Currently ready to tear my hair out trying to decide between hyper-converged or a traditional servers+switches+SAN to replace my current vsphere cluster. This is not a problem big businesses have I would assume. You'd have specialized storage guys who wouldn't have to learn a million things once every 3 years to replace this stuff.
Dell servers + Nimble SAN, or Nutanix via Dell? Either way I'm finally switching to 10gb/e.

Before we can answer we need to know how you stand on IPv4 vs IPv6.

APC, why do the battery backup ports on your UPS's only work if the battery works, but the surge protection ports work regardless of that fact?
How about some other notification (like a beep) that the battery went tits-up and not "hey assbag, we're just gonna turn everything off despite there being power available from the wall"?

We're a Nimble shop.
They are expensive but amazing. The performance is fantastic, they are rock-solid, their support is stellar, and they and so easy to manage.
If you can afford them, I'd say they're a good choice for a company without a dedicated storage engineer because they are so easy to work with.
Literally my only complaint is that they're stupid expensive, even compared to other SANs.
every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.
Starting the "switch to Ubiquiti networking equipment" movement.
Had a PoE switch have a fan die and told my boss we're gonna replace it with a UBNT model.
Plus, I get to go to some UBNT switching and routing class, because why the fuck not? It's only an hour away, so the drive isn't bad for a 3 day class and I get some free swag to screw around with.
It worries me slightly, however, that I got a confirmation email about the class and in it was
Make sure you bring your own extension cord and power strip.
I can do whatever I want to do if it's under 500 kylobhituhs

Times change I guess. I got a Nimble about 2 years ago and it was dirt cheap at the time. It is really great though. The business will outgrow it in four months though. We've outgrown the network stack(s) and the esxi hosts will fall short in about 2 months. UPS is past due, KVM is ancient, racks are a dumb relic from a past age when we were small. So I get to rethink the whole thing! Oh hell I wonder if I'll have to replace my firewall stack if I add that new 1/1Gbps circuit.

I don't have any experience with the things you mentioned, but we do have a standard Servers/Switches/SAN implementation with all Dell hardware. We have four Dell servers, two Dell switches (stacked and redundant), and two Dell EqualLogic SAN boxes in SyncRep mode. We keep each item for 6 years (we started with 2 servers/1 SAN for the first two years), and rotate/upgrade half of it every three years. Currently, that's all 1Gb, but we've got the equipment in a box to move at least the storage connections to 10Gb, because one of our old EQLs is a hybrid array and the one I just bought is also a hybrid. Really looking forward to the next month or so when I can focus on that refresh project.
Anyway, if you have a Dell Premier account, that stuff isn't as expensive as you might think. I'm pretty happy with the EQL boxes, and their support (if you pay for it) is excellent. They worked with me practically all weekend once recovering from a boneheaded mistake of misunderstanding how the RAID was set up on one EQL as it relates to hard drive failures. And honestly, while they want to force you to have them help install/integrate the EQL, there really isn't a whole lot to it. I've done the last couple EQL installs myself.

Wrong word. I meant diagraphs: GR (graphics as in GUI and GIF), ST (standard as in ANSI), FR (frequently, as in FAQ).
BTW I didn't know that the word "dipthong" only applied to vowels until today. I learned something! http://www.cdl.org/articles/the-difference-between-dipthongs-and-digraphs/

Yeah I was going for a Wilford Brimley approach there.
Yes. The beeps for a UPS and a smoke detector are backwards.
How about constant beeps for something that could potentially save my life?
