This felt like part one of a two parter.

URGENT QUESTION: I haven't seen last week's episode, Book Buddies. But they always play last week's episode after the new one, so I could do that. The question is, is last week's episode important to watch BEFORE the new one or am I good?

Man when the butterflies coalesce into Rose and i can't tell if she's disapproving or just cold and angry

I took it as him just being scared of being like her. His picture of her had changed, now he doesn't know if he wants to be like her. She's the source of his anxiety, deep down.

I fucked up royally once (everybody does) when I was a teen, and its just the worst when your dad says, "I'm not angry. Im just disappointed..."
That hurts so much worse.
It's horrible that Steven has grown up with this perfect vision of his mom to have it torn down just as he's discovering that there are shades of gray, that good people can want and do bad things, and that you can't save everyone from themselves.
Basically he's discovered this just as he's having to make these same decisions. It's heartbreaking, he's losing his innocence.

Well:
Learning your parents are people, with flaws, who may have done things they regret in the past... is part of growing up. The bad thing is she's not around so they can talk about it.
We're dealing with Steven going through some shit. Especially after its become more and more apparent that he's basically become the support structure for an entire town, as well as the crystal gems.
That song was nails on a chalkboard horrible for me when Garnet was singing. Gave me a headache it sounded so awful. I've loved all the songs but this and Dear Old Dad.
I certainly didnt quite think it'd be doing so damn well at portraying such serious and applicable issues with grace and respect. This show is something truly special.
This episode in particular hit home for me, and did so so very well. Can't wait to see what else is in store.
very good episode of the cartoon, "steven universe"
should help introduce a lot of kids to the basic principles of cognitive behavioral therapy
This episode felt more like a "kid's show" than usual, in a good way. I get the sense from interviews that Rebecca and crew consider it their responsibility to use the show to teach children important life lessons. I like the idea of an episode like this helping to make some kid's life better.

Mindful Education
Exactly. He's been through a lot in the last 5-6 episodes, and it's definitely taken its toll on him. The worldview that he can fix everything if he just believes hard enough in others and does his best to be kind to them is falling apart in the face of three specific examples, and he's realizing that sometimes the choices he has to make aren't so easy. I'm glad they're actually having him confront his feelings about his actions, and not just waving it off or assuming they have no effect on him. This is literally him growing up. And Garnet makes for a good teacher in this regard.
Also, Estelle's high range is nowhere near as good as her lower spoken range, which was disappointing, but Stevonnie actually has a rather lovely voice and the two blended well.
Also also, loved the call back by Garnet. "Hold the phone. Now give the phone to me." Her two-sided sign was great too.

Steven tells Greg the same thing when they're composing songs about Lapis.

Rose is a major source of anxiety for him. The butterflies represent anxiety.
He is both scared of not living up to her/being enough like her and now he is scared because she might not be as perfect as he thought. Either one is major anxiety for Steven. She could also represent his fear of having to eventually shatter someone, as everyone else from his butterflies represented someone that he could not save and he is now coming to grips with the fact that Rose actually had to shatter someone. And because he has come to grips with multiple cases of "could not save-itis" he is undoubtedly afraid of the scenario where he will have to shatter someone for the greater good.
