Speed and Piety.
A "tertiary" stat is weapon damage. Weapon damage is king and any increase will make a very significant impact on your effectiveness.

Each combat class/job will have a preferred primary stat. For tanks, this is Vitality. Melee DPS except Rogues/Ninjas will favor Strength. Ranged physical DPS and Rogues/Ninjas want Dexterity. Casters will want Intellect and finally Healers want Mind. The primary stats will have a significant effect on all your abilities.

Secondary stats are a fair bit more complicated.
Accuracy - Increases the chance to hit a target. Generally for most content, you do not need to worry too much about this stat. For those engaging in high-end PvE content like EX Primals and Raids, this is a vitally important stat up to a certain point.
Critical Hit - The most desired secondary stat under the current stat design. Virtually all jobs like this secondary stat as it has the greatest effect on performance outside the primary stat and weapon damage.
Determination - Used to be the most preferred secondary stat. Has taken a back seat to critical hit and it occupies a 'safe place holder' role on gear itemisation. Not the best, but at the same time, can't go too wrong with it. Determination simply increases the effect of skills, spells and abilities.
Parry - Universally reviled. Though it's supposed to be a tank stat to assist with damage mitigation, it has very poor effects bordering on worthless. Considered to be a waste of secondary stats.
Skill Speed - Rather complex stat. It affects Damage over Time effects at around the same potency as Determination but has other effects in reducing the GCD of weaponskills. Advanced players who are aiming at optimising their play will seek certain amounts of skill speed. Value is dependant on job.
Spell Speed - Similar to Skill Speed, this stat affects the cast time and the GCD of spells. Black Mages will sell their own mothers for more spell speed and as a result, the stat occupies a value higher than crit for them. It's still a good stat for any other caster, including healers as it also affects periodic effects such as Damage over Time effects and Heal over Time effects.
Piety - A stat for healers. Piety increases the amount of MP a character has, which also affects the rate which MP regenerates as that value is fixed at 2% every 3 seconds during combat. The amount of piety targeted by healers is a personal preference based on play style, targeted content as well as job. This is the only secondary stat that can have bonus attribute points allocated to it. Do not do this.

The Thread is dead, long live the Thread!

Well, after a slow start, between esoterics and drops from Neverreap, I hit ilevel 170 over the weekend and completed Pharos Sirius (hard) and Saint Mocianne's Arboretum. Got another drop from there, and another eso piece has got me up to 177. Almost enough to continue the MSQ (antitower).

I have to say its kind of a weird speed bump to place here, but I guess for those that got to this point on the patch it debuted, it wasn't much of speed bump. Though it was kind of weird to just go into these dungeons, as a tank barely making the requirements, and having my other party members go "just pull the whole lot of 'em".

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. ~ Terry Pratchett

Catching up on the story that's been added since I last left the game, and I'm reminded of just how good a job they do with the concept of your character being "the chosen hero".

I just love how they double-down on the concept and just have you revel in your role in the story as the ultimate hero, the one recognized far and wide, the chosen one, etc in increasingly awesome moments. Case in point the Grand Melee quest where you
have a one-on-one fight with Raubahn, and everyone else is just gawking over the sheer badassedry on display

Think it's safe to say with utmost certainty that FFXIV has the best writing in the entire series, and possibly JRPGs period.

Stayed up way too late running PotD with a buddy just coming back to the game.

The difference between a pug and premade is so ridiculous. In a full premade we're actively trying to murder each other (you know, without wiping), and in a pug it's a fight to save the YOLO tank from his own idiocy.

    sounds about right.

Though I think by this point, every one of my solo match party PotD runs this weekend were myself as Conj (though now I've got it to 30 so WHM), another healer, and two ranged dps. Made for pretty easy runs, to be honest.

That's what I generally do, but I had a save on my Bard from running with my friend who was leveling AST. In a premade it doesn't really matter since everything just explodes. (Sometimes even literally)

It was my first experience with running with three pugs, usually it's a group of two or three of us picking up a random or two.

Coincidentally, it was also my first experience using Phoenix Downs and the rez stone Cairn thing.

I believe that me and my fiancée have had this discussion several times in PotD:

"Should we go save the stupid tank from himself?"
    "Why?"

The fact Never Reap is on a remote island is actually making me have to unlock flying. How dare they.

Also slowly adjusting to end game a little. I feel like once I'm over the hump and start unlocking more stuff than 'maybe run ARF another five times because it's efficient' I'll be more on board with the whole deal.

I'm also a masochist who really, really wants Deneb/Sphere of the Last Heir for glamour purposes. So uh, fuck me.

Yeah, I think the likely end result is I do the first step to get Deneb for glamour purposes and then urgh, run PotD for a weapon.

The more I think about just how badly designed PotD is the more I kinda hate it. Someone asked me why I didn't like it yesterday and it basically turned into a twenty minute rant about basic rogue like design bits and how to make randomly generated content not suck a bad of dicks.

Likey they got it so wrong that it astounds me it's content from the same team as the rest of the game.

Roguelikes aren't really Squeenix's strong suit I would say. Not a genre of RPG they've been involved with much. There's a procedural design nuance there that they aren't acquainted with yet.

So I can believe it when the Japanese devs see a good idea on paper leaning towards that kind of play but don't really have a good handle on how it works or why and what the best way to implement it into their existing game would be. So they give us a bare bones version of a roguelike experience.

To be fair, modern MMOs weren't their strong suit either not too long ago.

  • Albino BunnyAlbino Bunny Jackie Registered User regular
Yeah, you can absolutely tell they weren't really sure what to do with it other than 'uuuuh, traps' but I looked up what XI's equivelent is (Nyzal island or something?) and that immediately sounded better because it was structured as 5 floors per run with each floor having a different objective similar to the stuff ME3's multiplayer stuff. Short dives with more going on are much, much better than these hour long slogs with no actual threats outside of accidentally stepping on an invisible trap at the wrong time.

I'm super curious where they go with it but I really, deeply hope that they spend time making 1-50 fun before they release more floors.

Which they are getting better at, as they will probably get better at designing PotD to be a better experience, roguelike or otherwise. Will just take them time to sort through the feedback and decide what to do next.

I think its better (or at least a more optimistic) way to think about the first 50 levels of PotD as a proof of concept/test run of the idea, since they haven't done anything like this before in FF14, to see the interest/reaction of the playerbase. They've already announced that they plan to have another 150 levels "soon" (I forget if they said next patch or not), and I'd certainly expect them to add more bells and whistles and whatnot when they add on more levels.

Yeah but I honestly think the core mechanics they have like the Pomanders, spawning system, traps and format are all bad.

Which is why just adding 150 floors with more bells and whistles won't be a fix so much as duct taping over the hole in the window.

Yeah but I honestly think the core mechanics they have like the Pomanders, spawning system, traps and format are all bad.

What do you mean by format? And what do you not like about Pomanders?

Roguelikes aren't really Squeenix's strong suit I would say. Not a genre of RPG they've been involved with much. There's a procedural design nuance there that they aren't acquainted with yet.

Man, they've had rogue like experience as far back as Chocobo's Dungeon on the PS1.

The one on the Wii was a much better design for that sort of thing than the POTD.

Maybe experience in turn-based roguelikes doesn't carry over as well to adding it to a real time MMO, but...

I have no problem with Palace

it is infinitely preferable to me over daily roulettes as someone who primarily plays a DPS job to have someplace that gives a nice Tomestone bounty, has no queue time, and has a low threshold of effort required

I haven't tried the Palace yet, but before it came out I vaguely remember hearing something about being able to do it solo (or with less than 4 players) and that it would scale down appropriately.

Is that a thing that happens? I don't think I've seen anyone mention soloing since it actually released.

No. Some classes can solo 1-10, maybe 11-20.

Soloing does happen, though from what I read about it, it can be a bit dicey early on depending on the class because of max HP and traps/exploding chests. So bosses also have some dps checks (even scaled down) which maybe difficult depending on class and number of upgrades you have. I'm duoing with a friend, and except for some dumb mistakes on our part, we haven't had too bad a time, but we're only to floor 30.

Are you sure? I haven't tried it myself, but I've seen several guides/walkthroughs about soloing:

I've been spamming 1-10 for leveling. In the mid 40s, you pull down 120k for 15 minutes of work, and the variance between a good and bad group is like +/-3 minutes. Plus, instaqueues for DPS and the big XP isn't restricted like leveling roulette.

Is there a random drop rate on the medals you need to get the Youkai minions?

It is Costa Del Sol just not in one of the areas that work for this?

The regular medals for collecting pets are 100% if you are wearing the watch, but only zones that can also drop legendary medals are eligible (can't remember if Costa Del Sol is one of these or not, but I know stuff like Coerthas doesn't work since no legendary medals drop there). You also have to get at least a Silver rating to qualify.

The Legendary Medals for the weapons require the applicable pet to be summoned (but do not require the watch), and must be in one of that pet's 3 specific zones (listed in the journal they give you), and seem to have a 25-33% drop chance.

I've got all the pets, but have still been wearing the watch while collecting legendary medals just in case they do the sensible thing and eventually patch in to allow regular medals to be converted to legendary at a 10:1 ratio or something.

Heh. Maybe I'll equip my arr relic weapon. See if I can get the animas or the leg medals first.

That's what I've been doing. So far I've almost got a third Yo-kai weapon and enough atmas from two zones to upgrade every ARR relic.

It got so much easier once I got to that point with my SMN. Titan-Egi, you so good.

    Hmm.

Do we know when the next patch or seasonal event is due? I'm suddenly feeling kind of tired of the current content; it all feels either like stuff I've done a thousand times, or stuff I'm not nearly ready to try and do until I grind out gear or levels. My dailies feel a bit like a chore, and I am not equipped to do other stuff, like level 60 crafting.

  • TakelTakel Registered User regular
I'm actually itching for details about 3.4. We're about due for information in regards to that patch and there's no way we're supposed to wait until the 14 hour anniversary broadcast for info since that's like a month away and 3.4 should be due in about a month or so going by the usual patch cadence.

Personally I'm preparing for 3.4 which means rebuilding my basic materials stockpile as well as stocking up on materia and materials for max potions and top end foods. So yeah, lots of gathering, blue scrip crafting and working on old beast tribe reps.

Getting up to speed with crafting isn't too bad now. You just have to be able to set a realistic end point for yourself, then work towards it.
    The gear progression is now:
Get i170 Carbonweave crafted/get i180 blue scrip gear
    Upgrade body/main hand i180 to i200
Possibly upgrade a few more pieces depending on your accessories
Start crafting the Ironworks stuff? Or continue with the i200 augmented pieces

You don't need to be hopping through all the specialists and make all the Ironworks stuff yourself. Only vain, insane nutters like yours truly will have the resources to do that. But at the very least, understand that the mainhand and body crafted pieces are very difficult to get to be better than the i200 augmented stuff, so that's always an option.
Heck, aside from accessories and the off-hands, full augmented should be completely viable which is a massive reduction in the cost of melding if you can stand only having your specialists geared
