How Do You Feel About Beat Poetry? [ FX's Legion]

Ok, how do you feel about FX's new television series Legion?

Legion is the story of David Haller, a curious man in a curious psychiatric ward with curious friends. We are told, as is he, that he has schizophrenia. But there might be more to it than that. After a startling encounter with another patient we, and David, start to have our doubts. And not just the little nagging doubts, like did I leave the light on? Doubts about that result in the decimation of the core truths of your existence. And maybe everyone else's existence. What follows is a man unsure of himself dealing with might be a secret war boiling in the corner of your eye. Is this onslaught real or is it just him developing a messiah complex?

Screen-Shot-2017-02-09-at-9.49.28-AM-730x410.png

It's an X-Man show.

It's the new hit show from Fargo's Noah Hawley. It stars The Guest's Dan Stevens.

Keep your spoilers marked to their respective episodes please!

Is this open spoilers or not open spoilers?

EDIT: By which I mean, are we spoiling episode 1 or are we spoiling everything up to a certain episode?

The latest episode probably had one of my favorite sequences in television in some damn time.

    Episode 7
The silent film action sequence was just utterly perfect. Like how they managed to maneuver that without feeling gimmicky was a awe inspiring.

Like any kind of battle on an astral plane, or psychic battle type situation will have to contend with this. It felt unnerving in all of the best ways.

Seriously. He acts so hard with his face, it's amazing. Super expressive.

Also, I didn't even realize it was the guy from The Guest! That's cool, he's very good. Even better than I realized, apparently.

    I'm guessing that
Xavier didn't give up David to protect him from the Shadow King since he had already defeated the Shadow King. I think Xavier gave David up to protect him from his other enemies, like the many anti-mutant extremist groups, Mr. Sinister, the Hellfire Club, Cassandra Nova, maybe even Apocalypse or Selene.

Also, I think David broke his own mind when he destroyed Clockwork in the astral plane. We do see him go through his own memories to get to the Clockwork illusion so that reality is linked to his own mind. It would be poetic for David to destroy the mad house and let the crazies out.

Another couple favorite scenes from the most recent episode...

Paraphrased because I can't remember them exactly

When he is in the coffin with his own mind

    "I'm your rational Mind"

    ..."And you're British?"

As well as during the classroom scene

"Is that your attempt at a English accent?"

What makes it all the funnier is that he is actually English! I didn't realize this until I looked up the actor.

I think that it worked because it was short and fast. It didn't overstay and it wasn't dragged out, and it was interspersed. I thought it was a great way to represent the psychic dulling of senses (and her killing the Eye like that was awesomely messed up!) but it was used sparingly and that was key.

    Latest episode
The best thing about this was that when American David did the British accent it was a Patrick Stewart impression

The Eye's two deaths were utterly shocking. Great horror stuff there.

But yeah, it was also from a metatextual way a great way to show a psychic battle. They are literally using the medium as a weapon. Which was brilliant on just a textual level, but that they actually made it work and super thrilling in execution is the cherry on top. I'd be hard pressed to come up with some better examples to be honest.

Yeah if you think of it as Lenny creates an asylum as an astral projection to trap them in so she can take control, the terrifying asylum is her influence over the mindscape, a vivid, full colour nightmare of deranged lunatics dragging at their heels.

Oliver's glasses replace that with a silent black and white movie, changing their perception of the mindscape through his re-genre-ing of it. And that Oliver is a trendy sort of art house dude means he creates a trendy sort of art house impression of things.

And it's great that the show does that without spelling it all out. It assumes you are paying attention. Which is a nice touch, really.

Makes me want to play some Mage...

I am so, so happy the Interrogator is back

after episode 1 I was disappointed that they'd killed him off since I thought he was fantastically intimidating in an understated sort of way

    and now he's back!

You know I rewatched the latest episode tonight
    Man

The editing quality in that whole scene where they are flashing from the room to the asylum to David to the telekinetic waking up in another mindscape to the room to the asylum etc etc etc is incredible. Like, it flows together so well, builds and builds to the crescendo of the whole episode and is so exciting to watch! Really great work there, they pulled together so many things going on at once, made them really clear, and kept the ongoing feel that this was all happening simultaneously with apparently effortless ease.

    Great work

I was not expecting the guy from Gentleman Broncos to show up on this show.

He's apparently only able to play one very specific type of character, but he's pretty good at that, it seems.

I've never heard of him before or seen anything else he's been in. The retro era and wardrobe were very similar on top of the character/actor.

So I was watching last week's episode when my girlfriend was over, she had never watched any of it, and we got to The Scene with Aubrey Plaza and she just slowly looked over and asked "....so how many episodes of this do I need to watch to catch up?"
