My sister and her boyfriend sometimes play games with another couple. They really like Small World and Catan and she wants to know a couple more games to try. Recommending games is really hard you guys!

Ask them what they like about those games and recommend based on that. Do they like the trading aspects of Catan, or the dice rolling, or the feeling of building your own economic engine? Do they like the area control strategy of small world, or the head to head conflict, or do they just enjoy the random powers?

Are the people they want to play with brand new to board games or experienced? How large do they expect the group to be?

Gotta consider all that to give a really precise recommendation, but you can always just suggest the classics like resistance, king of new York/tokyo, dominion etc.

If they like Catan, they might like Machi Koro. I'd recommend the Bright Lights/Big City version (from Target?), since that teaches you the tiered and limited purchasing grid version by default, and it has a couple of catch-up mechanics.

Ticket to Ride, Takenoko, and Takido spring to mind - in that order.

Ticket to Ride is usually a fairly safe bet as a gateway game. If they're looking for a little more depth & complexity, my family also enjoys 7 Wonders, especially because the simultaneous play makes for relatively short game rounds and you're more likely to experiment with different strategies if there's not a huge time investment.

Aside from Carcassonne, Dominion was also a game that got us more into the hobbby but it's been supplated by Splendor lately as a simple but satisfying game to teach newcomers.

Not one I'd heard of before. Looks interesting, and it is something I would play - but the BGG entry mentions player elimination and push-your-luck mechanics.
Those are not usually mechanics I think of as offering an enjoyable experience for two couples.

Anyone have evolution or evolution climate change and can give their thoughts on them? I think there's a card game based version as well? I recall having it on my "to investigate" list a while ago but real life dictated that I couldn't get it at the time so it fell by the wayside and to be perfectly honest, I can't really recall anything about WHY I thought it looked fun just that it did.

It's a tough game to teach. I always do each side separately. Emphasize the role playing aspect, and not being able to communicate how much money you have. Point out that maids can give you a bunch of points, especially if you can get them early. I find that my players always screw up the band rules, too. Point out that unbranded items are more expensive, because that is counter intuitive, and that it is because they do not conflict with other brands.

Evolution is fine, and almost entirely card-based so I'm not sure what you're talking about on that end. Plays quick, multiple strategic options although if you want to be carnivorous you really have to work for it.

True, but could be a good opener while you set up the game prior to teaching the rules.

This afternoon I have found myself deeply yearning for a copy of Lorenzo Il Magnifico. I guess it hasn't gotten US distribution yet, so I was looking at importing an Italian copy because I'm stupid. Then I read that CMON is releasing that and Council Of Four in late spring/early summer, so that's awesome. Definitely am going to be picking those up.

Game afternoon turned into A Feast For Odin. A ton of stuff to do in that game, but after the lecture to learn how everything goes it's pretty straightforward overall. Got third out of four, probably could have tired for second if I'd made a better play on the final turn.

Got to play Magic (buddy is very into it, and I can play and enjoy as long as I'm not making the decks), Orcs Must Die: The Order, Sushi Go Party, and Formula D tonight. We lost OMD, I came in third (I think) in Sushi Go Party - I really like that there are enough cards to make the game however I want, and won Formula D.

And then I picked up the new version of Citadels because my wife really likes that one and we didn't own it yet. All in all, a very good game night at my FLGS. :)

First two games of Pandemic legacy were a major hit. Pretty certain everyone is fully invested.

    January/February spoilers
I blew it on the first game. I neglected to fully read the first STOP card and we never introduced the COdA virus rule. We ended up winning January by curing all 4 viruses, so the impact was actually minimal. But I was still pretty choked about messing up. Those sort of rules screw ups on my part leave me thinking what if and I tend to put an asterisk on those games in my mind; sort of a shame to do it with a legacy game. We ended up just adding the COdA stickers to the disease that was giving us the most trouble and moved on to February.

I'm thankful we had this error on the first game; I'll be especially careful going forward and make sure to read the STOP cards thoroughly.

My character the generalist took a scar in January but aside from that everything went pretty smooth. February was rough however. We dropped the generalist and brought in the quarantine specialist who now has a co-worker relationship with the scientist. The co-worker ability is pretty powerful, however it didn't end up being a deciding factor since we lost pretty badly in February. We now have three cities at stage 2 of panic and at least 2 more at level 1. Two of the stage 2 cities are adjacent in south america and the other is in Europe. The second half of February will be interesting.

I can't wait to get everyone together again to pick up where we left off.

We played April in Pandemic Legacy last night.
Somehow, our initial infection included zero red cities (our COdA) and mostly blue and yellow. We started in Baghdad, and I started with 2 black cards, and there were 2 other black cards in other hands as well,so I played the scientist and cured black on my first turn. (each of our diseases had a level 1 positive mutation from previous games)

We managed to avoid any outbreaks, and did a pretty good job managing yellow, which was the most common disease in April. We cured yellow shortly after black, and were able to eradicate black entirely.

We didn't draw a red disease until the third epidemic when we pulled Hong Kong off the bottom. I probably should have known better, but I wasn't expecting the Faded to show up! I was legit surprised and thinking that it's really cool, and the figures are a good touch.

After we pulled that Hong Kong card, we were rushing to get 5 blue cards in the hands of our medic for the final cure, however we knew that Hong Kong was at high risk for an outbreak. I had to book it to Hong Kong and spent my last action to quarantine it, but it meant that I was going to take a scar. It paid off though because I pulled Hong Kong at the end of my turn, and the quarantine saved it from out-breaking.

We got the 5 blues to our medical after that, and we were able to eradicate blue on his next turn.

One thing we forgot to do that we discovered doing end game upgrades is give a relationship to newly created characters. We fixed that, so now our Operations Specialists is family members with our Medic.

I don't understand people who try to sell their used games for like $4 less than a new copy. Do people actually buy this stuff at these prices? Why even bother trying to sell games if you're not pricing then to actually sell?

Yeah, it's pretty fantastic. I'm devastated that they didn't do any expansions for it, but, hey, the campaign gets you a good 8-10 hours of gameplay. I really hope FFG adapts the mechanics to another IP.

There were 2 new character decks released, a Witch Hunter and a Troll Slayer. They retailed for $5, but were one of the first casualties of the GW/FFG split and go for $40+ second hand now.

I can report that the first game of Ladies & Gentlemen was a smash hit! Everyone loved it, and we were at 8p. Teaching went well despite my never having played it. Definitely want to play it again.

Wife and I played Pandemic Legacy this morning, second go at January:
Arguably, we couldn't do worse than our first game. We left the board with two cities at level 2 and more at level one. We ended the first game due to maxing out the Outbreak level. This game though we were Zen Masters. No outbreaks, eradicated red and blue. We welcomed the Daisy Pox (red) and Smeasles (blue) to the game. Got lucky in drawing 4 starting red cards between us, so with my wife as Researcher she gave me hers to make 4. I cured it and moved in to eradicate as the Medic. We got lucky thereafter to come up with several red infections that didn't do anything. That bought us time to eradicate blue (using the no station required upgrade) in short order and then slam dunked the yellow cure in a few more turns. We now have the January bonus, a starting station in the yellow area (as well as one in Baghdad) and blue disease has the first and second positive mutation.

It was a good day. Now, on the February.

We played the tutorial and it seems great. Really looking forward to getting deeper in. Any thoughts on 2p? Can't decide if going with the heroes activate twice thing is better, or playing 2 heroes each.

Also it Looks like there's a pretty good amount of fan expansions if nothing else.

Anyone here played Tiny Epic Kingdoms?

    If so, help me out.

One of the actions you can do is to move a meeple from one terrain card to another.

I assume, though this isn't stated anywhere*, that you move it to a card played by another player, and not pull a new terrain card from the deck. Right?

    * Unless I missed it.

Correct. There is no mention of ever adding more than the starting number of territory cards anywhere in the rules.

We have had better success with 1 hero per player rather than multiple; I feel the 2nd activation makes it easier to set up synergistic moves. I think it would also depend on what characters you're playing though.

    Pandemic Legacy, February:
Well, February was a bit harsher than January was. While we lucked again in to a red cure on turn 1, we couldn't eradicate it for a few turns. Singles kept popping up on the other side of Asia to thwart our attempts. Meanwhile, my wife who had switched characters to the new Quarantine Specialist, Astrid, worked hard at locking down central black cities. This paid dividends later when those infection cards came up. We suffered three outbreaks this game due to a drought of yellow cards combined with both of us being too far away to stop the chain. We now officially have one city at level 3. Thankfully, no scars were had.

We made use of the new relationship stickers. Now we can share cards with one of us not having to be in the city. That was a major boon this game. Until we both forgot that we couldn't cure black, so there was a water couple of rounds shuffling those cards around. I'll bet we could have used that time to prevent the outbreaks. Gah!

Now, on to March. We chose the upgrade for the Medic (Johnny Danger, that's me!) to be able to treat neighboring cities and we gave red the first positive mutation. Having a funding level of 2 is going to suuuuck.

Cluck cluck, gibber gibber, my old man's a mushroom, etc.

My entirely anecdotal, not at all scientific read (of having played 4 and 3 player, and read about 2 player) is that it gets slightly harder with less players such that the increased health doesn't quite compensate. Mostly because you have less "engagement space" to deal with enemies.

I've never liked the idea of playing multiple heroes in games with light RPG elements, but whatever works for you! It certainly seems best balanced for four distinct heroes, but I'd be curious to hear how you manage with one hero each.
