Wikipedia is good for looking backstories on superheroes and such.
For matters of more factual importance, it's still a pretty good starting point. The entries will generally have a good summary of what you want to know, and then you can use other resources to cofirm and get more details.
Wikipedia is also immensely useful for winning arguments provided you can edit the page without the person you're arguing with knowing, and show it to them before it's fixed.
